KFC ran an ad in the US which people accused of being racist because it had a black man dancing while holding pieces of chicken. The ad also showed white people dancing while holding pieces of chicken but people seemed to ignore that fact.
Though it may not be racially motivated, the fact is that it CAN be misinterpreted is seemingly significant enough for the ad to be removed. The ambiguity is enough to cause controversy as evidenced hence it would probably have been a strategic decision for KFC as much as a politically correct choice.
I am going to assume that the racist cultures in once-colonized-by-Britain nations are not all that different. I understand that it may not be perceived as racist to give fried chicken to a bunch of black people in Australia, but that fact that this white man was able to pacify a boisterous, predominantly black crowd, with a relatively cheap "peace offering" is blatantly offensive. And no, I am not attacking Australians, but I'm not going to pretend that it is a racially blind country, either.
@xmandyu it wasn't a peace offering. Like old mate in the video said, its an awkward situation being surrounded by other fans with none of your own. When we all saw this ad in Australia, we saw them all as people, and we only had West Indies because we were playing them that summer, we could have had the english. If anything you are racist for pointing out these stereotypes. If America really thought they were equal amongst eachother they too would have only seen people in the the crowd,
@Vonenzo I appreciate your attempt to view all people as the same, regardless of race or skin color, but even w/o having been to Australia, I can tell you that it is not devoid of it's own racial stereotypes. And no, I am not racist for pointing out the stereotypes, I am aware of the unfair conditions in which people of color the world over have suffered under the colonizing hegemony which have persisted, unfalteringly, to today, which many people refuse to see.
@xmandyu Now say if KFC made an ad about Australia playing America in a sport along the same theme, If the americans were represented only by white people, americans would say its racist, if we mixed asians, blacks, whites and native indians into the american crowd, you americans would uproar that we gave black people fried chicken. You boast about your multiculturalism and equality, yet you point out old stereotypes...
@Vonenzo And on that note, American advertisements are completely racist too, only more subtly. Yeah, the country boasts about its multiculturalism but only so far as "the melting pot", that is, the ability for all those wonderful cultures (and I really do mean wonderful) to sink and disappear seamlessly into the "American" way of life. An imperialistic, unmoving hegemonic culture created, like I said previously, by European colonization. Check this ad out, I think this is a more equal way of
It's sad to see when certain gestures are misinterpreted. Differentiate what friendly gestures from what racial gesture is. A white Australian man could feel awkward in that situation or vice versa. It would be unnatural to hide his emotion. Blacks shouldn't expect special treatments from the Non-Blacks. They don't have to like you(blacks) solely because of your complexion. Not all of you are saints. Don't offend the Non-Blacks with your sensitivities. Thank you.
all you people are dumb. no one cares anymore and if it helps everyone hates everyone. or maybe i just hate everyone drop dead scumbags and let the world die. it would be nice to watch it burn. everyone sucks so shut the fuck up ..................
KFC shouldn't have cancelled the ad. Americans have no right to impose their misinterpretation which is based on their own stereotypes on Australian culture.
Their refusal to accept the ad isn't racist even after it has been explained to them is simply a disgraceful example of Americentrism: The ethnocentric and xenophobic practice of viewing the world from an explicitly American perspective, with an implied belief, either consciously or subconsciously, in the preeminence of American culture.
I know this is an old video but as an american I would like to put my word in... for as progressive as my country "thinks" it is, its really uptight and wants to try and please everyone, we all know that can't be done. I don't find anything racist about the commercial, and I do think it is "NONE" of the US's business what is aired on your TV.
KFC could have easily used another black guy wearing a different jersey instead of the white guy they used. This would've caused no controversy at all.
@SuperSaiyanWii Using a black guy to depict an Australian mightn't cut it. The same guy was in all the ads the use of a black guy who as a typical Aussie is unusual. That is, if he was black he might be an islander, or aboriginal - there aren't many African / Australians here, so that would affect the typical Aussie cricket fan stereotype they are working with.
IF he was an African / Australian the outrage would increase. It would give credit to the stupid American, racist stereotypes.
@Colenelnelson - awkward? he's referring to being in a group of the other teams supporters, they are West Indian, not African. It doesn't have anything to do with the fact they are black, just that he's in playing the West Indies and hes ended up in a large group of West Indian fans and because of that he feels awkward. If he was watching a game against the English, and was surrounded by British fans he'd feel the same way.
The perception of this ad (I guess) is based on culture. In America it definitely would be seen as racist. In fact, it was probably an American idea! change the commercial have several races from the supporting team around the man. It wont make it look like some innocent white man has been overtaken by some hungry cannabalistic Blacks. lol
@OnePotChefBlog Thank you for taking the take to explain your interpretation to the KFC (Australia) commercial. I am from the West Indies and I can say if I visited Australia and saw that ad, I would have interpreted as having racial undertones. What you explained and what I watched was not properly communicated, as none of the fans around him seemed to pay much attention until he presented a bucket of chicken. I do believe your country has a tourism aspect to it, how do they feel about it?
@irishgodfatherchris Thanks for the response. Today's world goes beyond the boarders of our own country, regardless of where or what it was intended for when things strike a note among people they share it with others. It had the potential to be a good ad, however it was not executed at its best.
@bowtomonkey I would have appreciated a much better reply, if you have nothing to contribute other than that, please do not comment. That was purely baseless.
@dalekurtmurray Dude you are making an irrelevant threat. What more do you expect? Do you really think this ad shows racism against Windies? I honestly don't want you to come here, if you do, because that alone suggests you are a bit fucked up. Me, I see a crowd of smiling faces, and and an ad that works, and you guessed it, I don't care about America's history, and predicaments. It's because I know that they are irrelevant to the Aus/Windies sporting relationship. Grow a set, dude ;-)
