  • this scene and that great ending scene in the Chinese opium den from Once Upon a Time in America are pretty bloody impressive for one man to do in a career!

  • This is me everytime I check into a filthy motel. The music starts up and everything.

  • gives me goosebumps every time i watch this scene.

  • The film is well known for the Russian roulette scene, but for many reasons that have already been said by other people this for me is the best scene of the film.Using no dialogue, such a powerful moving piece of film with great music

  • One of the most suggestive, and powerfull scens in any movie. Being alone, afraid, guilty, and such loss, LOL!

    one ex seal

  • so, he had always been in love with meryl's character???

  • the most moving scene in a movie ever, the character the song the situation unbelievable very moving touching simply the best!

  • yes! its my fav scene too! thanks for the upload..

  • This just shows how great an actor DeNiro is. Without any lines of dialogue he can convey an entire lifetime of pain in one scene flat. Good stuff, brilliant movie.

  • subtle genius

  • Best scene in my opinion.

  • ^_^

  • beautiful, and sad..

  • My favorite scene too

  • This scene conveys a lot without a word being spoken. One of the best on film.

  • This is, fictionalized, what I was like every time I came home. I'd always find a place to spend the night before I surfaced. I don't think anyone understood my need to do this. And I was just a photographer. Think of those that aren't allowed or supposed to. Soldiers for instance. Keeping it strong.

  • So intimate and beautiful. Passionate, unbearable, delicate and powerful. This small scene is some of the most exquisite tragety I have ever seen on film. Its devastatingly lovely. I'm blown away.

  • such a moving scene, plus the great guitar by john williams playing cavatina. powerfull stuff

  • This scene could have been shot by David Lean, another master of filming, or even John Ford. Michael Cimino knows very well which are the classical sources to create a masterpiece

  • We love De Niro because of scenes like tis. What has this man been doing in the last years? What abaout those wonderfull movies in the 70's, I mean, "Taxi Driver", "The Deer Hunter", "Godfather part II", "Raging bull"? Why didn't he keep the quality in their last works? The only director who understands the way he act, the only director who makes him fly is Martin Scorsese.

  • He is a producer now and also has his film fest etc. Meryl said herself that Bob went into doing that and is busy, and still very involved in film.

  • Michael (RD) is feeling accountable for Nick (CW) and may not know how to tell Linda (MS) that Nick is probably either dead or if still alive has his piece of mind shattered.

  • Michael was an amazing character, the true tough man, he became a green beret and his cool headedness in war and hunting deer made him the role model of what men can be, disciplined and non gossiping. His weakness, of course, was a woman, his best friends girlfriend, though she seemed to have as much love for michael as nicky, it was complicated as shown in the wedding scenes.

This scene was fantastic because it showed the "man" being frail, hurt, and traumatized, something not expected...

  • thank you for your thoughts. very interesting, very true. de niro is a great actor becaus he can can play these sort of "tough" roles and show such vulnerability in them with small little things. he can convey heartbreak like nobody else I can think of.

  • I watched "Deer Hunter" in Taiwan back in 1979. Have to say this scene is the most paralyzing moment of my entire movie watching life.

  • Great music. The scene could have a clown slipping on banana skins and the audience would still be crying.

  • secretbint, you the master of hyperbole, I laughed, but deniro did a nice job.,

  • Good one! I almost pissed myself from laughing... That made my day...

  • Glad to know I am making a difference to the world.

  • how is tht funny its a good scene but not funny

  • When I first saw this film, I hadn't thought it had been making much of an impact on me; but then this scene came along. So powerful and eloquent.

  • Not a word spoken but a Blockbuster scene, Sometimes silence is golden

  • great scene

  • I never understood this scene completely until just now. Tomorrow I go home for the first time since coming back from Iraq, to South-Western Pennsylvania in the Mon Valley, and like the character here, I wish I could just slip in quietly, rent a car and roll along 837 and go hide out in a cheap motel somewhere in the Mon Valley.

    Peace everybody.

    -R.V.W.

  • CAVATINA. a beautiful song..

  • well to the prison break dude

it's not his wife, it's his best friends wife, the best friend he left behind in veitnam ...

  • you missed the last few seconds..when deniro walks out..the dark and light split screen. the best cinematography ever.

  • co to jako m byt dit to umi kazdej jezisi omg ste z toho pokadeny ale nevim proc..

  • suberb scene, this is how De Niro's myth stays in our memories

  • A splendid movie!

Perfect casting~ Meryl Streep was brilliant in this movie. Some of today's so called actresses should could take a lesson watching her flawless performance!

  • this movie is #79 in the AFI's list of greatest american movies of all time. I'm watching all the movies of the list online, here:

    blogger-films.blogspot.*com

  • massively agree! only a few actors could capture a camera without saying anything like he does here. his silence speaks volumes about the torment he carries inside... expertly directed and executed!

