Over the years I've learned that to play sloppy with feel you must be able to play it note for note first, then the 'sloop' is expressive instead of trying too hard...

I learned this from a great guitar player. Don't confuse sloppy blues with inability. All the slopp from a good player is intentional not because they just couldn't quite get it.
