i'm trying to implement this feature into two bricks, however, i already have the entire program made in NXT-G. this RS-485 technology isn't possible in the NXT-G solution however, is it?
It would be real nice if via a master-slave config the master could send an application to the slave that on would run as a tokenized network. Such a framework would really spead up developing for this platform.

No, NXT-G can not access the high speed API functions. Maybe someone can create a block to do this.

how can i connect a dvd drive to the nxt to the nxt can make the dvd drive motor switch on and off (by pregramming it with nxt-g or something)

Did you program using NXC? If so I'd be interested to know the maximum number of short packets per second that could be transferred via RS485.

You could do this a lot easier if you used the bluetooth because I know you can do it with bricxcc
