This is awesome stuff. Borg played some of his best tennis in 1981 prior to retiring, and in this match in 1982, after a year away from the tour, you can see how great he still was. Normally, for Mac to lose like this to him, Bjorn had to get John out of his normal rythym. But here, he was so sharp he just overpowered him. Great match from Bjorn and thanks for posting.
Mentally, he was burned out. Practiced 4-5 hours a day. Should have taken a break and practiced less. Retired too soon. Mac was hurt in early 82 and might have handled Lendl.
I wish Bjorn Borg wouldhave regrouped and continued on after this and not retired. Who knows how many more Grand Slams he could have won. He was Mentally through after 1981, but I think he could have found a second win and continued. I really wonder why he didn't continue? Maybe he just didn't get that second wind and didn't want to train and continue. It's frustrating, but it's his life and he did what he wanted.
Hi, if at all possible, would it be possible for you to put this video directly so I can see the real video instead of the tv taping? Only if you can or as long as it isn't much trouble for you.
Watching Mac now still brings back memories of him then. He still moves a lot like he did then, even though he's obviously not as good. But Bjorn is nowhere close - he had such great action on his groundies and could paint the corner every time. But all that just went. His style is also less baroque now, less twisty-swirly. I think playing with graphite has something to do with that maybe.
Two things: 1. Strange to see Borg serve and volley. 2. McEnroe had terrible ground strokes. At least in this match, just horrible....

It seems like Borg retired at the height of his powers. He is imperious here.

That's also Ivan Lendl in the back. Did Bjorn Borg play him in that tournament?
Thanks.