@bowtomonkey It is fascinating how you were able to conjure up a threat from my previous message. I'm from the West Indies and I'm educated enough to be culturally sensitive, the sport has nothing to do with what was communicated. If you find the time to understand Caribbean history you may understand. Australia has it's own history with the Aboriginal
@dalekurtmurray You threatened Australia's tourism, saying this ad will prevent people like you from coming to Australia, hence my reaction "so don't come". Don't belittle my intelligence, okay?
I see you are taking a racist slant pretending to know about aboriginals, being only sensitive when you perceive a benefit for you and completely insensitive to white people, or facts. Next you will pretend to care, even though I've never met a black who cares about aboriginals at all, and vice versa.
@bowtomonkey Belittling your intelligence has nothing to do with me, you have yourself to blame for that. Just read your next post.
In any case this discussion with you will reap no benefit to either of us. You obviously have another agenda. My final word, people are social beings and we need to sensitive about cultural other than our own.
It's important to keep things in context. Not all Americans are ignorant boobs. It just so happens that most of the ones that voice their thoughtless and unjustified opinions, happen to arouse contempt in the thinking man. Any dumbarse would know that stereotypes, generally, aren't global. We can't apply the "Sik kunt" stereotype to Americans, so we don't. We have our own racial prejudices as a country, don't try and stick us with yours.
I'm an Aussie and next time Australia plays the Windies, I'm going to take a big bucket of food, and sit amongst the opposition and offer food to all the people around and say "too easy", to quieten them down.
Americans will say, "you'll get mugged". Aussies will say, sure why not.
I don't think it will make them quiet, but they'll work at making me enjoy the game as much as they are, I think.
@AustralianAreRacists What a load of rubbish. I just visited your channel to see if you were for real. Your revolting, homophobic, garbage has no place on YouTube.
The add is racist. The offensive part wasn't the guy stating that he felt awkward. It was the fact that the crowd was "out of control" and he tamed them with chicken, and then said "too easy"
@Cornelius5463 okay first of all thats how fans of the West Indies behave at cricket matches and "too easy" is a common slang term in Australia normally used to replace words like "job well done" "thank you" etc.
@Cornelius5463 The crowd was out of control because they are West Indies fans, and you are hating on them because they are not behaving liked white people - point blank.
Ask them how they feel about being told, celebrating a game their own way isn't acceptable. Important West Indian people have already said the ad is just fine. Where do you get off telling them how to behave?
Australia happens to love the way they enjoy the game.
Just goes to show how a country that has overcome (or has barely ever had) racism issues gets drawn backwards and utterly misunderstood by the US, which are NOT the benchmark for absolutely everything in the world as we know it, as hard to grasp as that may be for some Americans.
@cihge Are you fucking kidding me? Australia is full of racism!! Do you know nothing about the treatment of the aboriginals? Or the fact that there was slavery in Queensland?
I've lived in both countries and tbh I've come across more racists in Australia than I do in California. The difference is Aussies are often oblivious to how racist they are!
@jointhefkndots uh huh and the fact that in your state white police officers can get away with belting a black man to within an inch of his life and be caught red-handed and get away with it and there was never slavery in Queensland everyone was paid albeit not a lot but they were paid (don't bring up the Kanaka's i'll just tear you down)
@irishgodfatherchris Unless you ever actually come to California and see what it's like here then you will never know what you're talking about. And before you try to turn that argument on me I might as well add that I lived in Australia for 5 years so I'm basing my comparisons off actual experiences in both locations.
@jointhefkndots i've lived here for 19 years I also live in one of the most socio-economically disadvantaged areas of the state i've seen discrimination, i've also seen people of different backgrounds (mainly Koori and Pacific Islander) do really well because they put the hard yards in i'm paid less than most of my co-workers and a lot of them are coloured and do I really care not really in the end we're all human whether you're black, white, brown, yellow or purple with big pink polka-dots.
I understand what you're saying about cultural differences and how it translates differently to us than to you, but what I'm not understanding is I guess the West Indies fans. You say it's not racist, but are all the West Indies fans black?
@OnePotChefBlog Not all the west indian fans in the ad are black, the fact that people are assuming it's about black people shows they're own racial prejudices
nice way of putting it. but you forgot one thing. why did they use blacks? because it wouldnt have worked with any other team. the intentions were there.
why couldnt they use a different race? because they couldnt put forth the stereotype!
the stereotype applies to blacks. does any other race play cricket? is so, why didnt they use another race? it was done deliberate. do you think this ad would have worked with another race of people?
@MrPhillyrick1 The ad was being played during the Australia vs West Indies cricket matches, that were being played in the West Indies. It seems quite logical that if they ad is set at the match, that the home crowd would be West Indians. It's not racist. I explained it in the video.
@MrPhillyrick1 Actually this could have worked for just about any other team in the cricket world. Would have been great to have an aussie in amongst the Balmy Army for example (that's a bunch of british fans by the way), and would have fit the context ment, perfectly. The Aussie v West Indies was just the match up at the time which is why they were in the ad. I'm sorry but you're imposing a stereotype on us that we just do not have here in Australia.
@b0m83d Lol, but in your firestorm, you hit some innocents with your words.
Actually if you intended that for all America, my guess is you hit more innocents than not. My understanding is that black or white, regardless, most of them actually laughed at this this ad and are disgusted with the response even though most of them didn't get the cultural context, that it's meaningless to Aussies, because in America the whole chicken = black stereotype is a joke and they like to to be funny.
Actually not all of us are dumb. However there is definitely a large degree of cultural ignorance on behalf of America that is quite embarrassing here. Even worse, it's sad that such an uproar was caused to remove it. This commercial was not played in America, so who gives a shit.

