Hello jkobylka! can you help me on how to setup a centralized watering system like yours? i would like to start a small scale rodent farm in my area. i find your watering system much easier to use than to give each bin a bottle of water and refill it every so often. i hope you could help me on this.
hey you no the pinkies in the frezzer on the plate are they dead from something else or does he get them out on the cage and put them in the frezzer alive
how can it be incorrect if more then one person told me this. theres alot of negitive feed back on Faunaclassieds. I know hes your friend and everything but you cant say anything good if theres alot of bad feed back on different web sites.
@thesunsetreptiles - I have nothing to gain here. Many people saying something doesn't make it true. I understand what you're saying but the facts are facts. They are expanding facilities and are constantly sold out because of high demand. Public perception is definitely negative about these guys and that makes it seem like they couldn't possibility doing well. I'm not here to defend. When you're shipping huge orders to zoos and distributing millions of rodents overseas facts are facts...
you know a pinky being born every 10 seconds if you think about it is reasnable, becuase how many pinkies does a mouse give birth to at once, like 10? so its not like a different mouse is popin out a pink every 10 secs. thats what kinda hit me when I first heard that, wow thats ALOT of mother mice..but not really
i have a question why is my female not poducing so many babies she only had 4 babies i have been feeding her lab blocks but i don't know what is up i have been feeding her peas i just started to feed all my rats and mice peas but the rat babies some seam to be dieing off because she is not feeding them so i fed the one girl who wasn't feeding them off to my 5 1/2 boa constrictor but i just need help on that question.
Millions of frozen mice from this comapny are being recalled because they contain SALMONELLA that has sickened over 400 people. New York Times: 7-30-2010
I wonder if the reason they have salmonella problems is because they don't feed them from the top. It looks like they instead put the food pellets in the bottom where which means that the feces and food gets mixed. I know- rodents live a messy life in nature, but in a colony if this size. In all the academic labs I have seen the mice are fed from the top. Of course these cages are more expensive which is probably why they don't use them here.
If you look towards the end of the video they start discussing the food and you can see the food is on the top not the bottom. I was a little concerned too until they got to the end of the video.
No, not at all, the food is on the top of the screen in the back. the pellets you see in the tubs is a Pine pellet bedding. Mainly used with horse stalls but great with rodents as thats what i use. And their collection does not have salmonella, when handling frozen rodents, chicken,or any meat for that matter, WASH YOUR HANDS and you wont get Salmonella.
Ok... but I don't know what the other facilities are like, they say rodentpro is usually great, but that they occasionally make mistakes that are horrible...
Sandra, while I prefer smaller mouse colonies myself, this set up is pretty standard in the industry. Mice prefer smaller enclosed spaces. It makes them feel secure.. less out in the open. Remember, these aren't "pet" mice. From what I can see in this short video, the mice look well taken care of and look healthy.
@grubbadub420 - Honestly, that is the most shocking part of their set up to visitors... it really barely smells at all. There are huge fans on one side of the building and vents on the other... the air is completely exchanged every few minutes. Justin K.
damn that is one hell of a facility I bred mice and rats in my garage for a year or so.... and it smelled horrible even tho I changed bedding weekly i guess no more rodentpro for me
"...have to dip shoes in insecticide...." The guy that comes in with the wheel burrow comes in, shuts the door, and walks right by the camera... where was the shoes dipping?
Just my thoughts/opinion, but Biggers/Callaham have a LOT of land and animals. The field they do the corn maze in, for example, would be exposed to lots of people who may carry 'tiny terribles' with them, so an employee could pick up something there, or from the puppy kennel right close to setup, or what not else. Whether the fields, animals, or what not else, it seems they have just as much chance of bringing something in just working around the area, just by going outside.
Justin, you can actually save your time and just ignore me for this vid, I am just giving you a hard time to see what you say about these little things.
I use mice direct, I love them, I have seen their stuff and know first hand it is all good up in Cleveland @ MD headquarters. The dipping thing doesn't bother me cause I know what the deal is and that even the dog kennel is clean, so there is no real concern from there or the fields. Like I said just giving you a hard time....
see i just wish people could see this.. because just think if there were any kind of band on snakes or other reptiles that may eat mice/rats... think of all these guys who would go out of business cuz there is no way having that many mice is cheep.... and they didn't eve show that building with the rats....
ive tired telling people who are for the snake band that.. and they all say those people could find diff jobs.. and that is BS!!! there would be way too many people lookin for a job at once
Sweet man!!! I usually order mice mice/rats from rodent pro I've been on mice direct's web-site before and I've ordered from them. I want to say in the long run rodent pro has always been cheaper for me after shipping is included and all. Why do you go with mice direct? This was really awesome to see sort of behind closed doors... I've never really given much thought about what a litteral pain in the ass it must be to house that many rats/mice and care for them.... WOW!
I can't speak for Rodent Pro, I use Mice Direct because I know they have a quality product and they are only about 30 minutes from my place. I can just swing by and pick up a few hundred live rats at a time. Justin K.

Although I don't think keeping mice in a warehouse is a good thing, this place is better than most. At least they don't overcrowd the bins.

hey justin,
i heard that if you hold a pinky mouse and then put it back in with its mother the mother will quit caring for it because it has human scent on it.
is this true?

@pagonaciliatis - not that ive experienced. As long as you put it back with the same mom, I've not had her reject them...

Holy cow, every 10 seconds?
I know this is a dumb question, but I always see people put food on the wire on top of the racks. How do the animals get the food?
And if anyone has used all 3, what has the best quality feeders, gourmet rodent, rodentpro, or mice direct?
jxz107 2 years ago
@jxz107 this place is the cheapest and this video is an example of how they raise the mice and what u get

@jxz107 Rodents eat the food through the wire. If the food is on the floor it makes a huge mess and much of it is wasted. Justin
