How can this be new when in 1986-7 I visited a disco club in Athens Greece called (Prison) and when the music started this laser started doing this exact type of thing!!! it wrote the name prison in the center of the dance floor about 10 feet high in the air and was spinning it around for at least 30 seconds!!! and it was doing similar things for the rest of the night. I haven't seen it again after that, and I heard that the Greek law prohibited lasers in the clubs.

it is a new technology! In a disco you got a lot of smoke that make the whole laser visible.

This new one focuses the beam in a certein point of the space exciting the oxygen, or the gas present in that region, in order to create a light emission in a specific wavelenght (color). Changing material and frequency you could try to obtain differnt colors, but honestly it is hard to achieve. But it is a great idea

Humorous to me that the images they projected are the exact same animations used when this technology was developed right here in the US. The innovation is in using a linear motor to move a lens up and down very rapidly above the laser emitter. Most lasers focus slightly inward, this moves the focal point up and down, allowing the "hot spot" to be adjusted on the fly. Then you simply ramp up the power until the air ignites into plasma. Over a thousand degrees and very noisy, but it sure is cool.
