  • I love Patty Griffin, and there is a reason so many artists cover her songs. She has a spirituality that glows

  • perfection.

  • Christ-o-mighty....her voice. I saw her in Richmond at an outdoor concert and a double rainbow came out and stayed for 30 minutes while she played. Utter perfection.

  • if people are comparing kelly and patty, they're doing it in ignorance. they're two totally different styles of music doing their own thing but both very talented and creative in their own right. When kelly performs this song, she makes sure people know about patty. she doesn't take any credit for this song, nore does she sing it full. She totally name drops for patty's sake. I don't see that as her trying to be better than patty, I see that as advertising. lol

  • Patty is a peace of heaven on earth guys....this song is wonderful

  • WOW!!

  • goosebumps.....gives me goosebumps...lovely

  • She is awesome....

  • Very beautiful indeed. Thanks for sharing.

  • I cried!

  • No woman singing today can touch her!

  • Of course it's beautiful. It's Patty Griffin! Your assignment is to go out and buy Patty's cds. Start with "Living With Ghosts". After you've begun to absorb that one into your soul, then buy "Flaming Red". Keep on going. You won't regret it.

    She is the best.

  • loved hearing Crystal perform her song last night on American Idol... but so wish she was more recognized...

  • I have the album that this is from. I thought did Kelly did a great job with Patty's song.

  • amazing

  • this song changed me, got through to me at exactly the right moment

  • Why is she so under-rated?

If current artists like Kelly Clarkson understand how brilliant she is why doesn't anyone else?

For me, she is in the Dylan class of songwriters.

  • the others sing it like they borrowed it patty sings it like she owns it (and i no she wrote it) they all do good covers but for me patty owns it.

  • i just love this woman's spirit...whenever I watch this...and I've watched it a few times just in the last few days I imagine meeting her on the bus or at the mall...you would never imagine such depth and power could emit from her. She's amazing...AMAZING

  • I love Patty's version of this song, especially because of that final verse which is so great. Kelly does an incredible job too, a really emotionally charged version.

  • patty wrote this song

  • @emetophobia777 ...I know that.

  • to the person she is and her personality and flavor...and comes out of all she's been through in life and all the hard work and heartache- she has put into it.

  • someone smack that cackling hen at 3:22.

  • This is our ballad in show choir. Couldn't have picked a better song.

  • excuse me, solomon burke owns this song

  • ALL of these versions are great.

  • Excuse me, if you know Solomon Burke's version, Patty sings on that CD (Nashville) too. Not to mentioned Patty wrote the song. Get some facts straight.

  • yeah Patty actually "owns" it in legal terms because she is the author of both words and melody. she'll continue to "own" it until years after she is dead (what is the copyright thing with music...a hundred years after the author dies?-thought I heard that somewhere)..she sings it better than anyone too, but I am sure others can come close...patty is not the kind of person to lay claim to things such as this...I have heard her say in another youtube vid actually that she writes the songs and...

  • they seem kinda like hers, like her own little children..and then at some point she records them and kinda lets them go and they are not really hers anymore, but belong to all of us. Most likely she is also one of those kinds of people who believes that God (or the universe, what have you-don't know her beliefs in that arena) kinda works "through" her. She's been blessed with a great gift, not only incredible vocal cords, but a very special songwriting capability and talent..and it is unique

  • He sang the fuck out of it but wrong. Patty G. does. She wrote it.

  • @SkeeterNYC

I don't know that "wrong" is the way I would put it. I think she nailed it, for her. I also think KC should get a ton of credit, because of all the vapid pop stars and wannabees, she came closer to tapping the amazing depth of this song than any of her contemporaries would have. Props.

  • All one can say is WOW..... now that is from the heart of a true songwriter, and so far your performance (especially the one I saw last night w/ Owens/Kristopherson blew me away. 10+

  • It's like when jimi hendrix took all along the watchtower from dylan and put his stamp on it...and dylan praised him for it

as im sure patty would praise kelly

  • Both Patty n Kelly r awesome and have a great sound that they rock

  • She just nails it. Patty Griffin is beyond comparison.

  • i love this song and patty griffin .

i did let him fly & hope to upload this rendition soon!

check them out & give me feedback!

  • i understand what you're saying and all; clarkson did an amazing cover of this song. but whose lyrics and music is she using?? this is a phenomenal song and its ridiculous to say that clarkson is beyond griffin's league. insulting actually.

  • You need to check yourself. Patty is an amazing song writer AND singer. I love kelly just as much, but she will never be the song writer that patty is!!!!

  • I really love this song - especially this arrangement - just her with an acoustic guitar and Doug Lancio with minimal accompaniment on the electric guitar - gives me the chills! I love Lancio (and Patty too, of course!)

  • There is no need to compare Kelly Clarkson and Patty Griffien. Kelly picked this sensational song of Patty's to sing at an important event out of admiration and respect. Kelly happens to have a good voice which enables her to popularize this great composition of Patty's.

  • Kelly will also tell you that she thinks that Patty sings this way better than her. she told everyone that at the concert i went to. i think that's why i love her so much. she is so modest and respectful to other artists

  • Indeed.

After Kelly became Kelly Clarkson, she still went to Patty Griffin's concert and sang along to every song, like one of ordinary girls in the audience.

  • How many people have covered Patty's songs? She interviewed that she didn't almost record the MLK song after Solomon Burke did a "heartbreaking version" of it, because "THAT'S how you do that song." It's homage, people. Humility and mutual respect. Whether they compare to Patty is different than how much they honor her by singing her songs. She probably feels similarly when she sings other people's songs.

