@mirkodelmedico è solo uno stile diverso da quello che usano solitamente, e perdipiù sono convinto che questo pezzo nasconda una discreta complessità... non dovresti liquidarlo così
@alexbarcena This doesn't sound like disco at all. If you want a more progressive band moving heavily into disco territory, check out ELO's "Discovery" or "I Wouldn't Wanna Be Like You" by the Alan Parsons Project.
And excuse me if I'm costing myself any credibility, but there are some disco tunes that are very well done. Almost as many as ones that totally suck.
gentle giant and king crimson definitely made progressive (rock and metal) what it is today without them dream theater, opeth and numerous other may have never existed. And when a band can pull away from itself and experiment most of the time it ends up being epic.......prime example with this song
Some may find this cut at least a bit catchy. Civilian's misstep wasn't its genre, but its lack of distinction -- there have certainly been less virtuosic bands, as The Beatles, whose oeuvre is unforgettable. Civilian, though technically clean, simply doesn't give us GG's creative best, which, as I recall, a band member or two has admitted. To "NFLed": No snobbery, then, is needed to regard Giant's other albums (e.g., TF, O, IAGH, FH and TPATG) as essential to the collection, unlike Civilian.
I guess I'm part of the prog snob crowd (although I don't slam yes, king crimson, or even genesis for what they want to do) because this song doesn't do much of anything for me as it's just a straight rocker (for a straight rocker it isn't anything close to the good stuff of Zeppelin etc.). I'm a huge GG fan for dozens of years up through The Missing Piece but not Giant for a Day. I'll try other Civilian stuff, though, in case I'm missing something decent.
Did you find it? This song, honestly enough, is not the genius Gentle Giant most of us revel at. It's not a bad song, it's sung properly (the voice is there) and played in a competent manner. But to say it sounds like Gentle Giant...
This song proves that Gentle Giant could play any kind of style they wanted. This is one of their heavier songs and Gary Green does a fantastic job on the guitar. Looks like they Gary, Kerry & former drummer Malcom Mortimore are back under the sugestive name "Three Friends". No Shulman brothers on this new ensemble, but is good to know that at least part of the Giant has awakened from a very long sleep. Long live the Giant !
Absolutely true on all counts! I'm going to be trying to post some other missing Giant tracks soon, I think. There are so many others that should be here.
I started with tracks from "Civilian" because I think this album gets nowhere near enough respect from the "prog snob" community. They're the same people who are busy slamming Yes, King Crimson and everyone else for daring to try and become a little more accessible while still making great music.
You're right ! Civilian is probably the most unknown album from GG but as all other albuns it has great songs. I only have it on LP and never found it on CD. It was a pleasent surprise to see it uploaded on Youtube and in special "All through the night", my favorite song from this album. I have all the studio albuns from GG and I might colaborate with you uploading their material as soon as I get more familiar with Youtube.
This song is great!!!! What a fantastic and underrated album!!
I used to listen to it while going to my dreadful job as a senior system engineer...just as a consolation for not being as stupid as most of my coworkers... but, anyway, "it never gets nowhere"!!!

Sorry, what I meant to ask was: did you find anything "decent" in this album? I'm going to try another one.
