  • There no the full movie?

  • After I got through the book, I went online to see what the general opinons were and then I noticed that there is a MOVIE based on it! I quickly logged on to YouTube and looked for it, so here I am.. I admit, I couldn't watch this. I paused it right after I heard "Mama died today". I started to remember my own interpretation of Meursaults last visit to his mothers retirement-home, were he avoided to see her one last time. I don't want to spoil my personal perspective.

  • this looks awful

  • i think what camus was really trying to portray was the struggle to hold true to the belief of meaningless. Were constantly told the correct way to live. Were taught morals. Were trained animals as Freud would say, but Meursault does still struggle with what he believes. the hot sun represents his angst of his mothers death. The arab nurse at the begginning, where he refuses to see his mother one last time is why he shot the arab later. He feels guilty but tries to deny it.

  • where can i find the whole video??

  • He seems much older than I ever imagined Meursault.

  • book report....DONE

  • It's weird, even though Meursault is so sensitive to the sun in L'etranger, I never imagined him to be really sweaty and getting his hankerchief out every five minutes!

  • Acting is not reading. Therefore the telling of the authors is not the dialogue, my dear, is the body language. To transmit emotions in acting is so difficult that is why music guide the emotions of the spectator glancing on the action.anyhow, for people like you who seems to me being an determinist of the language of acting, Mastroiani is just performing a character, perhaps not the one you imagine in Camus's novel...There is freeom within...

  • Hi is the whole movie posted ? if so how can i watch it in order ? numbered ?

    thank you

  • @Alienvessel Yes, but this is not the first of the series. Look for 'Luchino Visconti's The Stranger ....Complete Movie Part 1 of 11.'

  • is it a nice film?the book is my favourite book so far, camus is awesome

  • Meursault was not arrogant, but believers of god, christians, want to impute that charactor on him because he refuses to accept god or jesus. This is typical way a christian sees a nonbeliever. In Meursault's case, he not only is uncompromising with the justice system regarding irreligiosity, he is genuinely angered because the priest wouldn't let him die in peace. This is what is clearly unacceptable to them, isn't it?

  • @dickson0007 i dont see a nonbeliever that way sure i dont agree with some of the things nonbelievers do but im not gonna say im any better than anyone else on this earth im not because there is no such thing as perfect people im not perfect in all honesty i struggle sometimes i dont like to refer to myself as a christian im in the best relationship of my life.Ive lost a lot in this life but i will never lose that. I dont believe in religon i wont judge you its wrong to judge

  • @animenut23 Mary of Nasreth thus spoketh to me: "Pitiful woman am I. Eight seasons hath passed, still mine betroth neigh laid finger on mine breast even. Sire, judge me not, but will thee consumate mine womanhood?" Thence the semetic vigin lifteth her garment and bendeth over. "Behold mine pudenda, will thee not lust mine beauty, this moment?" Thoroughly then I humiliateth her as many as cometh more in her virgin mouth. She exclaimath thus: "Extatic am I, blessed are thee." Judged her not I.

  • @dickson0007 what does that mean? i dont mean that question to sound rude

  • @animenut23 I saw some contradictions in your previous post. One that stands out is that your started off as someone addressing the non-believers, who are also non-religous. But then you conclude that you are not religious. You think by merely distancing yourself from the term 'religious' makes someone more credible? What is the relationship you are talking about? Christianity is not a religion?

  • To me the book is okay, I sometimes think that people read too much into these things and that even Camus would not have derived half of these notions about his own story.

  • I'm almost finished with this book.

  • so lame

  • @888edward888

its nt lame, read a book

  • @12theory ok plz expleiin this classic to me, its a frustarted writer whioo cant express himself so he tries to frusterate the readers

  • @888edward888

this book is surreal, albert camus is surreal writer.. it is a fiction but it can be "real" thats wat classic about its "real" showing irony esp stranger is nihilistic. its deep

main char Meursault gets accused of killling Arab where he didnt have intention to kill "because of bright sunlight"... which ppl never believed.. eventually lead him to execution... how he acted "careless" in his mother's funeral etc, that "coincident" gets all connected and put to blame on Meursault.