@b0m83d Wait, what? I think that's exactly what you just did. You generalized an entire population "Americans" (which, by the way, includes Canadians, Mexicans and South Americans) based on a single trait that you see as 'common'. That's stereotyping. Pretty much a textbook case of it.
Answer to one Q you asked in the vid: Yes, they did right to remove the ad. Not because it's racist at all, but because it gets people talking about KFC. Saying is, "There's no such thing as bad publicity."
Not all things about differences in races are bad. Stereotypes are a lot of fun! They don't necessarily "make fun." Stereotypes come about most often because there's truth to them. Stereotype shouldn't be a bad word. Enjoy life!
Final thought: Why isn't that idiot sitting with the Aus fans?
how is it racist? he made a noisy area calm down? its the people that think its racist because its black people a chicken? those are the racist people, everyone likes chicken!
KFC was sponsoring the cricket at the time and as we were playing against the West Indies you are naturally going to have black people in at least one ad, he's not trying to shut them up he's trying to break the ice
It was racist, and in an overt way at that. They could have shown people of various races with opposing team shirts or hats or something like that, but NO; they had to have nothing but blacks calming down from playing drums for some fried chicken. As far as them pulling the commercial I think it was a smart move. There are KFC's all over America, and it's hard to find a neighborhood where there is no KFC. They did not want a boycott over here in the U.S.
@Ms2MuchFun but it wasn't an American ad nor is KFC Australia an American company they employed an Australian ad company to advertise the companies interests (they were sponsoring the cricket series at the time) and it happened that at the time we were playing the West Indies (who are predominatley black) so you are going to naturally have their supporters featuring in at leat one of their ads. The point is is that its all about context and that was clearlyu lost when the US media found it.
I am aware that it was aired in Australia, and that the West Indies are predominantly black. However, as they have a very large market in the U.S. and since we have now been exposed to it thorough YT, they did well to pull it. They wouldn't have shown that here in the U.S. because they know the racial rammifications. The context IS racial to any thinking American, especially to African Americans. I'm not black, but I get it.
true but what happens to KFC America has no ramifications to KFC Australia, the same as say Holden (a GM company) stayed afloat even though GM USA went belly up
I see what you are getting at, but it WOULD have had ramifications since an Austrailian commercial would have started a boycott here in the U.S. Not only that, but this is how those stupid stereotypes spread. You guys don't need it.
@irishgodfatherchris KFC is an American company... they're WELL aware of that stereotype. If it wasn't racist, they wouldn't have tried to hide it from North America.
no its an American brand, and the ad was made by KFC Australia (a completely separate company) which employed an Australian ad company to make an ad that was designed and only going to be broadcast in the home demographic (Australia and possibly New Zealand)
i'll say it again KFC Australia is an Australian company who employ Australian ad companies to make ads for the Australian demographic, the world does not revolve around the US nor do they have to bow to their idiotic stereotypes
@diornotwar123 I'm sorry you must of missed the part of it being a CRICKET ad and must of forgot that is wasnt even a sport you knew about let alone understood or watched. What you think because an ad didn't air in the U.S that it is instantly being hidden from you? I think you need to get down off you high horse and realize is not your place in the world to tell us what is racist.
Export your coke export your Macdonalds and sure export your fried chicken we welcome it.
But keep your bullshit racial stero types to your fucking selves. I don't give a shit if your grey green pink brown or a white American your negative crap has no place here in Australia. We have our own bullshit to get over we don't need yours aswell.
The really upsetting thing to me is the backlash from the rest of the world - namely Australia & the West Indies - that now think all of us Americans are arrogant, ignorant, loud mouthed PC obsessed half wits because of the childish behavior of a few in attacking an ad they don't understand and was never meant for our culture in the first place.
I am ashamed and embarrassed and can only apologize, even if I was never involved. We are not all like that, I promise! :-)
I don't think it's ridiculous that they pulled the ad because they didn't want to make any waves. Once something has been shown to the mass public, if a negative view is taken by the majority of a powerful population, ad agencies will pull their product. KFC is obviously American as well as Australian and they don't want to damage their image. If this wasn't going to be considered a racist ad, their should have been more diversity among the crowd.
