I was lucky enough to see this film when it first came out (I was 9 at the time and remember and being scared rigid by the rock snakes). To put this in perspective, Simon, the opening sequence was the first time we had EVER seen TB on a wide cinema screen. I think this was why they made such a big thing of the Zero X assembly sequence. On a full sized screen, with Barry Gray's music, it was a stunning sequence.
You have nailed it! I had exactly the same revelation when re-watching Thunderbirds as an adult. I had to fast forward the take off scenes, yet I still watched the rest as avidly as 20 odd years previously. My uncle Harry was editor on some episodes. Have never spoken much with him about it though. I am very busy making an animation adventure story of my own set in an English forest, and am steadfastly ignoring modern conventions, telling my own story my way, posting the odd update on Twitter.
Brilliant! I didn't get to see the Thunderbirds Are Go movie when it came out originally in the 1960s (it was in a theater too far way and for only a week), so I encountered the Zero X assembly only as an adult. Gah! I wonder what I would have made of it as a child? I grew up with Anderson from Supercar on.
