Using a good antivirus, firewall and maintaining a healthy running system will reduce a lot of odds of getting virus', I have used vista and with it's flaws it definitely did have again I can't say I got a virus on it. I might be in the lucky "few" who manage their systems well, but hey that's just my opinion.
@JohnThomas777 Furthermore, I can say that it is possible to get virus' on mac as far and few between as it ever occurs, if it runs a kernel it can get a virus tbh, anything with programming can have malicious code executed on it. it's more an attempt at reducing the likely hood of it happening and I must say by default Leopard does a good job at that, it's just with Windows systems you don't get a lot of that protection as part of the package.

Also the reason Macs are less susceptible to viruses is because it is UNIX based, meaning it's very hard for files to transfer to other files, aka a virus, it would have to be a hardware virus, such as a Rootkit to be effective

A virus is a program that duplicates itself or plants other harmfull programs inside other files, so it wouldn't work due to it's UNIX base, however, a worm sits there in a single file, causing damage to that file.

The unix platform is not a simple transition, nor would it be wise to ditch an already lucrative market with a huge user base to capture 10 percent of a market worth less if you could very well capture 10 percent of a higher base market. There is no viable option to switch currently.

In a normal business, you could get fired for ballsing this up; in the world of the spammer (especially in Russia and China), the penalty for failure is prison or even worse. All things considered (and the low market-share is one of them, for sure) I'd bet that OSX remains virus-free.

I've had a mac for 12 years. I've used macs for 18 years. I use the Internet heavily. And have never gotten a virus. I don't bother to have virus protection any more. I love life. I love my mac. They have only gotten better over the years.

where are you pulling this from? Windows patches dozens of holes on a daily basis. it took a researcher months to find a couple on the mac. Not really, in many Universities in the UK, they use Windows and Linux purely because of the software required for research. I don't think I have seen a mac in many Universities.

BTW vista actually performs just as fast in gaming at as XP. It wasn;t Vista's fault, it was crappy drivers from nVIDIA and ATi. The driver problems have been fixed, and things are going smoothly. Make sure you DL SP1, and all is well. I'm actually getting better FPS onmy Vista Ultimate 64-bit then I was with XP.
Don't lie Matt. I have 2 identical spec iMacs, one with XP SP3, one with Vista SP1. Latest drivers all around. Portal gets 32fps in XP and 27.5fps in Vista. But it's mostly down to the memory usage difference; Vista uses a lot more ram than XP.

Crapple has to resort to hype and misleading ads (Mac Air) to push its products. Just because your computer looks good next to your kitchen faucet doesn't mean it is worth your hard earned money. How about a computer that does what you want it to do (PC) and not what Apple wants it to do. Can't find one reason to buy Crapple, I had the offer to get 25% off and it still wasn't a good value compared to a PC.
If only a Mac could play Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Vice City, Unreal Tournament 2004 and Mine Sweeper. I then would perhaps switch to a Mac. I have used a PC and Windows since I began using a GUI operating system on a home computer. Windows is all I use and know. Anyhow, Windows Vista SUCKS ASS and I have no plans in upgrading from Windows XP Pro. ;-)

The unix platform is not a simple transition, nor would it be wise to ditch an already lucrative market with a huge user base to capture 10 percent of a market worth less if you could very well capture 10 percent of a higher base market. There is no viable option to switch currently.

@DarkPrynce The fact is that even those lab-based 'viruses' for OSX that were trumpeted a few years ago came to nothing; these routines simply can't execute and profligate on UNIX in the same way as they can on Windows. Yet.
More than 9/10 OSX users are running the latest version of the OS too, which is another defining characteristic, along with the relatively small pool of hardware to batten-down. Believe me, I think most OSes are miraculous these days, but OSX is simply more secure now.

Problem is that even though one would think a hacker might take that thought *id be the first ever to spread a virus* most probably don't. Opt for the much easier to create windows flavor of it and sit back and get info they where looking for. When mac starts to be sent out on netbooks in bum fuck Egypt or third world country's it will then have become main stream enough.

@DarkPrynce I agree that any system can be hacked, but for the numbers to add up for the malware criminals, they have to be sure that the back-end will pay off after bandwidth and server fees have been burned up. In a normal business, you could get fired for ballsing this up; in the world of the spammer (especially in Russia and China), the penalty for failure is prison or even worse. All things considered (and the low market-share is one of them, for sure) I'd bet that OSX remains virus-free.

where are you pulling this from? Windows patches dozens of holes on a daily basis. it took a researcher months to find a couple on the mac. The fact that there hasn't been a single virus (besides the one that runs on PIRATED iwork software) for mac is amazing. The Wall Street Journal even commented on the security of mac. WHICH CORE IS UNIX which is a more solid base than windows. Redesigned from 2000 while windows has the same foundation since 95

I HAD an ipod and traded for a zune once I wanted more than music in my mp3 player. Yah I considered the ipod touch for awhile, but paying an extra 80 bucks for 22 less gigs of space and youtube videos didn't quite please me. So sorry I'm not jealous and I'm still happy with my decision.

BTW vista actually performs just as fast in gaming at as XP. It wasn;t Vista's fault, it was crappy drivers from nVIDIA and ATi. The driver problems have been fixed, and things are going smoothly. Make sure you DL SP1, and all is well. I'm actually getting better FPS onmy Vista Ultimate 64-bit then I was with XP.

Don't lie Matt. I have 2 identical spec iMacs, one with XP SP3, one with Vista SP1. Latest drivers all around. Portal gets 32fps in XP and 27.5fps in Vista. But it's mostly down to the memory usage difference; Vista uses a lot more ram than XP.

Crapple has to resort to hype and misleading ads (Mac Air) to push its products. Just because your computer looks good next to your kitchen faucet doesn't mean it is worth your hard earned money. How about a computer that does what you want it to do (PC) and not what Apple wants it to do. Can't find one reason to buy Crapple, I had the offer to get 25% off and it still wasn't a good value compared to a PC.

If only a Mac could play Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Vice City, Unreal Tournament 2004 and Mine Sweeper. I then would perhaps switch to a Mac. I have used a PC and Windows since I began using a GUI operating system on a home computer. Windows is all I use and know. Anyhow, Windows Vista SUCKS ASS and I have no plans in upgrading from Windows XP Pro. ;-)
