Carmichael's turn as Stanley Windrush in "I'm All Right Jack" was among his best.
"The Windrush Critique" at the end of that movie remains one of the best semi-soliloquies for 'Economic Patriotism' and against corrupt corporatism ever.
Got to know his elegant Lord Peter Wimsey in "Nine Tailors" and "Five Red Herrings". A great character brought into vivid life by this marvellous actor. I will miss you, my Lord.
@fkd1963 I'm with you on that. He WAS Lord Peter Wimsey. He brought a lot of pleasure to many, many people and I can believe it was his pleasure to bring the rest of us so much pleasure. RIP Ian.
I knew Ian and am saddened to learn of his death, even though he was 89 and so had had a decent innings...God bless you, 'Carmers' - and you still owe me an ice-cream! Love xxxx

So sad. My favourite actor and the only one who was able to play Lord Peter Wimsey to perfection.
