This is the fault of whoever designed the safety gate:

The gate allowed the truck to drive right up to the track, and then closed on it.

The driver was just trying to get his truck out from under the gate, and into a safer position, but I guess he didn't realize how close the train was at the time.

If the gate was designed properly, and had good timing (IE, prevented vehicles from driving onto the tracks when a train was coming), then this would not have happened.

The barrier started coming down just as he entered the intersection, so he stopped and tried to back up, but the barrier had come down behind him so he was stuck. He probably panicked and didn't notice that the train was on the OTHER track and tried to get off the tracks as quickly as possible, not realizing he would have been fine where he was.

But the warning bell probably should have prevented this stupid mistake...

There's three ways this fails. One, trucker does not pay attention to the signals and the arms come down while he's crossong. Two, If the he had stayed where he was when he first backed up, he would have been fine. Three, he slowly moves forward. In the same situation, I'd be going full throttle and getting out of there as quickly as possible

If you looked closely he was reversing but the post prevented him to. I agree that he could have paid better attention of the incoming train on his left but he panicked since the wall on his right blind-sided him and it could also very well mean there was another train coming in that direction (which would have been fatal if he remained where he was). I believe most people here calling this guy a moron would have done the same thing.
