people live together, therefore inevatably their culture is affected by others. Turks and Kurds live together. Kurds live in Syria, Iran and Turkey. Kurds constitute one-third of Turkey's population. In Turkey twenty million Kurds live with Turks and other people from different origins. Turkey is a multi-cultural nation based on different races living together for hundreds of years. I use the the word Turkish to refer to all ethnic communities in Turkey like we use American for different races.
To those who say hewas aGreek,I ask if they know "Cemil" is a GreekorTurkish name. And whether "Tambur" is a GreekorTurkish instrument.Plse do a little research before making comment.Of course,Music is universal, but we know "Tanburi Cemil Bey" is a Turk inthe same way we know Beethovan was a German. If you say Beethovan wasnot a German, but a GreekorTurk,Germans wouldget angry. And you cannot defend yourself by just saying "music is universal, not national".I like both GreeksandTurks.Great nations
@evilheroo Its time for the Turk to open their eyes to the world and should not claim Tanbur as theirs. Tanbur has no meaning neither in Turkish not in Greece language. Its a pure Kurdish instrument. It is made of Tar+ Mur. Tar is string and Mur means sorrow. It has been used by the Yarisnai Kurdish relegion for thousand years. They still use it and consider it a sacred instrument, they don't play it, if they don't kiss it in advance.
@evilheroo@evilheroo Its time for the Turk to open their eyes to the world and should not claim Tanbur as theirs. Tanbur has no meaning neither in Turkish not in Greece language. it's time for you to open yours too... we turks never had and never will have problems to be proud of the cultural richness we gathered alongside our journey from the chinese to europe.
the word "tambur" is according to the common turkish dictionary of arabic origin. although there is a probability that arabs who dominated persians for decades could have adopted it at some point the instrument does not have persian (and neither kurdish) origin at all: sumer/akkad/assyrian!
@minzblatt Well, as I mentioned in my previous email, Arab never had Tanbur and I have never seen any document to claim that Arab had Tanbur. The word has no meaning in Turkish either. Also the instrument is used by Yezidi, Yarisani, Alawai Kurds, to sing their sacred songs. You seems to be proud of cluture, that's fine with me, but the instrument you are using is pure Kurdish, I hope you do not add that you are "rich culture".
"This instrument (Tanbura) appeared for the first time in the Sumerian civilization in 2700BC.Then it moved through the Arab Peninsula to the Pharaohs and then, through the Nubians, to Africa, where it assumed a strong position among other instruments. Furthermore, other smaller or larger forms of it emerged."
"[...]There is a clear African trait in this instrument. The tanbura is played in a genre that takes the name of the instrument called a fann at-tanbura or sometimes the nuban. This latter name confirms the African provenance as the language used is Swahili and the topics deal with many memories of the time of the African colonies. The musical forms of the tanbura follow the scientific classification called funun of traditional healing.[...]"
The tanbūra is a bowl lyre of the Middle East and East Africa which takes its name from the Persian Tanbur via the Arabic tunbur (طنبور), though this term refers to long-necked lutes. The instrument plays an important role in Zār rituals. The instrument probably originated in Upper Egypt and the Sudan and is used in the Fann At-Tanbura in the Persian Gulf Arab states.
The Persian name spread widely, eventually taking in Long-necked lutes used in Central Asia such as the Dombura...
"...and the classical Turkish tambur as well as the Kurdish tembûr. Until the early twentieth century, the names chambar and jumbush were applied to instruments in northern Iraq. In India the name was applied to the tambura, a fretless drone lute."
So there is just a brand "tanbur" however pronounced and been written... only that is persian (!!!NOT KURDISH!!!) - the instruments, especially my turkish tambur with your bağlama/saz-formed tembur, have nothing else in common.
For further information please use wikipedia or other common encyclopaedias you have access to and stop bothering other people with such childish blabbering. If you like our (turkish) music, just relax and listen - if not, dont hestitate to upload your music on the internet and listen to them yourself. I will not interfere! I swear! :)))
when we were in the middle of the asia we didint know who greek or byzantine was??but we do play this enstrumants and music...is it so hard to understand?how many books are u reading in your life?pls read and use your brain..dont be jealous!!oooo maybe Cemil Bey was a greek..wasnt it? :DDD
Bringing childish nationalism to bear on music is deeply pathetic.Music itself knows not from where it comesand does not represent anything other than itself.Making claims like Turkish music is the best etc is both redundant and silly. How does one measure the greatness of a piece of music in relation to another?Having said that this is indeed a wonderful piece from a very important composer.
Half turkish music comes from Byzantine Greek the same goes to the flamenco,Byzantine was the strongest relation to the ancient greek music.Tanburi is great the same goes to mesut his son
Please don't post misinformation, there's enough of that floating around the internet. Zacharias was indeed a Greek composer in Istanbul, living in the early to mid-18th century. However, Tanburi Cemil Bey lived about 150 years later, 1873-1916, he was a Turkish composer and virtuoso who recorded extensively on wax cylinders in the early 20th century.
Tanburi C/Jemil Bey was with no doubt one of the best musicians in Turkiye during the last century , may GOD bless his soul , Turkish music is the best music in the whole world , who don't believe my opinion pls ask a real musicians .
