i coudn't be happier searching rodney crowell on youtube. i know he's not in here but i found this video in the suggestions and ho-ly shit. this is very cool.
@collins320 I'd be interested in seeing it. I guess Matchbox is more of a blues based shuffle, thus the reason Clapton is probably a little more at ease. One thing though: he can't play rockabilly to save his life. Far too blues based, and not really a 'fun' player; by that I mean he's far too serious.
Still can't believe that three (3) people did not like this video. It is a must see DVD and a great collection of musicians. Long live Rockabilly...the Stray Cats tried to get it going but didn't seem to catch on then...maybe now is the time !
George Harrison and Dave Edmunds look like they're having an absolute ball! Love the sound Geroge is getting from that 1957 Gretsch 6120. Poor old Eric Clapton looks right out of his depth - not comfortable with what he's playing, and a bit intimidated by the style of music he's playing. He looks a bit lost...
@FlamingTrashInc I agree about Clapton, he doesn't have the charm and depth of his friend George, poor thing. As you say, George and Dave Edmunds get along like a house on fire and Carl Perkins absolutely loves George. It's fabulous to see George basking in the love and approval and to hear his voice - also fabuous and so strong. He was made to sing rockabilly, I think. I haven't seen him this happy since the early Beatles when he took a solo on Til There Was You - on a similar guitar?
if Carl Perkins didn't thing George was a talented musician, he certainly wouldn't have invited him. there are lots of musicians out there who'd love to play with a legend, but George clearly is proven yet again to be something special. He may not be he most skilled, fancy guitarist ever, but that's not what matters in rock n roll- it's about fitting the song and singing and playing with feeling.
Many, many Thanks for posting this, don't believe we will ever see the likes of this group again...I watch these over and over again seems I never get tired of them, but boy how I wish I had been there...
hahaha watching George turn his head back to Clapton with those eyes as if saying "this is exciting! isn't this exciting? i'm excited!" and Clapton's just smiling and nodding...
@moproducer: did it ever occur to you that Roseanne is there because Carl wanted her there? If it's good enough for Carl, it sure as hell is good enough for any of us. The reason this special is so great was because it's with hand picked friends of Carl's. And she's hardly there for her name...pandering to a "name" HA. You really think the producers needed Roseanne Cash there for her name? You got freaking George Harrison and Eric Clapton sitting here. Hysterical.
You could see the unbridled joy on George's face and demeanor throughout this special. I've never seen him as animated before -- ever. There's no secret how much he worshipped Carl so this must have been just glorious for him.
The best--- Thats all I can say just the very best -never again will this world see and hear the likes of them. Thank You for posting I sure hope it stays here for ever
@flatpicker9972 "Glad All Over" written in 1957 by Aaron Schroeder, Roy Bennett & Sid Tepper. First recorded by Carl Perkins in 1957, and he also sung the song in the movie Jamboree.
@mistersnaredrum Well...while we're there, why not add Sha-Na-NA. Brian Setzer, etc., etc., etc. I don't really understand what Roseanne Cash ever did for rockabilly (other than being someone's daughter) , and I sure as heck don't think she's made half the footprint of any single artist seen on this program.
But she's JC's daughter, and that will buy her lunch for the rest of her life, I guess. It helps to be born with a name.
@mistersnaredrum If her being there makes you & George happy, it's completely worth it. But the only reason she's there is that she's the daughter of a rockabilly star. Sorry, I'm not thrilled when an event like this panders to a "name". I guess my sense of fairness says it belongs to the people who brought it here and those who nurtured it along.
Besides, I wouldn't open a window to hear Roseanne Cash sing Ave Maria. Overpaid, underworked, half the talent & twice the fat of her peers.
for all those people out there that said the Beatles really couldnt play their instruments,,,,watch George Harrison here and learn from the master...his licks are tasty and sweeeeet!
@NonStopRocker .....i thought it was well established that the beatles could play and better than probs anyone, i never heard anyone say they coul'nt play....... this is brilliant
@NonStopRocker Yeah, it always troubled me that people actually said that about The Beatles. There nut's. How did that come about? Beatles could play the heck out of their instruments. Happy New Year.
I think both sides are right. None of the Beatles could boast a tremendous amount of technical skill on their instruments, but they played riffs that made musical sense and were within their ability.
Carl Perkins (Vocals, Guitar), George Harrison (Vocals, Ringo Starr (Vocals, Drums), Eric Clapton (Vocals, Dave Edmunds (Vocals, Geraint Watkins (Piano), Mickey Gee (Guitar), David Charles (Drums), John David (Bass), Rosanne Cash (Vocals), Slim Jim Phantom (Drums), Lee Rocker (Double Bass), Earl Slick (Guitar), Greg Perkins (Bass) :-)
Looks like Ringo was air drums. Give the man a drum, people!
George looks as happy as could be. None of that reserved, 'quiet Beatle' stuff here. My earliest memory was seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan in 1964. I was 4. Love their early stuff, and the old rock&roll covers they did. That's the music they made their name with in Hamburg and at the Cavern Club.
I could not have explained it any better. I saw george looking, watching with the admiration in his eyes. Complete respect and awe. you really nailed it with your explanation
Well put, Beatlesgirl1980. This sure makes you feel Glad all over. I remember it so well when this show was first aired on TV here in Sweden back in the summer of ´86. It was everybody forgetting about their star egos and indulging in the pure joy of music. The high point of the show, IMO, was Carl Perkins and Rosanne Cash singin Jackson.
Great shit, Carls voice always reminded me of an old black dude blues singer. Nobody can sing the blues like them old African american guys, but Carl is pretty great...all the musicians up there are great
