I wouldn't say that British humor was generally more sophisticated. Benny Hill wasn't terribly sophisticated. Spike, the Goons and the Pythons however is just amazing. There are also quite a few modern people I like, Paul Merton for instance.

i would have to argue that pythons and the goons were not particularly sophisticated either.  although the goons did somehow manage to get slapstick into audio. i would say comedic genius but none of those three were particularly witty of high brow. just hilariously low brow.