  • Eh. Now I get it

  • Is DeNiro uncomfortable cause hes nervous or is it cause of the guilt?

  • This music and the acting conveying someone who looks the same but will never be the same. Moving and brilliant

  • love deniro, merilyn so much in this movie and it is one of my best movie collection. fall so deep with the ending theme cavatina... :-)

  • Deer Hunter doesn't get as much attention these days as Platoon or Apocalypse Now or Private Ryan or even Metal Jacket and I'm not sure why. It's just as good as Platoon, which I think is the best war movie of all time. Is it b/c of the length? The lack of action? The depressing ending? The fact that the director flipped out later? Maybe it's b/c the story doesn't take place only in war-related, military environments. Also, it could be that the R. Roulette scene overshadowed the movie itself.

  • The scene that has the most meaning and truly expresses the emotion of being a Vietnam Veteran (for me anyway)is when Michael is hiding behind the sign across the street from the trailer (his home coming party),not wanting to come out until everyone is gone. That is exactly how I felt when I came home and I still have to hide the fact that I'm a Vietnam Veteran (thanks America).

    DanNang 1968.

  • Watched this film last night on youtube..& what cabn i say??..one of the best films made with such heartbreaking performance from De Niro.shows what happens with true Love & when a friendship is torn.have to say the part where Nick' spits at Mike is just out of this world!.shows what happens in a real freindship.greta movie of all time in my opnion.

  • To live in fear is the worse thing of all....with the economy and the status of our country it can, well, 'pop' up.....please remeber this and absolutely brillaitn this scene is...its divine

  • One of my all time favorite movies

  • excelente momento de la película, obra maestra del cine.

  • man i really need to see this movie

  • very intense movie and message, seen it several times

  • Yo I seen this movie yesterday for the first time and was floored...forget the choppy 1970's cinemotography...the meaning and poetic sense of the movie is timeless...I will never forget this flick as long as I live..one shot...one shot!

  • what a truly powerful scene... the wonderful music flowing in the background is able to truly open up deniro's character and show the viewers his vulnerabilities and his inability to release his emotions due to the stress and duress he is under as the leader of his friends... lost love is the hardest love of all to get over

  • Yeah, what he said.

  • @torquio this scene makes Raging Bull look like child's play!! Deer Hunter is Deniro's best performance movie ever or by any actor alive. The range of subtle emotions he displayed in this movie is mind blasting!! what an actor, too bad hes in little fockers now.

  • Perhaps Deniro's greatest scene and that's saying something. He never utters a word, yet this scene can bring you to tears

  • very well stated. this scene rips my guts out every time I see it.

  • Could you post what happens right after this?

  • Why do people love Robert DeNiro

    This is why

    Hes the man

Compare this to our president who laughs at our troops in the field, or Bill Clinton, that guy never seems sincere

RIP Pat, we will always love you man!

  • such a sad movie

  • mon film prefere , mes acteurs preferes : de niro walken streep ...

  • The greatest movie ever made. at least to me, it is.

  • that is why you are hatemiser.

  • I love the music..The type of music where you listen in the hotel lobby to relax..

  • I was struck here by the fact that Michael couldn't seem to find his tears, even when he was alone... he had assumed the leadership role among his friends his whole life, and also bore the burden of what they experienced in the war... this makes this simple, understated scene all the more devastating, powerful & truthful to the character.

  • you're the best robert!

  • This is what Lee Strasberg from the Actors Studio taught as a "Private Moment" scene

  • yes

  • I was very young when I first thought that there's no actress like Meryl Streep and still do think so.Like she has multiple personalities and call out different ones whenever a role needs it.That is what I admire. This movie was so amazingly naked in putting the characters to struggle with little hope of ever recovering.Thank you very much for sharing it.

  • great scene. such a sad movie but they were good friends. yes, nam was f***** up.

  • He came back all jacked up NAM was !@#$ up Robert De Niro is the BEST!!!

  • Sorry this is something they don't teach you at acting school I'm sure. That's why Deniro is one of the best actors like Brando, Duvall, Pacino, Hackman.

  • walken, too!

  • i think he avoided the party due to guilt, and a total detachment to the world he left behind, excep for linda... i also think it's amazing that a scene in a 30 yr old movie where a man does nothing but walk around a room for 2 minutes still has people talking! so good!!!

  • this is my favorite scene for sure. Mike doesn't go to the party because he feels guilty about Nick and also about what he's seen and done. He doesn't view himself as heroic. Deniro perfectly captures the anguish and pain of the character. And the music is perfect. 5/5

  • I think Michael avoided the party because he may have felt guilty about coming home without Nick. He knew what Nick was involved in but was powerless to stop it. He needed his privacy and "alone" time.

