Saw this film, years ago, as I was a big 'Police' fan back then. The original part of 'Martin' [the character that Sting plays in the film} was due to be played by David Bowie. But Bowie was unavailable for the part back then. The producer then turned to Sting to play the lead, and what an inspired selection that was.

Oh that's interesting, thanks. I gave "Broken Music" a quick read, but missed that part. I didn't think he spoke very much about Frances, for obvious reasons.

OT: he was also unclear about why his first girlfriend died so young. He sort of implied (or maybe I misunderstood) that she killed herself, possibly over him leaving her.

ok...sting played a conman/devil no one knows. he cons his way into the house of an older couple with a older girl "21"ISH who is traumatized by something ...but she is a vegetable of sorts. and stings passion grows for her...then he rapes her.....then we find out a dark seceret......the movie is called BRIMSTONE AND TREACLE. seems out-dated now, but still good. A movie with a story NOT ACTION!!

This is a stunning version of the song. I saw Brimstone & Treacle years ago when it first came out in the pictures. They makers where originally going to use David Bowie as the lead part, but something happened, whether he turned them down or something I don't know. So, their next choice was inspired...they went for Sting, who was a huge star back then, not so much now. But, back then, he was massive. His acting in this film is beyond belief, creepy, and brilliant. and this song...the best.
