@Marshhen actually gay men understand women a lot more then you give them credit for; they have that more pronounced feminine side which enables them to understand women a whole lot more, and also straight women confide in them more then they do straight men because there isn't the possibility of attraction within that relationship.

What I think is absolutely amazing about this show is how drastic these characters are from the people who really play them. They're all a bunch of lovely people, for the most part, who're brilliant writers. What persistently inspired writing! Saunders (Edina) and Lumley (Patsy) were both fantastic, throughout. Sawalha (Saffy) was an unmatched (not to mention beautiful, in her own right) straight man; indeed, one cannot imagine this programme without her. Unbelievably talented. Whitfield (Gran) is whimsical and wonderful, and Horrocks (Bubble, my favourite) adds her brilliantly surreal touch of comedic genius. One of the finest television comedy series of all time. Always, always enjoyable.
