  • I tried running it, which resulted in my video card having a seizure and it went bsod.

  • they made use of DirectX for the textures and models in the game, but still it's an amazing work with only 96Kb.

  • amazing game, i can´t understand yet how they could do it, i just played on my gtx460 and this thing consumes 300mb of video ram and uses around 30-40% of gpu, WTH, i will tell you what this is, sorcery

  • @maurocds Well that is the only way it can work... the thing generates the textures and sounds from automated algorithms, and fills up the memory with the final results. The game actually is 300Mbytes, but with a very small starter EXE file. If i wanted to be a bit evil, i said (and i wouldn't lie) it is just an illusion. Of course it's hard to do, but this can be said for illusionists too. Their trick is easy to think of but hard to execute. (also the 3d is simply handled by DirectX)

  • @AMYuntold As long as the content is 96 kbs, and can be distributed via relatively slow means (such an internet connection) as such, it's an useful illusion.

    After all, there are practically no (gaming) computers today with less than 2 gb's of RAM.

  • @johntrevy Because they don't know how to program efficiently ; D This uses procedural generation. Basically letting the computer do the predefining according to specific algorithms instead of the source code.

    Um, the same amount of RAM is used with this 96kb demo, because this RAM space is occupied by the textures generated by a set of formulas. The impressive thing about this demo is that they can generate so much with only 96kb of data, but after the game is loaded, it takes the some processing power.

  • @TheoMW2 You should try to understand what a 96KB is. That's not a real game. You can't compare it, as a whole, to games even from before 2006 (although it's a great 96KB game!) Average Quake ]|[ weapon sound is about 50KB in size (they are just 16bit 22kHz mono samples). If you ever played Quake 3 or Quake Live you have definitely seen jump pads. Single texture for a jump pad is about 40KB in size. Textures and sounds of Quake 3 (w/o music) combined give >96MB that's 1000 copies of .kkrieger

  • @marshad82 As a developer and artist for MechWarrior: Living Legends (and a demo-scene follower since the 90's), I still find this impressive.

    For reference, my .psd's for a single battlemech texture tend to run around 250MB: the final texture rendered to .tif is still 12MB.

    This game has real time lighting and shadows, bump maps, textures that are more detailed than what you can find in today's console games, and physics! All that in 96 kb. You probably never played quake 2 if you state this is how quake 2 looked like...

  • my laptop runs this at the same speed it does cod 4 its uber slow on my comp but it works awesomly cod4 is getting boring  i have the textures down on the lowest setting and it still lags i need a new graphics card for my laptop

  • Look, this is not about how "cool" this game is. It's about the fact that the entire game takes only 96 KB. That's KILO not mega or gigabytes! In other words, this would fit on ONE floppy disk, in fact almost 15 times! A FLOPPY, dude - do you even remember what that is??

  • As a prospective game designer, this game is rather interesting in how it was made... Granted, it's not revolutionary in it's play-style (which is much akin to classic Doom and Quake, however... A game with these graphics, and playable at such a small size is awesome. Can you imagine a game the size of your normal FPS, using this method? It'd probably be astounding, graphically.

  • What is brilliant about this game is not the game itself, rather the technique that is use in it's making. Procedural generation is considered hard at best all the textures, the models, everything is produced with algorithms.

    This game is the Shake and Bake of computer science i.e the foundation has been made but the actual product comes to fruitition when one uses the product.

  • There are cool demos(not tech demos) made by demoscene in 64k,4k,1k and even in bytes. The guys who made kkrieger are also making demos(farbraush).

    .kkrieger was a CHALLENGE before being a video game! The goal of the developpers was to make a video game that was less than 1 MB. They did it successfully with 97KB.

  • Here's what I don't get: where does the game take its textures,sound, models, lighting,and shaders from? You're not trying to tell me that it's all packed into a tiny 96kb file, are you? I don't think file compression technology has gone that far yet, but I might be wrong.

    I have no idea how this is possible, but it amazes me.

  • First, maybe the .exe is packed with farb-rasuch packing tool (kkrunchy), but not to far as 15 MB to 65 kb (is not the real deal).

  • The key in all farb-rasuch and almost all demogroups coding is that everything is created in real time. Is nos about compression, it's about generation.

  • The difference between 'traditional' games and this is that in normal pc games you get all data previously encoded, generated, interpreted, (.jpgs, .mpgs, textures, .pngs, .mp3 and any other media file), but in Kkriegger the program has te code inside that indicates whats gonna be generated at the time by te program itself (KB -kebby- has made a great synthetizer and Chaos a great demo tool, the werkzeug3).

  • That's why there's no needing of another soft nor file download, but requieres a good system (Fast Processor, RAM Memory and a nice Graphic Card) for running this. In you want space you need performace.

  • The reason why it's so small is they made it using procedural techniques. Most games use up a ton of hard drive space to record all the models and graphics of a game, instead this one records only the 'history' or procedural knowledge of the models and graphics. It also uses minimal looping sounds ot save a lot of space. It saves a ton of space from models, graphics, and sounds in exchange for requiring a fast processor and graphics card.

  • please re-read oberon79 posts, he said compacted, not compressed. the 96kb file is basically nothing but the blueprint for the game, literally everything gets built from scratch and loaded into memory when you launch it (which, of course, takes up a significant amount of time). The magic has a name: Procedural generation.

    my task manager measured roughly 340MB of RAM occupied by pno0001.exe (kkrieger executable) after complete load.

  • 340mb of RAM is actually quite a small amount of space for a game to use. I've gotten BF2 to use up to 1.3GB of RAM

  • 96kb is the size of the game; put it this way, the YouTube logo is 4kb. So 24 Youtube logo's would be equivalent in size to this entire game.