  • A true artist ...this song & the way she sings it gives me goosebumps. Simply amazing ...her voice & the lyrics, love it!!! Thanks for posting this ...smiles.

  • i think since i have seen kelly / reba sing it so much... i think i perfer there version but the origional is great to!

  • Amazing song ... along with songs like "ANGEL" Sarah and "Amazing Grace"

  • no, it's about martin luther king jr

  • But isn't she referring to god, when she says, because 'YOU' asked me to, and when she says, I know 'You' love me so at the end of the lyrics? or is she referring to MLK?

  • she is referring to MLK as the "you" when she sings "but then i go on again because you asked me to." this is in reference to a part of his speech where he says, "We are going on. We need all of you...either we go up together or we go down together." so it may be christian by virtue of being inspired by MLK who referenced jesus in his speech. but i don't believe the song is directly about god. she said is somewhere but i'm sorry i can't find the article.

  • i understand now, Thanks for the kind explaination :)

  • I love both versions of the song. They're artists in their own right.

  • I have to say, I believe this song written and sung by Patty Griffin should be made a classic in Gospel Music! It's that incredible a song! The super strong lyrics, melody, chorus, and passion filled singing..should truly be considered for much more. Just picture a rich, full, passion filled resonant african american voice singing this song in a thick mezzo soprano. It would blow my mind, and quench the longing in my soul!

  • My......Could Patty be more flawless.

  • this is so beautiful. i like it more with the piano and strings though.

  • Patty is an AMAZING singer/songwriter, and other artists show their appreciation for her art by covering her songs. Her words touch your soul, her voice is divine. She deserves so much more attention. (check out my Patty playlist!)

  • After hearing Kelly Clarksons beautiful cover of this amazing song...I was hesitant to watch this..but I'm glad I did. It shows how many facets one song can have. I loved this performance just as much...!!!!

  • same here! kc does an amazing job on it..pattys original is good too!~

  • incredible! Patty Griffin is an artist who deserves far more recognition than she receives.. IMO Kelly Clarkson choosing to perform her songs introduces this fantastic artist to people who might otherwise never know her. Kelly pours her heart and soul into those performances too and while Patty clearly owns these songs Kelly certainly does them justice. People dissing Kelly are clearly operating under an agenda which does not belong in this forum.

  • Exactly. I didn't know of this artist until kelly Clarkson performed it. =)

  • yep same here!~

  • Couldn't agree more. Not to mention, Kelly has expressed openly how much she loves Patty Griffin's artistry.

  • shannon, as one of patty griffin's biggest fans, i couldn't agree more. i simply see it as kelly spreading the patty love. :)

  • @shannonk68 yes she showed maturity in her selection. BUT kelly and Beck were too self indulgent with this song which was meant to be sung with grace and humility not as a power ballad with guitar riffs overshadowing the sweet vocals!!!!!

  • check out the version by Solomon Burke with Patty backing. The second Patty chimes in there is no mistaking it is her. Incredible verson of the song.

  • I can't find that version... is it on Youtube?

  • No, it is on his CD "Nashville"

  • Patty Griffin needs to keep singing forever - she has the most beautiful voice. This song is perfect lyrically. Come sing to us in Houston Patty!

  • A song hasn't touched my heart like this one in a while.

  • I am absolutley awe struck! Simply beautiful and sung from her soul.....first I've heard of her but I am stuck like glue now!

  • not sure why you got so many thumbs down bro but I would agree. And that is not as a dis on Kelly at all.

  • actually it's entirely a dis on kelly. patty griffin is my favorite singer in the world and even i can see that. what's so wrong in a pop artist looking up to a singer/songwriter?

  • WTF are you talking about? My comment was in replies to Jeffjohn's comment. Nothing was discussed about looking up to another artist... He was stating that Kelly and patty are in different leagues...and I agreed. Quote below.

"She is a true artist, plain and simple. She writes and performs better than most could ever dream of aspiring to. No offense, but Kelly Clarkson is not even in the same league as this woman..."

  • I think she does hope to be....

  • Lighten up Francis. Nobody is dissing on kelly so quit your crying.

  • this song makes me wanna cry. shes amazing. *rushes off to buy all her albums*

  • lovely song,so sweet

  • She is great with this song. Kelly clarkson done this song to and love that version too. Love them both either or is great!

  • @wetsitfamily I love that you can love both versions! its seems like no one else can enjoy and respect both versions! I think its awesome Kelly loves Patty and wanted to cover this song! I think this has been Kellys most respected and most popular cover! It was so amazing! I got the opportunity to see her perform it live twice, and she sang it for the last time here in Utah and I got the privilege of watching it! Ive seen Patty perform it live to and cried the whole time!

  • @liljackslade I totally agree they r totally different but yet both still r so great and emotional to listen to for me!...I think they are both amazing..never saw them in concert but would love to someday!...I live in a very small town and nothing and noone ever comes here lol ..

  • I heard this song for the first time on an episode of Greys Anatomy, and i have to say that i love it. The words are just powerful and she has such an amazing and soulful voice. Just incredible.

  • Patty Griffin writes such great material. Other than Emmy and Linda most people who cover her are awful and do lame versions of her songs. Patty's the shit!

  • I think there have been, fortunate for us, quite a number of good covers of Patty's songs. I hope they all keep it up!

  • That's Soul.

  • This song both moves me to tears and makes me want to sing along!!!

  • She rightfully won her awards.

  • awesome... what a voice... what a song! thanks z lot for sharing!

  • Patty is breathtaking! What a great song.
