I am a medical student, and I took Psychology as my undergraduate. I can tell you from my studies that I fully believe Psychiatrists impersonate medical doctors. It is not science, nor medicine. It does not "cure" there are no biopsy that they do that will actually consider you to be "depressed" or "bipolar" these are just labels. Unfortunately, more people do not know. 1 out of 8 children are on some prescription medication for a "disorder". Psychiatry is a political front.

Many people, not just those that profit monetarily want to believe that when any of your behavior is causing a problem in your life you have a disease. By being diagnosed with a disease people don't have to take responsibility for their own actions. This includes "the disease caused the suicide" not the medication - or I don't have to be responsible for my own or my minor child's behavior because they have a disease. This hurts everyone.

Antidepressants don't cause suicidal thoughts, it's quite the opposite, that's why they are called ANTI-depressants.

Some antidepressants have an agitating effect, though. If the patient has suicidial thoughts and the agitating effect hits in before the mood brightening effect, it can lead to real actions, instead of mere thoughts. But that period is over after a few days. Again: Antidepressants don't CAUSE suicidal thoughts.

If that were true, then the pharma companies wouldn't be required by law to list suicidal thoughts specifically on their prescriptions. You need to educate yourself before trying to educate others. You will find that there is a chemical reason why seratonin re-uptake inhibitors, the most popular anti-depressants can cause a person with MILD depression to become suicidal when having only used the medication for a few days or a few weeks. DO SOME RESEARCH and quit relying on the fallible FDA.

I don't know if CCHR is run by scientologists, but I do know from professional experience, that psychiatric drugs rarely make a significantly positive difference to those who take them, and in many cases, cause a deterioration - for which the unfortunate individual is usually prescribed more psychiatric drugs.

I'm not a scientologist, by the way, and I don't know enough to comment on whether scientology is superior to psychiatry - although I would guess it couldn't be any worse! ;)

I mean zyprexa often helps at fighting the symptoms, so that they can take part in life again. I don't have professional experience, but at least personal experience with zyprexa.

You are right, I generally DO oppose psychiatric treatment. I haven't undertaken any scientific studies personally, but only about 1 in 10 of the people I have worked with who are taking prescribed psychiatric medication, have experienced any benefit at all (either subjectively or objectively). A far smaller proportion have had the kind of positive response which the glossy psych adverts promise. The vast majority have deteriorated UNLESS they have access to good psychological therapy....

...however, many people are not helped by psychiatric medication at all, or worse, deteriorate on it - or are prescribed a cocktail of drugs, often with competing action on the CNS. Moreover, if I had a £1 for every time a doctor or psychiatrist has failed to detect even common underlying physiological conditions such as hyperthyroidism, I would be VERY rich. For those who are helped by psych meds, keep taking them! For those who aren't, there are plenty of effective alternatives. All the best!

In my opinion and from what i have experienced therapies are usually a combination of psychiatric medication and psychological therapy. Psychiatric medication is in many cases necessary to treat the worst symptoms.

Now i don't say that psychiatric medication alone is the solution for all problems, but neither would i oppose the whole field of psychiatry in general, just because the therapy doesn't always work. It is the responsibility of the attending doctor to choose the best therapy.

Alas, there are so many shite shrinks though, who only prescribe meds and don't refer for therapy because of £££. I've seen significant +ve changes in people with severe or enduring mental health problems who've taken steps to change their diet, get plenty of exercise and systematically unpick and modify their irrational thinking and behaviour. It's hard, but much easier than continuing to be mentally ill. I've also seen orthomolecular medicine work where psychiatric medicine has failed.

Money is only one reason. Don't forget that pharmaceutical companies spend a LOT of money advertising their wares. They also pay for outings for psychiatrists and other mental health staff, and fund training. They also fund the vast majority of the research into the medical/disease model of mental health, all the while doing what they can to discredit any other approaches which may be more efficacious than their products, which net them billions each year.

I've never seen any consumer oriented advertisement for psychatric medication like Ritalin here in germany. Would be pretty useless anyway, since it is available on prescription only and docs don't get paid on a per prescription basis here, they are even budgeted in what they can prescribe. That companies are financing a lot of the research is standard in pretty much every other field of research, too. I think these are more problems of the respective country specific systems.

There is a study in BioMed Central, that says that kids in the US are three times likelier prescribed antidepressants and stimulants than in Europe. In 2000 nearly 7% of US kids took psychotropic drugs of some kind, while only 2% did so in Germany.

Direct-to-consumer advertising is allowed in the US, but banned in Europe.

Government health plans in Europe have also cut down on the use of expensive, patent-protected drugs, especially antipsychotics and antidepressants.

Marijuana is the best anti-depressant in the world, bar none. That's why it grows everywhere. Animals live symbiotically with nature. We have always consumed mind-altering plants. We should loose the stigma placed on marijuana by the authorities and acknowledge that very small amounts of THC is very uplifting and positive and gives you insight as wells as increasing your creativity. Of course, if you take too much, then you just feel worse, but that goes for any substance, even coffee.

Insurance number 292.98

states "Canabis intoxiation" as a mental disorder.

This basically makes being high a mental illness.

"Canabis disorder not otherwise specified."

So if you use canabis for pain relief a psychiatrists could still lable you as being menatlly ill.

I was on Zoloft and it made me lose all remorse. Yes, I felt good, but I felt good about things I should have felt bad about.