  • So why didn't he want to go to the big welcome home party they had for him?

  • poor little fredo (stosh) john cazales last film.

  • what ever happened to John Cazales?

  • died of cancer the same year of film junior

  • john cazale was a good actor

    strong performances

RIP, Bro, thanx for thememories and the viewing pleasures

  • in the beginning steven's wife lookas at herself in the mirror like she seems ot be pregant... after the wedding steven tells nicky that he never made it with his wife before.. pretty fucked up, one of the greatest movies of all time.. so true all fo it

  • This film is one of the greatest!

The opening scenes showing the moutain town in Pennyslvania, the local community and the wedding sets the film up brilliantly.

Always makes me sad when I hear this music.

It sums the waste that this war was all about.

  • Saw this movie a few days ago on the Encore channal and I have to say that it is now one of my favorite movies. I stayed up from 1:30am to 4:40am watching the whole thing. The whole cast was perfect for this movie. Meryl was my favorite.

  • this is one of the best scenes from the film (maybe not my favourite but it is damn memorable) and amazing how such an amazing, affective, effective scene can be conveyed with no words. this is among my ten top films.

  • On a more realistic note: RANGERS do NOT have facial hair. Not during WWII, not during Viet Nam....never have RANGERS been permitted to grow facial hair.

  • Wrong choice of words - one would die for such a man is what I meant to say.

  • I am still so in love with Deniro's character in this movie - one would kill for such a man.

  • love love Robert Deniro Standly Myers "Catania"

  • WENISIMO ESE TEMA DE JHON WILLIAMS

  • el tema es de Stanley Myers

John Williams tal vez realizo arreglos o la interpreto no sé

  • Thanks for this.I specifically wanted this to be here.

I was pleasantly surprised. You are attuned to what makes a great movie a GREAT movie. The not so famous scenes like this. That become more potent with time.Respect.

Anyone for the bath-scene in Serpico ?

    haha.Great

  • This is also one of my favorite scenes from one of the most acclaimed movies in American cinema history. I recently added "The Deerhunter" to my DVD collection and will say with strong conviction that one of the reasons this scene is so moving and so silently powerful is due in part to the savvy combination of beautifully performed music and Robert DeNiro. No other actor could have pulled off this scene with such pain and compassion.

  • and not forgetting streep's performance.

  • absolutely agreed

  • One of my favorite scenes of the movie as well. I'm really glad this scene was posted. It's a "quiet scene" that speaks volumes. I agree with "unquietmagnolia".

  • brilliant to portray intense return experience just visually(+music) -- for most combat veterans it probably does go unverbalized for a lifetime

  • Why is he in pain?

  • Two words-Survivor's guilt.

  • Brilliant acting - brilliant music. Thank you.

  • I agree with the others - best scene in the movie and one of my favorites of all time. Robert De Niro is a natural and taps into the emotions of a returning veteran with such dignity. Thanks for posting.

  • esta es una escena muy especial que solo lo pueden entender "combats veterans", for the rest of people...hard to understand....dificil que lo entiendan...vietnam fue una trajedia!!!

  • I think all vets who'd came out to the Civilian world has a moment like Bobby in the scene. Homecoming is always stressful to the vet because he finally realize that civilians do have lives also and the vet feels out of place. The vet might feel overwhelm by all the display of thanks and glad you're back small talk. Many soldiers feel that they might not be deserveing of such credit by his friends/family (which they always should).

  • I know...I'd felt that way after ETSing out of Active in 1996. I'd stayed in a hotel room for a weekend coming home. I wasn't as controled at De Nero. I'll admit, I'd cried. Why? I was a survivor of Desert Storm, had not contacted any of my buddies at home, haven't spoken to my family since Desert Storm. I'd felt guilty coming home without any explaination of not contacting them.

  • I connect with this scene on so many levels.

  • This is briliant acting ,man .

    Realy tough to do .

Just concentrate on his timing and everything .

One of the best acters in history .

  • The best scene of the film. Touching with the Williams music

  • absolutely agreed...I felt this scene'd have taken somthing out of Robert De Niro and his acting, way more than generally known 'russian roulette' scene.

  • anyone knows why De Niro hasn't repeat acting like this in the last years? With scenes like this he became a monster

  • most beatilful soundtrack ever! cavatina:D

  • I found this scene to be very powerfull and moving !

  • being a viet nam vet-this really impressed me-but DeNiro always does!

  • one shot, one shot

  • I love this scene about this movie. It sounds in the mind.

  • thats what its all about..ft.cambell 60's..

  • Impressive scene, surely, with soundtrack! Thanks for posting...

  • I don't understand what is impressive here. He is sitting in a chair... But of course.. I never saw the film.