But surely black people have a right to support a black (in this case cricket) team? The idea of sport is you support your home team and people from the west indies are black...
More diversity among the crowd? So the crowd watching two teams play (Australia v West Indies) Should have British, New Zealand and Indian suporters in it just to increase the diversity? This many come as a shock to you but usually at a cricket match only the suporters of the two teams playing tend to show up... I know what a fucking revelation.
Yes sadly we do have racism here and it extends through all the races here so none a blameless.
However this whole situation eith the KFC is about a racial stero type that exists in teh USA. The whole black people chicken thing has NO meaning in this country so it means nothing to black or white people here. The issue here is that stupid fucking americans are to ignorant to see that things that affect them regularly don't have any basis in the rest of the world.
We have our own negative racial stereo types here (unfortunately) and guess what, you don't see hem being used in TV ad's.
See this is the problem most americans just don't fucking get. You place your bullshit judgements on peopel across the world based on your experiences from within your own country. Sadly when it comes to understanding cultures from around the world the USA is the single most ignorant country on earth. I hate to say it because my future wife is an american but ti's true
Wow, I see that some in the USA, how that would be the reaction, as they quickly forget the right of free speech. I so agree with you about taking PC too far and am glad to have heard your take on the story. Thanks for sharing!
Check my video response here. I forget to mention that the Yanks do not understand cricket or the British Commonwealth.
We do and so do the West Indies or Undies as they are known in NZ. Channel- squellock. Why not show the Rastaman showering the Aussies with Ganja? Peace and Love order me some KFC
The thing about this ad is that it's not about countries (or race), it's about cricket teams and the rivalry between them. IMO it would be racist NOT to make this ad just because the WI fans are black! I get really angry that they pulled the ad all because some people in a country on the other side of the world said it's racists because of THEIR perception of african americans and fried chicken. Which has absolutely NOTHING to do with us as aussies, or cricket!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i keep hearing about they dont know about steriotypes in australia, bullshit racism is everwhere, thats why they didnt want the commercial here in the u.s.whats next give the blacks kool aid to turn down the rap music?kiss my ass, they knew what they where doin."give them nigers some chicken they will stfu and watch the game!!"
Yes, because everyone in the world must think exactly like Americans. The stereotype does not exist here, and the ad was never designed for a foreign market. But please continue to twist the facts to fit your preconceptions.
i think everyones forgotten this ad was made for cricket in australia. aussies were versing the west indians at the time. the yanks completely overlooked this and said it was racist. they had no understanding as to what was going on. as an aussie, just keep the fuck out of it.
Isn't it a bit difficult to accuse an entire country of racism, when you yourself are using racial stereotypes (black people don't need sunscreen?)
People with darker skin have more melanin than those with lighter skin, but still have the same chances of developing skin cancer.
It's easy to take a few incidents out of context and claim an entire nation is racist. It's also easy for a sensationalist media to blow things out of proportion for the sake of selling a few newspapers.
yeah i agree its not racist from our perspective. that said, i believe it should be taken off since we should understand other cultures and respect that it may be seen as rascist from an american viewpoint.
its a good thing that we respect others cultures.
If anything similar to that add aired in the US it would have been heavily scrutinized and yes there I'd a stereotype that black people fancy fried chicken due to their roots in the south and the popularity of fried chicken coming from there
i guess im stupid, im just saying that the fried chicken stereotype comes from the south. And I would have to say that i do believe that most of the roots of african americans derive in the south(in the american perspective). My comment was about african americans in america sorry if you misunderstood
There are no African Americans in the ad so how is that in any way valid?
There are 1 billion people in the world with Dark brown coloured skin and they are not even all members of the same race. Only 30 million of them are American. That is why these kinds of generalisations are just fucking retarded.
