Shouldn't have thrown the spoiler in there at the end. With these tags that was a great way to promote the show and get people to watch and actually become aware of the complexities of American politics before the next time they vote. Now they all know the end. Granted people should still definitely watch the show before the next time they vote, no matter which party they support. Throw a McCain tag in there as well.
Arnold Vinick was a real maverick who didn't have to announce it to the world every 5 minutes. Not to mention, he was a pro-choice atheist/agnostic. Of course, in real life, Republicans would never nominate anyone like that.
Actually he wasn't, at least in the beginning. Nobody in the show knew Emmanuel. There was the fish thing, but this was later (Emmanuel's brother was the agent of one of the producers).
@cjk002 A year or so ago, a reporter asked Bradley Whitford if his Josh Lyman character was based on Rahm Emanuel. Brad smiled and said "Fuck no!". That was a joke about then-recent revelations that while serving as President Obama's chief of staff, Emanuel frequently swore at Congressmen.
It's close enough...offering Secretary of State to a once political opponent. He'd never offer it to McCain though, their foreign policy views are very different (unlike Santos and Vinick)
As a Democrate I must inform you that Vinnick was supose to win. However with the death of JOhn Spencer the writers thought it would be to much if Santos lost both his VP and the elections on the same day. Also to be accurate Vinnick is a combination of McCain and his predeseesor Barry Goldwater.

YES! I was just thinking to myself last week that the more I look at Obama the more I SEE Matt Santos! That more than any other reason is why I'm voting for Obama. A chance for a man who actually has principles!
That said, McCain doesn't hold a candle to Arnold Vinick. If he did, we'd all be in real trouble.
Hey, people like watching uplifting and optimistic television. I don't think you'd get a big audience for righteous stagnation. Doesn't make for good TV.

Sounds like a propaganda at it's best...or worst. Convince people via a TV show that this is the way they should vote.

that was a cheap shot!
the show was finished before Obama even started running for president.
The last episode aired in early 2006.

@kmrs1959 Had it not been for JOhn Spencers death Vinnick would have one the election in The West wing

Odd that they connect him with Santos. Seems he based himself on Bartlet.

Vinick was actually a Catholic who lost his faith after his wife passed away.

You forgot, socialist, Marxist, and the auntie-christ.
Idiot.

Lets hope the predictive powers of the writers aren't that strong...they originally meant for Santos to loose

Santos was explicitly based on Obama. Still, the similarities are quite impressive. Life imitating art imitating life.

so they based a show 2 years ago on some senator? doubt it.

The West Wing was communist agit-prop.

Also Obama's "A More Perfect Union" was used in a Jed Bartlet speech at the State of the Union address.

That was really interesting to see the similarities...but I just wanna clear something up...(even though it really isn't the point lol)
The writers said I think on the 7th season DVDs that they originally wanted Vinick to win but since John Spencer passed away they changed their mind.
-Sorry I'm a west wing buff...love that show
