@Pablotheawesomeguy Lang, definitely. Portnoy is a landmark drummer within the progressive scene, and he definitely has his own place in it's evolution, but he doesn't do so well outside of his own box. Lang is a much more versatile drummer.
But regardless, Portnoy is still one my drum heroes!

Exactly, ChaosDrummer23. You've hit the nail squarely on the head. Playing the stuff is only half the battle. Coming up with the stuff in the first place....now there lies the talent. The only guy I've seen so far on YouTube who can both play Mike's stuff AND apply his style to other songs (I mean SuperMario, for Chrissake! - or even his Tenacious D video) is VADrum (Andrea Vadrucci)
Mike is the man. 12 consecutive Modern Drummer awards in the Progressive Rock category says it all.
He missed the most important part (for me), and it was bugging me for YEARS! I finally came to SOME conclusion.
It's a bar of 5/4 and a bar of 13/16, and then the band comes in on 1 in different tempo.

no lie, it really is not that complicated, of corse its not perfect but its easier then you think. The only part i had extreme trouble with was the ending when Mike stops the beat, continues with the bass peddle and then does the three snare. that was a complicated patern

Exactly, ChaosDrummer23. You've hit the nail squarely on the head. Playing the stuff is only half the battle. Coming up with the stuff in the first place....now there lies the talent. The only guy I've seen so far on YouTube who can both play Mike's stuff AND apply his style to other songs (I mean SuperMario, for Chrissake! - or even his Tenacious D video) is VADrum (Andrea Vadrucci)
Mike is the man. 12 consecutive Modern Drummer awards in the Progressive Rock category says it all.