  • @12theory what is unjust? he was convicted due to the murder. there is no bckgroud given to the main character. y doesnt he care about his mom? is it because he isnt close to any, mayb hes depressed.? or maybe he has no love or hate in him, which could be good. or maybe hes just a clueless spoilt child, commenting about a society of to which he does participate in, which would make him just another stubborn idiot.

  • @888edward888

wow u gotta read harder son... wat u mean "why does he care about his mom.."... wow man.. it starts off with his mom's funeral right, and he didn mourn about it, because he didn't met his mother for a long time,,, then the public saw him as a heartless bastard which wasnt true.. that alone was one of the reason that he faced death penalty..

think this, if somebody handed u a gun, and u accidently shot him without any intension, and u will be facing death penalty.harsh? i think so

  • @12theory i meant to write; why doesnt he care about his mom. he got penalty cause he commited murder. whats unjust there. its quite a uselss idea , the author just wantas attetion

  • @888edward888

he didn say he didnt care watsoever, he juss didn find it "sad" cuz she was old, natural death and he was away from his mother for a long time.. idk man lol i think he didn really had any special relationships with his mother in his childhood..

he got penalty not only he committed murder, but because he blamed the sunlight which ppl thought it was absurd. i think if he rlly feel remorse and shut the hell up like the lawyer told him to do, he wouldnt be facing death penalty..

  • @12theory there must b a better way to discuss a novel online

  • @888edward888

cant u see this unjust, heartless results... explains clearly and realistically without putting any fancy fictional background.. in a way its meant to frustrate the reader.. cuz its unjust..

  • Pure masterpiece! Thanks for uploading it!

  • One person doesn't like strangers.

  • this is great

  • this is boring

  • im not sure about this. i was imagining it totally differently. i think the cast look wrong. but i guess that's just me.

  • Where can I watch the whole thing? I have to write an essay on the book.

  • the movie doesnt reflect the existential themes so well

  • It seems like this scene was taken directly from the book. The dialogue is almost completely identical. Also, I find it odd how they refer to the seniors as "Inmates"

  • It seems like this scene was taken directly from the book. The dialogue is almost completely identical

  • how did you get the english version? how do I find it pacifically in english?

  • thx for upload

  • Albert Camus is the best writer of century XX

  • @nothingness36 in a simple term THE UNIVERSE DOES NOT CARE and that is the absurdness of life.

  • Don't you people understand? The reason why Meursault is the way he is because he does not follow society. He is the absurd hero. At the end Meursault realizes that the only thing certainty to human existence is death. And thus he feels content that he is an outsider to society, he embraces the cold indifference of the universe for they both do not pass judgement nor do they order or control the events of human existence. This man was just living with out hope or illusions. I admire him.

  • @AlexSmash100 Hi, you seem to understand the book far better than I did! I have to write a paper on the book’s themes, purpose, and style, I was wondering if you could help me out? Also, is Meursault his first or last name, I kind of got lost in that part. You don't have to answer if you don't want to, it would just be a big help for me.

  • @ipwnkthnx ok the central theme of the book is Alienation. If you want to impress your teacher i recomnmend that you compare the Stranger with Albert Camus the Myth of Sisyphus, which is the title of the book but with the book just read the essay titled the myth of sisyphus, its short. The reason why is because they both give perception of the"absurdness of life".

  • Thanks a lot!

  • fucking awesome

  • meh, the book was way better

  • the actor makes it seem like he has an internal struggle, which bothers me. I feel Meursault would almost come across as arrogant with his indifference. He should almost seem rude to the people that speak to him. As though he doesnt care whether they are standing there or not.

  • @matttheknife this

  • @matttheknife I think that Mersault would be hard character to play as his callousness is not something that most people can grasp.

He's not entirely rude anyway, only when people annoy him.

  • I always thought Meursault was a guy with a personality/brain defect more than a feeling of superiority (like in Crime & Punishment). So his internal struggle would be about "Why does the rest of humanity not think like me?" because he honestly is confused.

