Canterbury scene had a lot of English Medieval-Rennaissance stuff. Maybe is like Grateful Dead taking things like bluegrass and other american psychedelic band with the Folk things... Made something new takin something old from his wn countries..
There are lots of Beat Club compilation DVDs around. I don't recall this being on any that I have, though. I wish the BBC had been as careful of their archive material.
This and the Motherlight (Bobak, Jons, Malone) album were two of the best from the psychedelic era.
Yup, classic song from my favorite group for a number of years. I've been a Caravan fan since about 1971 when a friend scored their first lp, this song is from, out of a cutout record bin. I never thought I'd ever get the chance to actually see any of these old performances. If not for YouTube I still wouldn't have. Vintage music vids like these, in a good quality copy, should be made available to the general public, in the same way as you can download an MP3. I'd even pay! Someone take note.
I would say it is because they just wanted to throw something psychedlic looking around on screen, and that vinyl was probably lying around somewhere...that, or the song is inspired in some way by that album??
I see the connection in the keyboard department...Hardin & York is a spin-off of the Spencer Davis Group...not really Canterbury but certainly in the neighborhood. Indeed it had to be the immediate availability of a psyche looking LP cover laying around.
Titus Groan Maxophone Tripsichord Music Box Leigh Stephens' Red Weather Margo Guryan Hardin & York High Tide Skin Alley Ibliss A Young Man's Gash Rumplestiltskin Spektakel Maypole Toe Fat Nektar Brainticket
Here's my list: Caravan, Caravan, Caravan, Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt, Extravaganza by Stackridge, any Kinks from the 60's, Tarkus, Fragile, Relayer, Tyrannosaurus Rex (any) + a lot of T.Rex, Cockney Rebel (any), Crimson, Minstrel in the Gallery, Beatles (of course), Band on the Run, Waiting for the Sun (the only Yanks here), Madness, Smiths, OMG, that will never end! And, of course, the early 10CC!
the undisputable top 10 bands ever! 10.Huey Lewis & the News 9.Caravan 7.Stealer's Wheel 6.Skinny Puppy 5.NRBQ,Toto(tie) 4.Bolt Thrower 3.Nurse With Wound 2.Big Shirley and the Tacos 1.EMF...nuff sed,end of discussion!!!
Brilliant, the sound of the keyboards is heavenly, so nice to have no guitar solos....saw them several times, once in Penzance `72....amazing....in the all time top 5 bands (others Grateful dead, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Prefab Sprout) also love Soft machine (early of course) and the wonderful Kevin Ayers. R.
One and Two (Soft Machine), Yeti (Amon Düül II), Caravan (Caravan), Cosmic Jokers (Cosmic Jokers), Air Conditioning (Curved Air), In A Glass House (Gentle Giant), The Cheerful Insanity of (Giles Giles and Fripp), Larks' Toungue In Aspic (King Crimson), Shooting At The Moon (Kevin Ayers), Inner Mounting Flame (Mahavishnu Orchestra), Bitches Brew (Miles Davis), The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (The Pink Floyd), Third (Soft Machine), Man I cannot only name ten. Thats outrageous.
Argus, and Red, of course... quintessentiall guitar class. Larks' too, a must have. May I add Focus III, Nursery Crymes, Selling England By The Pound, ELP's first album, Deep Purple's live double album, (Here's the big secret..) The Alchemist by Home, The Butterfly Ball by Roger Glover and frinds,
Hot Rats and Salad great! I never got into The Band - (I will now explore) Want One (Rufus Wainright) is well worth the effort. Then there are the 400 others worthy of mention! But let's not go there. haha ;) Tarkus, Trilogy, Fragile, Electric Ladyland, Layla and assorted Love Songs, Crime of the Century, anything by Steely Dan, KT Tunstall, Imogen Heap, Zero 7, Alan Price or Georgie Fame, Steve Hillage, The Who, Prefab Sprout and finally my little secret....Erik Mongrain's "airtap"
...and Abbey Road, Blood on the Tracks, Mirage, The Snow Goose, In Rock, some Cat Stevens, Moving Waves, Apostrophe, Joe's Garage, Trespass, Giles Giles & Fripp, Living in the Past, Songs from the Wood, Islands, Lark's, Starless, Red, Wild Life, Venus and Mars, A Night at the Opera, A Time and a Word, more Caravan, some Bonzo Dog, Delaney & Bonnie, Dust, Poco, Argus... phew! All these masterpieces, and still the majority of people prefer to listen to some REAL CRAP. Oh my...
In The Land of Grey and Pink, Close To The Edge, Foxtrot, Pictures At An Exhibition (ELP), OK Computer, Want One (Rufus Wainright), All Things Must Pass, A Passion Play, In The Court Of the Crimosn King, The White Album (Beatles)/Led Zeppelin IV (is a joint 10th allowed?!)
Man... your list is challenging! I would take out OK Computer (didn't "got" it till this day), Want One ('cause I don't know it), Pictures and replace for Hot Rats (Zappa), Brain Salad (ELP) and The Band's Brown Album. A tentative list, at least. ;)
gustavo, you are the man! where do you find ths stuff, and please post more of it! You've made a 50 year old man very happy!!! Thanks also for the National Health post - just brilliant!
Me too, I wonder what your other four are.....mine are (and this is difficult), not in any order......Yes, Genesis (original line-up), King Crimson and almost anything by George Harrison (but not everything!) Now then, top 10 albums of all time? :)
George is my hero. :D The other bands would be Beatles, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and The Band... probably (haha!). Now, the top 10 albums is a real tricky one...
I was going to add the Tull, but George popped into my head! Beatles of course! So, the top 10 albums is always a challenge, and always contentious, but as we're YouTube friends, we can agree to disagree if necessary. Ok, let's go - 30 minutes and counting. (No particular order necessary, just our favourite 10) :D
this song is called Magic Man, i think it was performed on beat club back in 68. It was performed with Place Of My Own cause they were released as singles in europe. dude if you have Place of My Own, please put it up!!
Thanks a lot! Will update the infos shortly. Unfortunately, I don't have the other performance. This one is part of a DVD-R with 2 Caravan songs (this and Golf Girl - already available here, that's why I didn't upped it too), plus some Hatfield and the North, National Health, etc...
did he mention Soft Machine at about 2:17? Awesome!

Such magic! This is of a different order: an untouchable and so special English beauty. And it's terrific in general of course as well.

Why does the album cover of Hardin & York's "Tomorrow Today" fade through the video at the one minute mark, and then again a couple minutes later?

I have no idea... It was already this way on the source I got.

Probably the person doing the video effects for Beat Club thought it was a cool looking image, and probably used it as number of times on the show.
