Not trolling or anything but can't you just use smooth follow on the main character to get him to follow you??

well yes and no, you could do that but it would just run into things and be stopped constantly, this AI walks around things and (apparently) finds the shortest way to get to the person, hence smart AI

Did you use "waypoint" as a back bone or is it all tracking. I'm working on one that use's waypoint to sound. So if the player is creeping around thinking the AI is stupid the AI robot well hear em and attack/ chase out side of the waypoints and range