I'm pretty sure that by pulling the add they're giving it a cult status that will attract a lot more people than it ever would have as a regular t.v add. All it does is get people watching and talking about KFC, which is pure genius from a marketing point of view. Especially as people like yourself have just posted a free KFC advert and I can honestly say that having just watched you talk about it, I now fancy going out and buying some... yum yum yum. Well done KFC add men...
You make a valid point, and this has happened, the ad has been taken off air. I just think that lazy americans who can't be bothered learniong about someone elses culture should , well learn about someone elses culture before making grand statements of "racism" from their high horse. Imagine if an Australian told america what theycan and can't put on TV, you'd get laughed at.
You are agreeing to racist double standards, which creates racism. It was right to defend this ad, as it shows people enjoying a game and sharing food, regardless of where they are from.
It is only racist if you use a negative racial stereotype - which racist.
Things are going backward, thanks to PC induced racism, from America.
By defending this ad we are defending the rights of actors of all cultures appearing in KFC tv ads. Thanks to America's ignorant loony left, KFC in Australia will think twice about hiring black people for their tv ads ever again. Now that is fucking racist.
its anoyin when ppl look for racism without understanding the full concept of the situation or what racism essentially is........i'm actually a little offended by ppls ignorance as an australian lol
Thanks for explaining the ad to us. It makes sense to me now. I was on the fence if the ad was racist, but now looking back at the video, it's so obvious the white guy was awkward because the other people were cheering on the other team. As an American that enjoys baseball and football, I can relate to the situation.
Take ur fuckking comment to some-one who cares my blood is boiling i wanna SPIT in his fuckking face thats my man and my black man he is reffering to the bastard
typical reaction of someone that cant use an argument for a debate, violence and insults.. is a shame USA cannot see the rest of the world is not supposed to know or view the world as they do, you know before this controversy i never know it was a stereotype that black people in the usa like watermellon AND chicken? the ad is not promoting an stereotype, the own USA is doing it by making a drama where there was nothing but an ad, good video and yeah dont let morons spit your video!
You hail from jamaica. Please tell me did you find the ad offensive? Also being of Indian descent you proably have it in for Aussies. With the media in India don't blame you. Australias getting to violent I agree, but as to this ad being racist I'm not so sure. Any positive feedback would be appreciated
The problem here is not racism but an ethnocentric panic about one group's perception of the stereotypical meaning of fried chicken. Although it seems to be white media 'personalities' making all the noise, African Americans do not feature in the add and neither is the context one that lends itself to the racist interpretation unless viewed by an individual who proscribes to an Afro-American world view and who looks for offence in anything and everything. Not 4 U, not ABOUT U - Get it?????????
AS a red head I'm deeply offended by the loony portrayal of Ronald McDonald! This racist profiling must stop! Also having scottish heritage The angry angus burger must be stiopped! I maybe angry but I don't always wear a kilt! This is obscenely degrading to scottish people.
And if an American Tourist asks me to do another Steve Irvin inpersonation then this is obscenely racist! Not everyone in Australia is steve Irvin, and we don't all hunt crocodiles! Kangeroos don't jump down the streets of our cities, this is obscenely racist and must stop!
The only decision now is whats for dinner. KFC, no racist, Mac donalds, anti red head no, Hungry jacks, no racist against scots, I know, I'll go to Taco Bills, oh no thats anti mexican with its big hat stereotype. Um, maybe I'll have to eat at home ...
what I hate about this is shows like a current affair and today tonight are willing to complain/ report about any one that claims racism but the minute there are some strong positive feed back that disputes racism , they completely ignor it like it doesn't exist. I wish they would start reporting what really happens not what they want to happen.
wow you did a great job of explaining this. me and my friend were debating the ad (we are both americans) and i said i dont think it was meant to be racist at all and what not but could see how it could be taken that way, but after watching this i completely agree with you. although i do think it was a smart move to pull the ad seeing as since it has gotten such a negative image it could hurt their sales, so a good move for the company, although i do agree that no one should have been offended
HAHAHA! KFC is SOOO racist! look up "KFC wingman commercial."

