If we take a situation like a barfight. If no one is armed, the result is more likely to be that someone gets hurt but suvives. Put guns in to the mix and we might end up with death insted.
Also some criminals do crimes with guns becuse (as you say) thay are easy to use and the victem can´t put up a defense aginst a gun.
If a criminal were forced to use his hands insted, he might think twise becuse he dosent know if his victim can fight back.
