I read an article right before cars where made that there was a HUGE concern about animal waste harming the planet as there were too many animals and not enough people to clean up after them and there was a high rate of fatal accidents involving horses.

Several alarmists predicted downtown Manhatten would have manure up to 3rd story windows by 1930 if the problem wasn't taken care of until cars came out virtually eliminating manure.