KFC could have easily used another black guy wearing a different jersey instead of the white guy they used. This would've caused no controversy at all.
SuperSaiyanWii 1 year ago
@SuperSaiyanWii but then it would not be an accurate depiction of an Australian fan. Also please remember KFC Australia is locally owned
irishgodfatherchris 1 year ago
@SuperSaiyanWii Using a black guy to depict an Australian mightn't cut it. The same guy was in all the ads the use of a black guy who as a typical Aussie is unusual. That is, if he was black he might be an islander, or aboriginal - there aren't many African / Australians here, so that would affect the typical Aussie cricket fan stereotype they are working with.
IF he was an African / Australian the outrage would increase. It would give credit to the stupid American, racist stereotypes.

@y9dnkbe because he said its an award sitation to be in a group of black people.
Colenelnelson 1 year ago

@dalekurtmurray Dude you are making an irrelevant threat. What more do you expect? Do you really think this ad shows racism against Windies? I honestly don't want you to come here, if you do, because that alone suggests you are a bit fucked up. Me, I see a crowd of smiling faces, and and an ad that works, and you guessed it, I don't care about America's history, and predicaments. It's because I know that they are irrelevant to the Aus/Windies sporting relationship. Grow a set, dude ;-)
bowtomonkey 1 year ago
@bowtomonkey It is fascinating how you were able to conjure up a threat from my previous message. I'm from the West Indies and I'm educated enough to be culturally sensitive, the sport has nothing to do with what was communicated. If you find the time to understand Caribbean history you may understand. Australia has it's own history with the Aboriginal
dalekurtmurray 1 year ago

