Christ-o-mighty....her voice. I saw her in Richmond at an outdoor concert and a double rainbow came out and stayed for 30 minutes while she played. Utter perfection.
if people are comparing kelly and patty, they're doing it in ignorance. they're two totally different styles of music doing their own thing but both very talented and creative in their own right. When kelly performs this song, she makes sure people know about patty. she doesn't take any credit for this song, nore does she sing it full. She totally name drops for patty's sake. I don't see that as her trying to be better than patty, I see that as advertising. lol
Of course it's beautiful. It's Patty Griffin! Your assignment is to go out and buy Patty's cds. Start with "Living With Ghosts". After you've begun to absorb that one into your soul, then buy "Flaming Red". Keep on going. You won't regret it.
i just love this woman's spirit...whenever I watch this...and I've watched it a few times just in the last few days I imagine meeting her on the bus or at the mall...you would never imagine such depth and power could emit from her. She's amazing...AMAZING
I love Patty's version of this song, especially because of that final verse which is so great. Kelly does an incredible job too, a really emotionally charged version.
to the person she is and her personality and flavor...and comes out of all she's been through in life and all the hard work and heartache- she has put into it.
Excuse me, if you know Solomon Burke's version, Patty sings on that CD (Nashville) too. Not to mentioned Patty wrote the song. Get some facts straight.
yeah Patty actually "owns" it in legal terms because she is the author of both words and melody. she'll continue to "own" it until years after she is dead (what is the copyright thing with music...a hundred years after the author dies?-thought I heard that somewhere)..she sings it better than anyone too, but I am sure others can come close...patty is not the kind of person to lay claim to things such as this...I have heard her say in another youtube vid actually that she writes the songs and...
they seem kinda like hers, like her own little children..and then at some point she records them and kinda lets them go and they are not really hers anymore, but belong to all of us. Most likely she is also one of those kinds of people who believes that God (or the universe, what have you-don't know her beliefs in that arena) kinda works "through" her. She's been blessed with a great gift, not only incredible vocal cords, but a very special songwriting capability and talent..and it is unique
I don't know that "wrong" is the way I would put it. I think she nailed it, for her. I also think KC should get a ton of credit, because of all the vapid pop stars and wannabees, she came closer to tapping the amazing depth of this song than any of her contemporaries would have. Props.
All one can say is WOW..... now that is from the heart of a true songwriter, and so far your performance (especially the one I saw last night w/ Owens/Kristopherson blew me away. 10+

kelly clarkson is beyond the league of patty griffin and there is proof she is. I dont hate patty because she made grea tsongs and her voice is nice. But kelly is beyond pattys league so no need to compar them because kelly is better.
i understand what you're saying and all; clarkson did an amazing cover of this song. but whose lyrics and music is she using?? this is a phenomenal song and its ridiculous to say that clarkson is beyond griffin's league. insulting actually.
You need to check yourself. Patty is an amazing song writer AND singer. I love kelly just as much, but she will never be the song writer that patty is!!!!
I really love this song - especially this arrangement - just her with an acoustic guitar and Doug Lancio with minimal accompaniment on the electric guitar - gives me the chills! I love Lancio (and Patty too, of course!)
There is no need to compare Kelly Clarkson and Patty Griffien. Kelly picked this sensational song of Patty's to sing at an important event out of admiration and respect. Kelly happens to have a good voice which enables her to popularize this great composition of Patty's.
Kelly will also tell you that she thinks that Patty sings this way better than her. she told everyone that at the concert i went to. i think that's why i love her so much. she is so modest and respectful to other artists
After Kelly became Kelly Clarkson, she still went to Patty Griffin's concert and sang along to every song, like one of ordinary girls in the audience.
How many people have covered Patty's songs? She interviewed that she didn't almost record the MLK song after Solomon Burke did a "heartbreaking version" of it, because "THAT'S how you do that song." It's homage, people. Humility and mutual respect. Whether they compare to Patty is different than how much they honor her by singing her songs. She probably feels similarly when she sings other people's songs.
A true artist ...this song & the way she sings it gives me goosebumps. Simply amazing ...her voice & the lyrics, love it!!! Thanks for posting this ...smiles.
But isn't she referring to god, when she says, because 'YOU' asked me to, and when she says, I know 'You' love me so at the end of the lyrics? or is she referring to MLK?
she is referring to MLK as the "you" when she sings "but then i go on again because you asked me to." this is in reference to a part of his speech where he says, "We are going on. We need all of you...either we go up together or we go down together." so it may be christian by virtue of being inspired by MLK who referenced jesus in his speech. but i don't believe the song is directly about god. she said is somewhere but i'm sorry i can't find the article.
I have to say, I believe this song written and sung by Patty Griffin should be made a classic in Gospel Music! It's that incredible a song! The super strong lyrics, melody, chorus, and passion filled singing..should truly be considered for much more. Just picture a rich, full, passion filled resonant african american voice singing this song in a thick mezzo soprano. It would blow my mind, and quench the longing in my soul!
Patty is an AMAZING singer/songwriter, and other artists show their appreciation for her art by covering her songs. Her words touch your soul, her voice is divine. She deserves so much more attention. (check out my Patty playlist!)
After hearing Kelly Clarksons beautiful cover of this amazing song...I was hesitant to watch this..but I'm glad I did. It shows how many facets one song can have. I loved this performance just as much...!!!!
incredible! Patty Griffin is an artist who deserves far more recognition than she receives.. IMO Kelly Clarkson choosing to perform her songs introduces this fantastic artist to people who might otherwise never know her. Kelly pours her heart and soul into those performances too and while Patty clearly owns these songs Kelly certainly does them justice. People dissing Kelly are clearly operating under an agenda which does not belong in this forum.
@shannonk68 yes she showed maturity in her selection. BUT kelly and Beck were too self indulgent with this song which was meant to be sung with grace and humility not as a power ballad with guitar riffs overshadowing the sweet vocals!!!!!

She is a true artist, plain and simple. She writes and performs better than most could ever dream of aspiring to. No offense, but Kelly Clarkson is not even in the same league as this woman and she could never hope to be. Tastes aside, that is the honest to God truth.
actually it's entirely a dis on kelly. patty griffin is my favorite singer in the world and even i can see that. what's so wrong in a pop artist looking up to a singer/songwriter?

Why is she so under-rated?
If current artists like Kelly Clarkson understand how brilliant she is why doesn't anyone else?
For me, she is in the Dylan class of songwriters.
