This was always one of my favorite scenes of all time from Star Trek Deep Space Nine. My friend Rob Martell and I, back in "the day," just about hacked up a lung when we first saw Worf come out, point at Quark and go: "YOU!!!" And the look on his face after he demonstrates how the cup plays Quark's ad when tipped? Priceless!
IMHO, Star Trek Deep Space Nine had probably the best character work in Star Trek history (although I felt it ENDED somewhat lamely).
"If all your little advertisements aren't purged from the system by the time I get back from the Gamma Quadrant, I will come to Quark's and believe me... I WILL have fun."
Communism or Capitalism are both different ways to control money. Money is used to control resources. In theory a society could be free of the need to manipulate people simply by having an abundance of resources. The choice between Capitalism and Communism is a false choice, the problem isn't how money is controlled, the problem is money itself. The fact that humans in Star Trek have no money is the greatest relevant example of liberty I've ever seen in science fiction.
@AgentGhost But in the Star Trek universe no one would really progress because there's little incentive. No one would invent a better transporter (they've been unchanged for 200 years) because there's no money in it. A few scientists might, so they can put that in their obituary when they die...but that's it.
Actually it's been stated that transporters and other tech has changed and improved. There is a standard of living but if you want a better one you work. People join starfleet for a variety of reasons such as tech opportunities, exploration, sense of duty etc.
@toomanyaccounts Not everyone is as ambitious as a starfleet cadet. Why not earn everything you have like the Ferengi, instead of stuff being given to you by Big Brother? I think human nature would have 5/6th of the world sitting on their asses doing nothing if the Federation gave people all they needed.
@AgentGhost So long as resources are finite there will be a perpetual struggle for control over those resources. Whether control is gained (and maintained) through atlatls or currency manipulation via national debt ratios is irrelevant. This combined need for shiny things and killing from a distance has driven mankind from cave dwellers to the present day; it is inescapable. Star Trek's utopia Earth is and will always remain a fantasy, nothing more.
@irishmike2182 Since the Cardassians are portrayed as arrogant, they would probably get a good belly laugh before purging the system and having their way with him, but Quark know he wouldn't dare try with them. He knows he can get away with it here with much less worry.
Kira hates Quark because he was a "collaborator" during the Occupation, but in the mirror universe, Quark was killed because he helped Terrans stow away on ships and escape. It stands to reason then than in the normal universal, he probably would've helped Bajorans in the same way, given it was a similar situation. Quark isn't at all evil - he is merely a Ferengi.
@edinscot56789 Kira did not hate Quark because he was a "collaborator", because Quark wasn't a collaborator, he was a Ferengi. collaborators were Bajorans who worked with the Kardasians. Kira hated Quark because he was a thief, black-marketeer, and all-around sneaky opportunist (i.e. a Ferengi).
Hilarious stuff! BTW, Nana Visitor is pregnant. You can see it if you look closely. The reason for the surrogate mother stuff that started in the very next episode was to cover up her real life pregnancy. And as if that isn't interesting enough, Alexander Siddig is the father.
nope, worf is defanately not a merry man!!! lol!!

This is Commie-Trek: The Next Oppression.

@Amar7605 Sure you can advertise! You just can't do it by hacking into a governmental communication system (or a warship, for that matter).

Lool, i'd like to tamper with Worf's replicator - so that his prune juice appears in a pink glass with a little pink umbrella and a curly straw.
With: "Klingons take it in the butt... without honour!" written on the glass.
Just to see the look on his face.

So to recap this scene:
Quark is opportunist and in fact went against Siskosrefusal to allow him to advertise on the station in season 2.

And Kira's idea of fun is quarks bar

Because his prune juice came in a cup with Quark's face on it, that sings the jingle when you tilt it to drink it. Which would get rather annoying.
