Do you have to smile when you blow the horn to get the 'emotion'? If you say Paul Desmond doesn't have the feeling when he played his sax, then I don't know what to say. It only shows that you don't know anything about him at all. Desmond died from lung cancer in 1977. Dave Brubeck is still alive and is 88.
Paul Desmond is such an incredible musician, I saw a clip of him performing when he was about 80 and he still had the magic. I wonder if he's still alive?
I think he is dead actually. His son Dave Brubeck is my brothers drum teacher, and his son Chris Brubeck taught me bass. I'll have to check in with them to be sure.
That's so true. It's not a song. A song is sung. My piano teacher would get really annoyed whenever I reffered to Moonlight Sonata as a song. it's a piece of music she would say. And this is a wonderful piece of music.
The add of bossa rythme is a really nice experience on Take Five. And Paul is definitely the greatest saxophonist, he plays only 40 seconds but it's difficult to describe the emotion that Desmond put into his instrument. Fabulous.
what emotion? hes not putting anything to it he's its you who listen to get some sort of a feeling which is different for every1, when u reach to that level when u play u consider so many aspects which come from all of the learning u been doing for year..its like hes playing and thinking "oh wow i'm so emotional right now"..
@darkmaides i think that his friend Desmond play with a serious cancer and died some month after this solo, that's why i say emotion and i never hear Brubeck plays like that.
Oh my sweet lord what a feeling in this music. Desmond is a devil on his instrument, and so is Dave. But i miss mr morello on the drum. Where i Mr wright on the bass? But it swings anyway
Good.. I just love the songs like this. Are there any other group or bands performing Dave's songs? I've heard one that sounds a bit different. However, I love the original one:).
Joe had health issues and taught privately for many years. Doing road gigs, even in big halls, has to wear on one after nearly a decade. Alan Dawson (tony williams teacher) took Joes place for several years after his departure.
I love the fact that they all look EXACTLY how they did before, but older versions. Thats exactly how you would have imagined the would have looked if you only saw them in the 50's

Nice Clip of Dave playing HIS GREAT STANDARD!!, This Jazz clip will live on forever!!great stuff!! also @ You Tube Marc Jones Vocalist he sings well! ,pop/jazz standards ,check him out!!
Older, sure - but "beat down" - ? They still sounded pretty good to me - true, only one Joe Morello - but this guy's got some pretty decent chops of his own - obviously the "original" DBQ (Brubeck, Desmond, Morello and Wright) will always be the greatest ...
Actually the original quartet c. 1951 had Bob Bates and Joe Dodge on bass and drums respectively. Check out albums like "Jazz goes to College", "Jazz Red Hot and Cool". And another early recording "Jazz at Oberlin" had Ron Crotty and Lloyd Davis on bass and drums.
lcal39 - Thanks for the reminder; I had forgotten the names, but knew that the quartet I refer to as the "original" band was not truly composed of the first ones to play with Dave. But without a doubt Desmond/Morello/ Wright were the most famous - and most would agree - the best, eh? I will check out those albums - still available, I assume, via Amazon, etc.? I'd probably recognize a few of those tunes from so long ago. Thanks again.
and the drummer...i think i jizzed myself

@ aibezjm:
the drummer you say "good" is Alan Dawson, the world most important drums teacher in the last 40 years.
Some of his pupils: Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Steve Smith...
