@Fhenry Not sure. Usually solo artists are called so because they write their own music. Some solo artists, like KT Tunstall, will play all the instruments in concert (she recorded and replayed each overlapping melody using a button on the floor). Others, like owl City, use just electronic devices and can do it all themselves--same with Nine Inch nails. Most of them hire musicians to play the other instruments, but since they wrote the music, it's still a solo project.
