Tracey Ullman said that the head of Stiff records, her label, believed that 'songs sounded slower on the radio' so he made his producers speed them all up.
This song was originally recorded by Irma Thomas, a woefully underappreciated soul singer from New Orleans, in 1964. If you like Tracey's version (and I do, a lot), you should definitely check out the original.
Omg i typed this in but didnt think it would av bin on hahaha i remember doing this in my last year at junior skool with a group of friends we made a dance up to it so this has made me smile brought back happy memories..LOL XX

The black-haired backing vocalist in the video looks like Brenda Gilhooly. Anyone know if it is?
When this came out, I remember if you played the 7" single at 33rpm instead of 45, it sounded like a normal-speed doo-wop version with men singing.

That black-haired woman is Rosemarie Ford! Remember her? Generation Game with Bruce Forsyth and married to Robert Lindsay.

Not great quality. But great to find it here and be able to view it.

Breakaway.

@lcalegan I think you'll find Beryl Marsden did a version in 1963. She was no relation to Gerry Marsden of the Pacemakers fame.

@DoctorScrumpy Thanks for that. I'm going to seek that version out too!

I dig Tracey --she's channeling Diana Ross here (vocally - and it's MISS ROSS to you)....