  • @matttheknife Actually everybody has a little o Meursault inside yourself. At some point of our lifes I've felt the world's indifference, making us be indifferent too. Camus could manifest this feelling in such a way that everybody can realize and put yourself on Meursault's shoes. Each page from this book sounds like a punch in the face of the society...

  • @matttheknife The whole book is about his internal struggle... He doesn't give a shit cuz he's too focused on his own bull poop.

  • @matttheknife not really, camus didn't convey him as being rude or arrogant

  • please do you have a download link!

  • @wandawilcox , me too it's camus' best i think

  • The book was great, now I need to find the movie.

  • albert camus je t'aime...and mastroianni too

  • I liked the book but the movie doesn't seem that good...

  • Where can I watch the whole movie and not just the first part?

  • Where can I watch the whole movie and not just the first part?

  • This is probably my favorite book.

  • @CobaltIsNotReal are you depressed?

  • @GorterPoss

No, I enjoy life. I just like what this book has to say. It's something I've never come across.

  • @CobaltIsNotReal I find if I don't keep busy with visceral experiences I get depressed. I fear one day I'll turn to drug abuse but hopefully not.

  • Personally, the actor that plays Mersault was in 81/2 and he's a great actor however I imagine this film adaptation in black and white as opposed to colour.

I wish I could hear it in its original language rather than dubbed too. :/

    Subbed would be better tbh.

  • The book was truly amazing, but I agree with some in saying that it shouldn't have been made into a movie! There are so many things in my imagination which can be ruined by a film adaptation- Meursault's and Marie's relationship- I don't think it's humanly possible to show the lack of emotion between them and how the whole thing is based on the physical aspect. Camus created it to work on the imagination- many bits in the book can be taken so many ways and that's the beauty of the book!

  • you say all this but you begin by saying that nobody should ruin your personal interpretation... are you not capable of experiencing more than one viewpoint? If your imagination is ruined by other veiwpoints then indeed Camus and Satre were both right! and there is no point to anything! Carry on!

  • What the hell is this shit????

  • How could anyone even THINK of turning The Stranger into a movie?? The Stranger couldn't possibly work as a film. It's absurd!

  • this is crap

  • 4:57 Wasn't it five? Ah no matter, details. :)

  • It was 5.

I maintain that they should have kept the "Maman died today" translation, rather than "Mama died today".

  • I imagined Meursault in a totally different way.

  • I always imagined Meursault as Camus but not Camus at the same time. Seeing it in film makes it something 'concrete' which isn't very appealing.

  • Muito bom!

  • it would be a better scene if there were no monologues..

  • Great book ! :)

  • I'm studying this book at school too! We've been looking for a film of it for ages! lol Is this actually from a film? If so where can I find it?! Lol ps great video :P

  • I just called an alternative video store. "The Stranger" is NOT available on DVD/TAPE/etc. This indeed was a real movie. I saw it in cinema in 1968. I think it is much like the book and the director, I read, was very meticulous with replicating the details of the novel's time and place. .

  • Oooh wow!! Thanks that really helped me :) I really wanna see it, we've just finished the book and it was absolutely brilliant, would make an excellent movie! I'll have to keep a look out!

  • Glad you enjoyed it.

  • good video thanks for posting this :) i was studying this book at school the other day

  • Does anybody know where I can find this movie, but with english spoken language, not german?

  • Maman est morte aujourd'hui...

  • amazing book i loved every minute

  • could someone define exitentialism for me?

  • @pioli12

A type of philosophy that focuses on emotions, actions, responsibilities and thoughts. It focuses on things like the meaning of life, or taking responsibility for your own life.

  • No it's not, that's a misconception. In fact camus and satre (the modern father of existentialism) used to be friends but had a falling apart and dislike each other. They never could comprehend how their philosophies could be connected. Camus' philosophy is absurdism.

  • Comment removed

  • the philosophy this book is after is existentialism

  • Although it is very difficult to make a film adaptation of Camus' The Outsider/The Stranger (due to lack of movement in the plot and the narrative), this film is indeed well made. Most of things from the original work are kept intact, which is not the right approach for an adapted film but for this Albert Camus masterpiece. It is by far the best book I've read so far.

  • my favorite book!

