I have read and read but cant find the comment I read several hours ago but did not have time to respond so here goes anyway. The comment was about trucks destroying the road and tax payers fitting the bill: for those that don't know- the owners of trucks actually pay more fuel tax per gallon then anyone else. We also get hit in the state the trucks are registered in and every state that truck traveled in ( IFTA ) I get charged more when I buy a truck and they say it all goes to roads.
lol, like we are going to bow to that threat.,, accept what comes,,your an ass and should have your license revoked, you dont threaten taxpayers then expect us to back you moron get of the road and stop whining
Hey man... Treat truck drivers with respect, they own the road first. Remember, it because of our drivers you get have a full grocery store at your disposal, why you can just go to a hardware store and get some goods. If anyone should get off the road first, it's pleasure drivers in cars.
Here is a novel concept. Maybe if the greedy/standard cooperate business practices of having to have merchandise, say, from New Orleans to LA in 24hrs wasn't so common practice in the trucking industry, truckers would not have to drive continued long hours on the highway to get said merchandise to its destination in such a short period of time.
@Catface91 truck drivers get paid to drive miles but they are only allowed to drive 11 hours and then rest for 10. If you really want to address the problem then push to have drivers paid by the hour no matter how many miles they drive. My pay,if I were still driving would come to 32.17 per hour. Most people get up an hour before work then drive to work and work 8 to 15 hours then drive back home. Most people get less rest then a driver is required to.
@Catface91 The corporations only have things shipped to keep up with consumers demand. Lets talk about greedy: you have so many things just because you want them. from the bed you sleep in to the underwear you have on- all frivolous and bought for your own comfort.Do your part and stop buying things! You don't need all the stuff you have.
@mrrodneyalong I didn't realize materials like a bed & underwear were considered frivolous. Yeah maybe you don't need more than 1 pair of things like underware, shirts & pants but I kinda of need a few.
No it's time we got rid of this wasteful, dangerous transport system and rebuilt our railways. Rail car is a far safer and more efficient transport system. The trucking industry causes untold numbers of injuries and deaths on our highways, and is wholly dependent on cheap oil. Cheap oil is going away, there's nothing anyone can do about that. The time to scrap these wasteful, dangerous trucks and go back to cheap, proven, railcar transport is now.
@jwallbanger youll not find anytime that truck drivers were statistically more responsible for deaths and even wrecks on the road then the common driver and automobile
@mrrodneyalong Trucks are big, heavy and deadly. They cause deaths just by being out there and operated by humans. Even if the stats show that truckers don't cause more accidents (cite please) taking them off the road will save thousands of lives. And long haul trucking as an alternative to railcar was enabled by cheap fuel. Before that trains hauled virtually all long distance freight. It will be that way again soon without some kind of energy miracle.
@mrrodneyalong OK Sorry I interpreted that wrong. Still, more than their share of fatal accidents. But the whole point is that you take them off the road and you solve a lot of problems. Not just less accidents, much less traffic, less fuel burned and therefore less pollution, less energy shortage. Trucking is a wasteful way to haul freight. I know it's a lot of jobs, but no amount of political will can create more oil. This is a hard reality truckers have to face.
@jwallbanger I agree that this would be the case. Can you agree with me that taking more cars off the road would be even more effective? I think the biggest issue concerning safety isnt the size of the vehicles by comparison but rather the lack of education of the operators in vehicles under 26,001 lbs. Remember the stats for the smaller vehicles (cars and pickups) represent the accidents of all kind, not just with trucks.
@mrrodneyalong Looking at the crash stats for commercial trucks over 26,001 lbs its obvious that as school and practical driver training requirements have increased, crashes have decreased. I don't see why the same results couldn't be duplicated with the general public. I paid $6,000, 8 weeks and 12,000 miles to be able to obtain the title of a commercial driver. When I got my class D license I literally read the book in the parking lot for 35min took the written test and drove 2 miles.
@mrrodneyalong The large separation in education and skill levels between the commercial drivers and the general public is that of college graduate and a 2nd year middle school student.
I can always tell when someone knows nothing about the trucking industry. I have helped run a trucking company since I was young, I know what it's all about. I can tell you right now, you have no clue. Most wrecks are from some idiot 4 wheeler driver (someone in a car), pulling off retarded stunts around truckers.
@mythril4 so being a trucking company helper makes you some kind of expert on accident statistics? truckers are human and humans are fallible, and driving a huge heavy rig amongst much smaller, lighter vehicles is a recipe for fatalities, especially when they are foregoing sleep to make good time.
no matter what you can't deny that railcar transport is far safer and far more efficient/less polluting. trucking is only viable when gas prices are low enough as we learned in 2008.
I'll stick with my guns, having been on the roads, yeah, after watching what those little cars do in front of us ad around us. I know where you little paper el-statistics comes from, you talking about polluting, this has nothing to do with safety. All our stores and towns are still built next to rail roads?? Not to mention crowding cities with railways is going to be safe somehow? Until you spend the time on the road your self for 500,000 miles at least, you know nothing.
