Somebody wiser than myself in the ways of baseball posted a comment about Earl Weaver that kind of answers this. In some situations the manager gets like that to take the heat off of a player that is arguing with an umpire. So if it escalates to an ejection, it's the manager getting ejected, not a start player. So yeah, you could say it's an act...but with reason.