HalfkastHybrid 1 year ago
I'm an Aussie and next time Australia plays the Windies, I'm going to take a big bucket of food, and sit amongst the opposition and offer food to all the people around and say "too easy", to quieten them down.
Americans will say, "you'll get mugged". Aussies will say, sure why not.
I don't think it will make them quiet, but they'll work at making me enjoy the game as much as they are, I think.

The add is racist. The offensive part wasn't the guy stating that he felt awkward. It was the fact that the crowd was "out of control" and he tamed them with chicken, and then said "too easy"
Cornelius5463 1 year ago
@Cornelius5463 okay first of all thats how fans of the West Indies behave at cricket matches and "too easy" is a common slang term in Australia normally used to replace words like "job well done" "thank you" etc.
irishgodfatherchris 1 year ago
@Cornelius5463 The crowd was out of control because they are West Indies fans, and you are hating on them because they are not behaving liked white people - point blank.
Ask them how they feel about being told, celebrating a game their own way isn't acceptable. Important West Indian people have already said the ad is just fine. Where do you get off telling them how to behave?
Australia happens to love the way they enjoy the game.

nice way of putting it. but you forgot one thing. why did they use blacks? because it wouldnt have worked with any other team. the intentions were there.
why couldnt they use a different race? because they couldnt put forth the stereotype!
the stereotype applies to blacks. does any other race play cricket? is so, why didnt they use another race? it was done deliberate. do you think this ad would have worked with another race of people?
they knew exactly what they was doing!
MrPhillyrick1 1 year ago
@MrPhillyrick1 they chose the West Indian supporters as KFC sponsors them and Australia and the West Indies were touring Australia at the time
irishgodfatherchris 1 year ago
@MrPhillyrick1 The ad was being played during the Australia vs West Indies cricket matches, that were being played in the West Indies. It seems quite logical that if they ad is set at the match, that the home crowd would be West Indians. It's not racist. I explained it in the video.
OnePotChefShow 1 year ago
@MrPhillyrick1 Actually this could have worked for just about any other team in the cricket world. Would have been great to have an aussie in amongst the Balmy Army for example (that's a bunch of british fans by the way), and would have fit the context ment, perfectly. The Aussie v West Indies was just the match up at the time which is why they were in the ad. I'm sorry but you're imposing a stereotype on us that we just do not have here in Australia.

@b0m83d Wait, what? I think that's exactly what you just did. You generalized an entire population "Americans" (which, by the way, includes Canadians, Mexicans and South Americans) based on a single trait that you see as 'common'. That's stereotyping. Pretty much a textbook case of it.
MechanicalCoupling 1 year ago

BlueMoonLightDreams 1 year ago
Answer to one Q you asked in the vid: Yes, they did right to remove the ad. Not because it's racist at all, but because it gets people talking about KFC. Saying is, "There's no such thing as bad publicity."
Not all things about differences in races are bad. Stereotypes are a lot of fun! They don't necessarily "make fun." Stereotypes come about most often because there's truth to them. Stereotype shouldn't be a bad word. Enjoy life!
Final thought: Why isn't that idiot sitting with the Aus fans?