  • I'm reading 'The Stranger' in my classic novals class; translated from the French by Matthew Ward. It's an amazing book. The book is way better, as i'm sure everyone who has read the book can agree. If someone was to remake this into a movie worth watching, i think its impact on the world would be significant. It would be easy to say that some heads would roll from this, as much as they did from 'Passion of the Christ'

  • yeah but i think we should just keep all great books books. its much more influential this way. when a great novel with lots of meaning is turned into a movie the meaning you take away may be lost, because this way the writer of the movie and directer and even the actors could force there own interpretaion of the story on people. i think books like this should be left to those who will actually read.

  • Guys, is this not The Outsider by Albert Camus? I have two copies of this book, one recently bought and one from the 70's, both are called 'The Outsider', and both start with the words 'Mother died today'

I thought the stranger was an entirely different book, however anything I find on here about 'The Stranger' seems to talk about what I know of 'The Outsider'

  • I have just found my answer. In French, étranger can mean: foreign, unknown, extraneous, outsider, stranger, alien, unconnected, and irrelevant. This explains why my copies are called 'The Outsider', the title has just been translated differently, is this just an English translation, as opposed to an American English translation? If anyone could answer, it would be much appreciated.

  • Right on, "The Outsider" is the apparent "UK English" translation, whilst "The Stranger" is more the "American English" translation. Saying that, I just believe that they're two different translations which surfaced in different markets.

  • they're one and the same. no diffrence except translation of the title from french.

  • "The Stranger" couldn't possibly work as movie. I can't imagine even watching this.

  • this is crazy! the book is great but i wish they would remake this film so it could be watchable

  • This is one of my favorite Camus' literary works.

  • Wow. You have this movie. That's amazing. You probably own the only English copy in existence. Finding the original Italian one is pretty easy but the English one is a ghost. I see you already said you're intending to post the rest of the movie shortly, so I thank you in advance.

  • Please post the rest of the movie! I can't wait to see it! Thanks!

  • THIS IS MY FAVORITE BOOK!!! I LOVE IT!!

  • Thanks, I hope you do. I've always wanted to see this movie. I've read the book four times.

  • I will post the whole movie on the YouTube by the end of this week (hopefully). I hope you guys will enjoy it as much as I do.

  • Did you have a chance to post the whole movie? I would like to use it in my political theory class but alas can't seem to find a copy anywhere.

  • what politics are using from the stranger?

its a philosophical book if anything. Tisn't it though?

  • thanks so much. this film is nowhere to be found. please post some more. jai lu l'etranger qd jetais encor jeune, et puis i wrote many papers on camus when i grew up. jai lu presque toute son oeuvre litteraire, sa philosophie me prendra plus de temps. anyway, thanks so much.

  • the book is great, i havent seen this film but it seems great

  • nice work. the book and the film are great. i love it because the whole story differs that much from those I've read before

please put the rest on the film also on youtube.

in march i will graduate. i also have to write an interpretation of this book in french. we also watched the film in class. en francais naturellement^^

  • Milu after searching for it myself for years I got lucky on ebay.

  • You are welcome stratosl. It took a while for me to find a copy of the movie. I was overjoyed when I finally got my hands on the copy.

  • May I ask where you got a copy of the full film?! I've spent AGES looking for one. Cheers in advance.

  • Thanks for posting!! It's very rare! It's a pity this film isn't available in DVD

  • kubrick + the stranger = masterpiece

  • When I saw the Headline for this I thought that there was no way that anybody could make a movie about the stranger that could properly credit Camus for his work. I must admit to be proven wrong, it looks really good. Is there any way to get a hold of this film??

  • You are talking about Anna Karina who plays Marie in the movie. Over the weekend I'll upload the scene with her in it. I just posted the opening so everyone could see how close it is to the book.

  • I've been wanting to see this film again for many years. And to see a girl in a red and white striped dress, who was in it. Who was that?

  • Yeah, I've wanted to see this one for ages, the clip was tantalizing. Too bad Anna Karina didn't make an appearance, but it was still good. Too bad there's endless legal wrangling over who owns the rights, otherwise Criterion could have released a DVD by now.

  • Awesome! Thank you for this post - I absolutely loved it.
