Gk Chesterton talked about this in his book Orthodoxy. Chesterton believed that what modern people called incontrovertible and unalterable scientific facts were in reality mysterious. And I quote: "When we are very young children we do not need fairy tales: we only need tales. Mere life is interesting enough. A child of seven is excited by being told that Tommy opened a door and saw a dragon. But a child of three is excited by being told that Tommy opened a door."

. . . or maybe you're onto it 'thejonhendricks' and it's just that the people creating these clips don't know how to overdub. For sure they don't know WHAT to overdub!!
But really people . . . WHY put in a back ground track at all?
This sums up why I strongly disagree with the use of the term "god." Western society seems to like to sum up all that is into a three-letter word in order to make things simple and it limits us so very much that it is sad -- beyond words -- to observe. Uncanny how some terms, such as "love," do not seem to have such a boxing-in effect. Enjoy every moment.
The map is not the territory. The Tao that can be spoken of or described is not the Tao, it transcends language. Names belittle and bring down the value of 'things'. Some see a tree, and say 'oh, its JUST a tree.' I see a tree and I see a magnificent microcosm of the Universe. Each point that splits into 2 different roads is the point where you make a decision that can take you unto 2 alternate realities. If you choose A, all of this will happen. If you choose B, all of that will happen.
@aliens106 than the person should be charged with the crime that they committed accordingly. There shouldnt be an added penalty for commiteing a crime just because you had ingested some plant previously. That doesnt make any sense. Its like accusing somebody of witchcraft
What I mean is: a sensible mind need a linquistic shell. TM is so certain of his own 'philosophical shell', that his own identity must had bored him like a straitjacket. Searching for the limits is typical for a curious mind like TM. Drugs can be an adventure, but I have the feeling that he blowed it out in disproportion: phenomenons in the mind are the big bang of his matter. The world outside his mind is shrinking, here begins his own taxanomic of illusions. But TM's words are most valuable.
A psychosis happens in a crisis to someone without purpose. Unexpected hallucinations can be terrifying because you are in a state of painful uncertainty. But when you artifical are in a secure situation and reproduce with drugs a psychosis then you can feel a triumph like a survivor. This is the heart of TM's intellectual proces. People without control over their minds hallucinate massive. A thinker certain of words will never feel that way: he wasn't total lost in a black hole of thoughts.
in modern day, it'd be rejection from culture. mckenna is a perfect example; many people will watch this video and think 'this guy is on drugs' and discredit his opinion.
@Grantofthefuture i was shooting for something more like an eternity in hell, but i'm cool with rejection. i've been told that mating with the cherebrium is a form of adulterey. but im cool with cultual rejection. i can live with that, especially in exchange for knowledge- good and evil :~)
What's amazing about Terence is that he not only has amazing ideas, but he also has the capability to verbalize his thoughts in a way that allows us to comprehend them perfectly.

@jadedmisanthropy i agree 100%. i think it's unfortunate that drug using today has just become this vehicle people ride in to be cool and hip when the shamans of old used it for the expansion and actualization of the mind.

You realise if it wan't for people like Aristotle there would be no Terrence? People like Plato and Aristotle set the ground work for modern philosophy. Why be negative towards them? Why should people forget them?
Never forget the fundamentals but dont be stuck there. Cutting edge ideas from 2,000 years ago provided the path towards cutting edge ideas out now, one more intricate thought at a time. Any extended informational regress 2,000 years backwards when we still have so much to learn and propagate, is simply memetic irresponsibility. As cutting edge as humanly possible is still not up to speed with mother nature. No need living in the past when we've got nature to learn from. Ideas evolve not devolve
I'm not saying to only rely on old philosophy, but history is important because it forces you to see life in a different perspective. Back then people didn't have all the modern distractions we do now, so in a way they were more in tune with their natural surroundings. You can learn a lot from anything in life, but to imply ancient philosophy is now obsolete is silly. Learning from the past helps you understand the present and decide the future.
I can see the value in what you are saying. I appreciate your following your challenging questions up with your answers. My bias has always favored man's last sane moment before the swarming competitive civilizations took over. The only reason I would not value the bias of the ancient western thinkers, is because nowadays we are benefiting from the conglomeration of east and west, out of which some middle ground resembling truth is now emerging in the form of people like Terrence & Neil Kramer
afterall, this video IS about 'Boundary Dissolution'. When a boundary comes in mind after watching this, u tend to want to dissolve it. Now its time to merge all those ancient philosphies together. Thats whats going on. No going back.
So the government who denies you the right to trip in the first place shall be the judge of who gets to trip. i see. Many interesting studies have been done on felons with pychedelics. Most reported that it helped them break out of the mentality that got them in trouble. Maybe "felons" are the ones who could benefit the most.
I think i read an article in the local paper about research on mushrooms. People who had had the Magic Mushroom experience even once in life, reported almost 0% bad influences, and reported a sense of 'Happiness' and positivity for longer terms. I still do it only with a selected group of people because of the stigma that comes if everyone knows, then even if you can't open a jar, it's because you're a stoner, wtf?
Although it might get a bit normal i think man, i mean opposites define each other, and for me personally..i love being able to be normal as much as tripping..the normal form is awesome too, the occassional trips just augment it. Although, i do agree that the society should be more open to people who're experiencing things that cannot be seen, as opposed to the new car or whatever
seriously whats the point of putting the background music man. i dont want u to TRY and make it trippy. thanks for ur adding of creativity but its not needed man, thanks for putting terrence up tho.
I proclaim Terence McKenna to be "the new age 'Prophet'", our very own "modern day 'Messiah'". From here forth be the dawn of self-actualization. Spread the word, "evolution of the mind is among us, for that time is now". - M.D.C.
well said! I truly believe that the process has started, and will continue although taking some length of time, people will still realize the futility of the material world created, and hopefully we'll find something between the capitalism/communism debate that'll fit us. Maybe it'll be technology, maybe it'll be something else (2012!)
What I think Terence means here is that words are not things, they are sonic symbols that are entangled in consensus reality. Therefore, abstractions are ultimately the very essence of all that is experienced in the form of feelings, and the moment a sound is assigned to it, it starts behaving differently, its essence is now familiar and not magical.

