Wow - not sure how many Trek fans are here but, I was surprised to find out Mrs Danvers was the High Vulcan priestess who fused Spock's katra back into his body in the 'Search for Spock' xD Pretty cool...
These last parts are just exquisite. Hitchcock was a genius. They both grow up fast, and they each do it to shield the other from some impending nastiness. Rebecca (and Ms Danvers) revelled in having a stepped-on man under her thumb, and now Maxim has a girl who really will stand by him, just for him. The guy must have had a miserable childhood. But isn't it surprising how so many other people had been wishing Rebecca dead - even making plans on it.
Thanks to this movie, I've discovered the real charm of George Sanders, after having seen him in three or four movies before. I've always adored him but never loved as much as upon watching 'Rebecca".
George Sanders didn't commit suicide because he was bored, he killed himself because he was lonely, sick and depressed. He was a fragile, insecure man to begin with and went completely downhill after his wife Benita died in 1967 after an extremely painful battle with bone cancer. The Gabors, his stepdaughter Juliet, and his sister Margaret were all devoted to him but he didn't want to become an invalid and become burdensome to his loved ones.
You are absolutely correct! The suicide note about being bored was just George keeping his facade up until the end. The note to his sister to"don't be sad. I am just anticipating the inevitable by a few years s the real note!
OMG! it's shere Khan! i just realized it. the whole time i was like WHERE HAVE I HEARD HIS VOICE??? IT WAS DRIVING ME INSANE! and it's from the JUNGLE BOOK!!!
@blkchk why? "Dear World, I am leaving because I am bored. I feel I have lived long enough. I am leaving you with your worries in this sweet cesspool. Good luck." Went out like a true pimp.
@mrbeefy1515 You think 'a pimp' is someone to emulate and favorably compare someone to? I think it's a shame when anyone can't find something in this world to stimulate their interest. If that's why he did it, then he took the lazy way out. JMO.
@blkchk nah he was sick and going downhill anyway. its all about knowin when to throw in the towel and having the balls to do it instead of draggin on like a pathetic maggot
U don;t blame Maxim for killing Rebecca. It would be hard for anyone to live a life like that. and it was very hard to get a divorce in those days. you had to have a very good reason for getting divorced and maxim didn't have any good reason because of the deal that he and rebecca had made.
you can tell that she doesn't look like a scared cat anymore now that she's learned about rebecca and everything. she seems to have a calm about her now
@recordedpodcast thats odd,i had to read this book in english class this year, and of cousrse my teacher is Dr. Nerd and goes into every detail of the book, but he did find a few things in the book that i wouldn't have noticed, and he figured out the aproximate age of the main character and maxim, i guess maxim is supposed to be 42 and the main character 21, ill have to ask my teacher how he figured it out but he also pointed out a few other cool things from little details i ever noticed.
I really like Maxim, but it's funny how so many people are on his side and think Favell is the bad guy. Maxim's the one who killed his wife, and Favell is the one trying to see that justice is done. The worst thing Favell did was sleep with his cousin, but it was obviously consensual.
Favell is not trying to get justice done, he's trying to blackmail Maxim. While Maxim is definitely not a good person, his crime was done in anger, and Favell does not have that excuse. And while you are right in saying that the relationship between Favell and Rebecca was consensual, they were using Maxim's love of Manderley for their affair, and Favell gloats about it, too.
Well, throughout most of the book, I don't feel pity for her, but in this scene, I do. Favell is using her, and she really doesn't seem to know what to do about him. She was loyal to Rebecca, but to a fault. I just try to picture if I was in her shoes, and it kinda changes the perception. : )
She was loyal to Rebecca but she was also in loved with her. She wanted Rebecca for herself. But, no, I do not pity Ms. Danvers. She was a true man hater and a crazy stalker to boot.
Omg yes!!!! She was my favorite character in the book and I absolutely loved her. I know she's derranged and a total bitch to the narrator, but her character completely fascinated me.
back then, the term cousin frequently had imaginary quotation marks around it, example: Oh no, nothings going on...I'm just taking a trip to paris with my..."Cousin".
@Eston83 it's his voice that gets me, LOVE his voice!!!! he's a really good scumbag in 'The Ghost and Mrs. Muir', you should see that one, GREAT movie!!!
@danaeashley22 me 2. Women dress like crap today, even you girls as old as 8. If you want to see well dressed women, one has to go to the Kentucky Derby or to England to visit the aritrocrats. Shame that american women are proud to dress as floozies
@danaeashley22 I agree...and Sir Laurence is impossibly handsome! It's hard to miss the strong presence he emanates.
I was 16 when I saw the entire film and had seen a clip of it 4 years before in English class. I couldnt remember the particular clip...I could only vaguely remember that the main actor was young, had a moustache and was handsome...this has to speak for itself! :)
HarborGuy meant to say 'Stars' but letter T is right next to letter R so he/she must have tapped it not meaning to. And I think he's right, baack then, actors/actresses could act.
The film's almost over now, Sara! That means it's nearly time to come and find your Sam... I wish anyway