MegaCutieGal258 1 year ago
how was it racist, it's the old fish out of water scenario played out a little different
irishgodfatherchris 1 year ago
It was racist, and in an overt way at that. They could have shown people of various races with opposing team shirts or hats or something like that, but NO; they had to have nothing but blacks calming down from playing drums for some fried chicken. As far as them pulling the commercial I think it was a smart move. There are KFC's all over America, and it's hard to find a neighborhood where there is no KFC. They did not want a boycott over here in the U.S.
Ms2MuchFun 1 year ago
@Ms2MuchFun but it wasn't an American ad nor is KFC Australia an American company they employed an Australian ad company to advertise the companies interests (they were sponsoring the cricket series at the time) and it happened that at the time we were playing the West Indies (who are predominatley black) so you are going to naturally have their supporters featuring in at leat one of their ads. The point is is that its all about context and that was clearlyu lost when the US media found it.
irishgodfatherchris 1 year ago
@irishgodfatherchris,
I am aware that it was aired in Australia, and that the West Indies are predominantly black.
Ms2MuchFun 1 year ago
true but what happens to KFC America has no ramifications to KFC Australia, the same as say Holden (a GM company) stayed afloat even though GM USA went belly up
irishgodfatherchris 1 year ago
I see what you are getting at, but it WOULD have had ramifications since an Austrailian commercial would have started a boycott here in the U.S. Not only that, but this is how those stupid stereotypes spread. You guys don't need it.

Edubya72 2 years ago
But surely black people have a right to support a black (in this case cricket) team? The idea of sport is you support your home team and people from the west indies are black...
thejoester5 2 years ago
More diversity among the crowd? So the crowd watching two teams play (Australia v West Indies) Should have British, New Zealand and Indian suporters in it just to increase the diversity? This many come as a shock to you but usually at a cricket match only the suporters of the two teams playing tend to show up... I know what a fucking revelation.
taipan185 2 years ago
Can you tell me how the indigenous people of Australia are treated? Doesn't racism exist their too?
Edubya72 2 years ago
Yes sadly we do have racism here and it extends through all the races here so none a blameless.
However this whole situation eith the KFC is about a racial stero type that exists in teh USA. The whole black people chicken thing has NO meaning in this country so it means nothing to black or white people here. The issue here is that stupid fucking americans are to ignorant to see that things that affect them regularly don't have any basis in the rest of the world.

The thing about this ad is that it's not about countries (or race), it's about cricket teams and the rivalry between them. IMO it would be racist NOT to make this ad just because the WI fans are black! Could it be that they have the highest skin cancer rates in the world and are jealous of those that dont need sunscreen because they have melanin?
kashambo1 2 years ago
Isn't it a bit difficult to accuse an entire country of racism, when you yourself are using racial stereotypes (black people don't need sunscreen?)
People with darker skin have more melanin than those with lighter skin, but still have the same chances of developing skin cancer.
It's easy to take a few incidents out of context and claim an entire nation is racist. It's also easy for a sensationalist media to blow things out of proportion for the sake of selling a few newspapers.
OnePotChefBlog 2 years ago
@kashambo1 wow india students killed, statisticly india has more murders per capita than australia.
the reasons indians are targeted

Thanks for explaining the ad to us. It makes sense to me now. I was on the fence if the ad was racist, but now looking back at the video, it's so obvious the white guy was awkward because the other people were cheering on the other team. As an American that enjoys baseball and football, I can relate to the situation.

typical reaction of someone that cant use an argument for a debate, violence and insults.. is a shame USA cannot see the rest of the world is not supposed to know or view the world as they do, you know before this controversy i never know it was a stereotype that black people in the usa like watermellon AND chicken? the ad is not promoting an stereotype, the own USA is doing it by making a drama where there was nothing but an ad, good video and yeah dont let morons spit your video!

Kangeroos don't jump down the streets of our cities, this is obscenely racist and must stop!

what I hate about this is shows like a current affair and today tonight are willing to complain/ report about any one that claims racism but the minute there are some strong positive feed back that disputes racism , they completely ignor it like it doesn't exist.