this is so stupid. So we're dumber for knowing what a bird is? Are we supposed to just speak gibberish to each other and expect humanity to cooperate?
What may be misunderstood, is that spoken language fails to communicate the whole of the human experience, that spoken language is actually inadequate in contrast to feelings.
John Locke's view on the failures of language is listed in books III and IV of "An Essay Concerning Human Understanding." McKenna's theory is pretty much the same as his. The question is, though, should it be ideally oriented toward information, or practically oriented toward provoking appropriate (ethical) behavior? If the latter is true, there's no need for telepathy, since it doesn't require thought transfer, but only minimally effective understanding.
Even if the second paradigm holds true, McKenna may still be right where mysterious experiences (for example, with psychedelics) can only be effectively communicated with thought transference since words cannot explain some experiences adequately enough to evoke the proper responsive action (like "the mushroom told me how to save the world, but no one will understand if I use words to tell them how").
In most, cases, however, I think communication should be oriented towards care for others instead of making sure the self (me, the speaker) effectively makes its thoughts known to the other perfectly . To replace words altogether with "better" methods of conversing seems somewhat selfish for that reason because it takes away the focus from the other. Another exception might be between two close friends or lovers where Plato's dialectic model of mutual talk and soul fusion would seem fit.
Okay let's try here....In fact, I believe that there is a great deal which we are able to and do perceive (on countless levels), but are, generally, unable to express. Still you shouldn't be so down on words, they have their magic, too. Poets rule!:)
but reality would call that retardation to look at things labeled by words as they way you would see it as a baby...its a risk but if you can overcome the mysticity of the object by gaining true knowledge behind the subject then that is the aim of taking psychedelics...
this shit was crazy true...I always get that being a baby in my crib feeling when taking salvia... Like flashbacks of "crib thoughts" How things were so bright and new. I like how he described this perception...very vivid.
We are TAUGHT to rationalise and reason using WORDS,our perception of reality is then fenced in and we can percieve of nothing else other than our taught version of reality.
nikamota- I have grappled with this same idea. I agree with the first half of your comment, but I think that the restriction is not so much in regards to what we can perceive, as it is in regards to what it is that we identify as reality - because we have the ability to explain it using common language and common understanding.
In fact, I believe that there is a great deal which we are able to and do perceive (on countless levels), but are, generally, unable to express. Still you shouldn't be so down on words, they have their magic, too.
In fact, I believe that there is a great deal which we are able to and do perceive (on countless levels), but are, generally, unable to express. Still you shouldn't be so down on words, they have their magic, too.
Each 'man' is a natural anarchist, who, paradoxically desires, that all other ideas should be in agreement with 'his' own.
Our only hope for any establishment of peace despite this paradox, is for us all to agree upon the rejection of physical violence as an acceptable form of behavior in any case.
I am spreading this one around. I hope that everyone will agree. Let us all hope so!

We are TAUGHT to rationalise and reason using WORDS,our perception of reality is then fenced in and we can percieve of nothing else other than our taught version of reality.

Gives new meaning to that script. The beginning of what? The 'world' as we know it? Listening to McKenna is mind expanding.

nikamota- I have grappled with this same idea.

Poets rule! :)

Happy New Year to all!
Here is a thought for the day:
Each 'man' is a natural anarchist, who, paradoxically desires, that all other ideas should be in agreement with 'his' own.
Our only hope for any establishment of peace despite this paradox, is for us all to agree upon the rejection of physical violence as an acceptable form of behavior in any case.
I am spreading this one around. I hope that everyone will agree. Let us all hope so!
Peace.
