I think the Dyke comments are a bit derragatory in the sense that Xena is a beautifully feminine woman but at the same time is a very tough tall big woman. She was a warrioress but even behind scenes you can see a very feminine soft side to this woman. From the beginning its evident that Xena has an attraction to the male counterpart and likely prefers males but she also mistrusts them. I think its a bit akward to put her on the spot because she had a devoted relationship with a woman.

Gosh I think the whole gay/bi/straight dispute is pathetic. The series was never made solely to the gay & lesbian/bisexual community nor to exclude either them or those straight. First of all its evident Xena WASN'T GAY, for one she had a daughter named Livia & had love affairs with many prime male characters. Its also plainly visible that Xena & Gabrielle had a very close relationship that included sex but was not limited to some primordial sexual bond. Even Gabrielle was seen with a man once.

It was a bit disengenuous of Lucy to say they only picked up on the subtext followers after the 5th season...even in Season 1, Episode 19 Altared States, in the river scene they were very strongly playing up to the subtexters....

just imagine, being one of them, travelling alone together, all you can depend on is each other. that person becomes your family.

I don't agree. These two women traveled together, ate together, fought together, risked their lives for each other, died for each other, cared for a child together, constantly declared their love for each other, and knew that they were soul mates. And it's impossible for me to believe that Xena and Gabrielle weren't in a relationship. Watching the whole series, it's clear in my mind that they were in love with each other.

@bellavic10 They are soulmates , not only best friends, and they really are in a relationship as a couple (people like or not) ... It gets all clear in the last three seasons, like in S06E20 "Soul Possession" when after Xena (in Joxer - male body ) married Gabrielle (female) and in the end of this episode, Xena goes back to her own body.. So.. What do you think? She and Gabriella won't be married anymore? Won't they love each other anymore just because they are two women?

oh but come on you gotta admit that show did well regardless of the whole lesbian thing...even before the subtext started the show was already a huge hit so u cant really base the shows success on that. i mean 60 countries and being one of the most watched shows in the world? that's a fucking amaing acheivement.

oh yeah so people won't hate me later on I am a huge fan of lucy lawless seen almost all the movies she's done and everything... want to go to the conventions and thank god she hasn't done a poor interview with no meaning like this one again... love her truly as a person and an actress but thank god she came to sense that this type of interview of sex and money has nothing to do with her as a talented actress... She is a sexual icon both gay and str8 and a truly talented woman...

I love Lucy Lawless but gurlie plz don't ever do an interview acting like "wut ever" again... I swear... Kevin Sorbo he's aight I guess Im more of a lucy lawless fan and always thought hercules side kick was the hot one... the blond hair caucasian blue eyes had me drooling all over lolz... back in their day lolz... oh well yeah didn't like the way this interview was perceived that much and just hated it from start to end...

yeah this is the first time i see them not embracing the gays/lesbians... i mean Xena/Lucy sorry to tell yah but the gay community is the only reason your show became an international worldwide hitttttt... gay women are not afraid of being manly so yeahhhh pretty much sums it up... eventually you would of had a good run but not as good as the gay community on your side... kinda stupid for them to handle it so bad and just freaking low on their part... i mean damn Lucy even said,"Xena is GAY".

Ugh, I hate how during filming of the series they denied the lesbian subtext just to keep some of the fans, then after the show ended, they embraced it and were all like "hey, they were gay, accept it!". I love XWP but the way they handled that was so manipulative, it annoys me. Thanks for posting btw, loved it =]

OMG it annoyed me too. Actually I used to watch the show when I was a kid and it confused the crap out of me. One moment Xena kisses Gabrielle, the next she is falling inlove with Ulisses. But at the same time, there hasn't been another show that has handled it as well as Xena, I think.

She injured her pelvis doing a skit on "The Tonight Show." I don't remember which season (3 or 4?), but they had to rewrite some of the Xena storylines because Lucy couldn't film the scenes.