@mythril4 we once had far more working railways that handled all the freight we needed. the shift to trucking was mainly the result of GM lobbying hard for more tax dollars spent on highway construction. they also bought up train transport systems and shut them down, tore up tracks, scrapped the cars.
we will have to go back to trains, which ARE far safer by the way, once you truckers burn up the last of the cheap crude oil.
all your whining won't change energy shortage reality.
@jwallbanger your wrong for several reasons 1 the trucking industry isnt bound by crude oil. The industry will change as needed and use other fuels when they have to. 2 trains dont stop at every store, warehouse, company and distribution center. 3 People will not wait for 7 to 10 on most things as it drags across the nation on a train, its 2days for a truck.3 trucks have the ability to reroute around weather and disasters, Trains seldom do.
@mrrodneyalong What other fuels? Biodiesel cannot be produced in enough quantity to supply truckers' need for oil. We would need 5 earths to have enough farmland. There is no replacement, that's the root of the energy crisis, where have you been?
And, you didn't read my comment carefully. I said we ONCE had far more railways. Railcar used to supply all this countries' freight needs. Cheap oil allowed trucks to replace railcar because of convenience.
@jwallbanger there has never been a time since the horse and carriage that trucks have not moved freight and the truth is they will always be moving freight as long as people need or want products. The entire truck industry is a vital part of the economy as well. as war as other fuels are concerned; Hydrogen comes to mind. If you can run your car on it then a truck can be made that runs on it as well. when trucks become diesel electric like trains are I am sure the mpg will go up.
@mrrodneyalong You simply do not understand the reality of the energy crisis. Hydrogen is wishful thinking, a red herring put out there by neocon politicians to pacify people like you. If you research hydrogen you'll discover it is not a fuel, it's an energy carrier. It must be produced by very inefficiently adding energy to chemical processes. That energy must come from somewhere, and there's nowhere enough grid power to even come close to producing enough for trucking.
You consume, we live in... a consumer society. You can't drive a train to every town and city. Trains are like ships, they can only haul quantity to common areas which they do, from those common areas things have to be shipped in.
If you don't like this fact, you should learn to become Amish...oh yeah... they depend on trucks too... who knew..
I can't wait to watch your eyes while your kids play around all those railways they had to pack each town with, soooo safe I am sure.
@mythril4 so the warped, black and white reasoning in your mind is that to reject trucking without being a hypocrite is to also reject all technology and join the amish? that's fucking stupid. only a stupid person would say something like that. such an incredibly stupid argument doesn't even dignify a rational response.
back up your shit with stats, not anecdotes. anecdotes are not science, they're mainly just bullshit. i'm sure your trucker pals always blame cars for their fuckups.
trucking is just another dying trade in America. the government of Alberta is complaining that they cant find enough truckers to deal with our exports so we'll need to hire foriegn workers to fulfill the jobs. 90% will come from india and mexico and work for a third of the money. meanwhile the oil and meat is getting shipped just fine and once they come the jobs will go to the lowewst bidder.
i start at 4am, finish by around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. always lots of places to park at that time of day, but i see the heavy congestion as i am leaving. there is a problem that needs to be addressed. minnesota ain't the greatest for finding places to park either.
I drove over the road for 10 years, with no accidents, all 48 states. I never slept at night, always during the day, that way, you always have a parking spot waiting for you, less traffic and fewer cops, means less stress and less driving time.
all i can say is u are not plaining your trip very well because that rest area your are talking about i could always find a place be fore midnight, anyday of the week..yes they need more places to park but again it still means alot on how u plain your trip.
@runre46 Plan your trip? LMAO...I haul ass for 18 hours or so and should be able to find a place to sleep for 5 or 6 hours. Arkansas made it illeagle to park on off and on ramps but did not create an allternative parking solution, so fuck em'. Guess I'll have to park in the mayors yard again!
In all my times of driving in Virginia, it is appalling to see the lack of parking for truckers up there. These fools don't realize tha danger they are creating by ignoring this problem. i
The last time I drove in the states I drove the entire length of Washington State looking for a rest area on I5 that had room. I ended up near Oregon sleeping on an on ramp. It's worse up here in Canada.
Yea, and it's bullshit that they get away with shutting them down and using truck's as a target for revenue because there is no place to park. Yet they bitch that we cause most accidents do to fatigue. Something has to give somewhere.

Read closer driver, rest areas are closing across the US. This makes it better for all states. They save money from not having to maintain the rest areas, and the better chance Law enforcement has to writing tickets to drivers for violations for 11/14 rules. Its a win win for the states.
Well MIKEL0352...obviously you haven't been paying attention. We managed to get the 2 hr parking time limit removed. Truckers are now able to complete their mandated rest period without interruption. So to use the guise of law enforcement writing tickets as a position of win-win in this situation only demonstrates your being unaware of what's going on in the trucking industry. @jwallbanger In 2009, large trucks accounted for 10% of
all vehicle miles traveled and 4% of all

In motor vehicle crashes, large trucks
represented:
7% of vehicles in fatal crashes
2% of vehicles in injury crashes
3% of vehicles in property-damage-only
