Just got a Dell XPS 15z for $1100 including tax (student discount + free XBox deal). 1080p 300 nit screen, all metal body, back-lit keyboard, USB 3.0, Sandy Bridge, NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M 1GB, less than an inch thick! Macbook Pro ripoff? Yes, at less than half the price!
@vstolyarov123 How are you liking the 15Z? Is it really 1080p? I qualify for the student deal and would like to know how you got it so cheaply...sounds really good!
I just use Linux Mint to do all my inappropriate web browsing and save 1,000 dollars... I mean really if you just bought a mac for porn that would be really dumb . Just like Mac both Linux , and BSD don't need anti-virus software. There are over 700 Linux distributions , and 6 BSD distributions. Real GEEKS use Linux , and BSD .
@maw88ify lol....i assure you i did not spend 1200 just to browse adult videos haha...regarding Linux, for me it has been on and off over the years. Still not mature enough (even the latest) for the average consumer. Perhaps I'm not as geeky as you are lol, but it's just plain annoying (and time consuming) to tinker with an operating system and learning a crap load of commands to do or install simple things. I used to play around with it more when I was younger and had more time
I run a business that involves some programming, a lot of photo editing, accounting, research..Bought a Mac and sold it three weeks later. The fact that you have to do two clicks to paste into a window drives me nuts. OS X font smoothing is the worst I've ever seen, it is worse than Windows, Linux or even Symbian 3^. I could not see fine print at all on my 1080p monitor. I have two windows open side by side most of the time, no windows snap feature drove me out of my mind. 2Up App is a joke.
@vstolyarov123 the snap feature in Windows 7 I miss dearly as well. It's kind of interesting seeing how 2 companies take on an operating system. Definitely some things that I'm still trying to get used to in mac os x. Not sure about the font smoothing, I thought it was suppose to be better on a mac (steve jobs is anal over beautiful fonts?). Overall though (hardware and software), Apple definitely has a better emphasis on aesthetics imo
@markyzhang I though I would go blind because of OS X font smoothing. I googled for the problem and found that many people were having the same issue. OS X tries to make the fonts on the screen appear as close as possible to the same fonts when they are printed on paper (Mac's publishing days legacy). Windows and Linux care less for how accurate the fonts appear in favor of sharper, more readable appearance. As a result, Windows and Linux fonts look a lot sharper on LCD screens.
As soon as you get really familiar with MAC you will totally forget all about Windows, watch and see my friend. :) Can't wait to see you "manhandle" it, lol
Congrats haha. I've been considering getting a Macbook Pro for college but I'm worried all the other computer science kids will shun me lol. When you said that as a geek it doesn't make sense to have never owned a Mac you really convinced me.
@poooop83 I'm glad haha. Funny how I was actually in computer science in my freshman year (I'm awful at it, and transfered to business later on), back then...mac wasn't as popular yet and it was all about thinkpads running linux haha. You can dual boot ubuntu on a mac, can you not?
Best of luck in college...gonna be the best 4-5 years of your life. I guarantee it.
@JustteDotCom I believe you can dual boot ubuntu, and you can definitely install windows 7 and boot into that using bootcamp so I can essentially be covered on all fronts haha. And thank you for the kind words =]
