awesome info - and laughs. I think i get it, so you are saying that when you went to the banana, that brilliant piece of cake was before the pineapple's brother flew chimney to bird, and g burns tide upon climb to pit. is that it? ... no seriously you are great! thanks for the well delivered and performed info.
Very nice! I was trying to imagine what types of "fills" you'd do with a guitar and I wasn't getting anywhere. The second I heard you do it everything made sense. Thank you and great lesson! I'm definitely subscribing!
"its a lame fill but it gives you the idea" lol, nice lesson... i think a good exercise is playing pentatonics and switching to modes for fills. Like a minor pent to dorian or sometihng like that then expanding that further and discover what plays well... just a thought
@rdicko86 That's also a good idea! Although it wouldn't really be playing out it still is a good way to get comfortable with how modes and pentatonic scales are linked. :-)
another easy thing to "fake" playing outside, is to imagine an A minor scale with 9 notes. Add the D sharp from A minor pentatonic, and add the A flat from the harmonic minor. Use those 2 notes as passing notes. At that point you can play 3 different scales and blend them together. Plus you can play the mode of whatever key of different chords on that lick. You can add bluesy sounds to natural and harmonic minors, use diminished, non diminshed, and chromatics due to this. Trial and error
a good thing to do when playing outside thats easy... is play something thats a lick within key, and then keep dropping it a half step down quickly until you get back to a key that makes musical sense. basically playing the entire lick, and then chromatically dropping it a half step down at a time a few times.
No offense, but you should take out all the jokes. They aren't funny and they just take away from the potential to learn. I couldn't get past the first minute.
@exbogus you could try using the altered scale of the scale you're in, i.e. if you're in C Dorian, as you are here, then you'd use C altered scale, because that includes all the "out" notes.
@matti2906 Yeah, try playing without a backing track. Just a metronome. As you play, use oly 16th notes and play out every other 4 notes. It will help you go out and back in...
Hey friend! I am one of those who learned hacking and have just a bit of theory knowledge. I usually play lead and have no problem coming up with phrasings and melodies off the cuff, however, it bothers me that I don't really understand what I am doing.
Can you please explain the logic of leading over chord changes?
@Wallimann thanks mate....can u teach us agian how to apply bebop scale because i see some vids thier are applying some bebop and diminished scle.....hope u can make a vids again thanks
I really like your explanation as it's so practical and gives you immediate start with actually doing it and familiarize with altered sound. At some point though it's worth looking at that subject from harmonic perspective and that in fact most of the time playing outside means outlining some virtual dominant chord and as such shouldn't be just 'random'. Once again - I'm not saying that you're wrong - it's just I think there is a deeper end to the subject that is worth mentioning.
This is what separates the good "instructors" from the bad: Taking a potentially complex idea (playing "outside") and making it easily digestable for all! I have found it confusing, trying to figure out when/where/how to play outside, and within 4:53, this Gentleman opened up this World to ME! I cannot THANK YOU, enough, mon ami! Merci Beaucoup!
Again, perfect videos. I'm in that point when you can improvise on not feel like you're always repeating those hendrix licks lol. I'm learning mode shapes through different ways, but I'm sure that yours would be the easiest, you make all easy. This video was really helpfull
Thank you very much! I really appreciate your videos that explain these concepts in such concise and easily grasped portions. Nicely done. I am so glad I stumbled upon your videos... you have a new fan!!!

mangasprai 6 months ago
@mangasprai It's a big aspect of playing fusion, using notes that are outside. It adds a different feel.

yeah i try to understand, but hey, isnt random only.. random?

you just need to play notes outside ? is there any relationship between those notes and the chord being played ? or are they just outsider notes ?
exbogus 1 year ago
@exbogus Yep! No relation, just outside. :-)
Wallimann 1 year ago
@exbogus you could try using the altered scale of the scale you're in, i.e. if you're in C Dorian, as you are here, then you'd use C altered scale, because that includes all the "out" notes.
