You want to know why we don't live in a utopia? Well ultimately because humans are a social animal who compete for resources with other social groups. This creates conflict and means some people end up winners and others end up losers.
One thing's for sure though - having those social groups organising under the banner of religion just gives people one more excuse to fight each other.
