Ivan Petroff could probably out sing most of the baritones working today. If his style was not entirrely Italiante, then neither were Lawrence Tibbett or Robert Merrill, strictly speaking. I'd willingly accept the difference for this level of vocal quality.
1948- Miami oopera at Miami high school Auditorium Rigoletto with Petroff, Hilde Reggiani,Bruno Landi, Francisco Naya (Marullo), Great performance and my first oopera LIVE! JRT
what had happend to the vocal technique industry.....listen...listen to this great sounds....where they are now.....we know today too much about technique.....but for god shake baritones like this petroff and other sounded more like basses big sounds.......what had happend?
Singing has, alas, been taken over by those who grate their chords or shout without tune. The vocal technique industry's legacy is left only to a diminished opera genre.
Artists like Petrov or Shtokolov or Reizen were not "overlooked". They were known very well to the West because of the venyl records you could buy in Prague or East Berlin, but unfortunately the Iron Curtain didn't allow these fabulous Russian artists to let them perform also live on stage in the West.
Therefore many thanks for "primabaritono" and others to post these wonderful Russian treasures on Youtube ! Fabulous singing !!
This particular Ivan Petroff is Bulgarian. He was born in 1899, and studied classical singing in Bologna before he emigrated to the US. So the iron curtain has nothing to do with him, really.
Grazie. Molto interessante, direi una lezione di canto. Purtroppo non ci sono più gli insegnanti di canto. E' incredibile la differenza tra questi cantanti lirici e gli attuali. Oggi è una vergogna!
A great voice, and the range of emotion, from rage to pleading, is remarkable. How on earth could artists of such talent and skill ever be so overlooked? Thank goodness for recordings and for diligent researchers and archivists such as yourself, primobaritono. Congratulations and many thanks for your posting of these most informative, and often positively startling videos. This is a marvellous series, a real earopener.
omg! he's adorable! i loved him!!!

It happened that today everyone wants to sing, no matter if they have got the gift and talent for that or not. And everyone thinks he is the best. :)
The true talents of the lyric art are simply ignored or killed.

Not only a great sounding voice and
sterling technique, but he breaks your
heart in this aria. Isn't that the point???
Today we endure the cardboard cutouts
and baritone"stars" who want to be
Perry Como. Petroff was not baritone
"light" but adapted his voice with color
and passion to breathe life into the roles
he sang as intended by the composer.
