man i started playing this game when i was in 2nd grade so i woulda been 7 years old when i started playing mmos hah.. probably why i cant play mmos anymore because nothing can come close to DAoC in terms of RVR or PVP whatever u want to call it.
This game is pretty dead. I was the only one in Dartmoor the other day. I went to Brimstone and I was the only one there, too. Player base is disappearing fast. PvE is virtually abandoned. There is some RvR. Strangely, Cathal Valley is very populated. A little over a year ago Cathal Valley was completely dead. The player base in this game is now hyper-focused on RvR. The ones in RvR have been doing it for a long time and are ruthlessly intolerant of noobs. DAoC was a great, once upon a time.

The back street boys were popular, they are shit, so what idiots play is meaningless. Dark age of Camelot is the pioneer of massive PvP. The pioneer of realm vs realm, or faction vs faction PvP. Not only that there are over 30 classes all extremly balanced, which is a huge feat in itself. Awesome PvE and beautiful fluff. It is godlike.

RuneScape is the best it can get. Behind the graphics (fuck the graphics) is absolutely ASTONISHING quests, VERY high popularity (100k+ people at any time) and is completely playable in f2p.
But if you want a good game apart from RS then wait for Guild Wars 2.

@BritishExtremeMetal you will have a hotkey to enter combat mode, and you can also put spells/ melee attacks (depending on your class) on your 1-0 hotbar.
I regret it soooo much that i wasnt born a few years earlier so i could have experienced this game in its prime. Its all dead now and it seems the real pvp mmo has died. I think i can conclude this after the rift and swtor failure.
@Alex25025 Rift was good while it was populated but its population started declining 2-4 months after release so servers are fairly underpopulated at lower level areas.
DAoC is back ! since the clust on US servers, there are lots of players in here, and after many years trying lots of MMO, im glad to be back on the best one.

@MrBlace22 There are only US servers now called "Ywain" (from 1 to 10) but you can switch between those servers, everyone play together now, and there is looooots of players in there :D and if you reactivate your old account you have 14 days free, so you can see if you still love the game or not ^^

Argain private server, exact replica of classic/SI mordred.. truthfully best server i have ever played on. player base is probably at like 300, 100 ppl is cap till next week it's 1000 player cap with an amazing host.

I downloaded the game this past Friday and played it for the first time in years. ( I left sometime after ToA.. came back briefly in Catacombs.) I'd have to say that I was surprised at the work they've maintained. I'm doing my old necro/buff bot combo and am enjoying it. By the way the keeps are changing hands, there is still a very active RvR community.
Heh, read many comments from players that laughed at the fact that our host created a caster and then he fights mobs in melee... Well, in DAOC until you're level 10 or so, until you get some useful spells, you kinda do a better job fighting in melee range with your staff. Sounds a bit dumb, but then again, PVE is not exactly one of the strengths of this game.
Glad to see that there aren't many haters here, like usual. And I know exactly why... this game used to have a soul.
Mythic made a mistake when they created Warhammer Online :P ... it should have been Dark Age of Camelot II ... or Golden Age of Camelot. Warhammer Online was bad. Or at least I didn't like it much.
Thinking of reopening my DAOC account. The thrill of a successfully performed Perforate Artery with my Shadowblade is far superior than the thrill of playing any class in any game I've been playing since I quit DAOC.
First of all Reviewer is completely incompetent . He rolls a caster and is running around in Melee.
Second This game is still hands down the best MMO out. Sure the GFX are a lil dated but they fit the game. The games content is far and above most, and the PvP is surpassed by NONE. I took a 5 year break played 25+ MMO's and came back for the PvP. They have dumbed down alot of the things to help the WoW generation and the game still rocks.

I miss this game so much, I wish they would redo the graphics to match other mmo's and start advertising more. This MMO is something that needs to be copied, all the customization, not just 2h and 1h/shield weapons that are everywhere nowadays, you had special skills that could only be used with a certain type of weapon and the RvR was amazing only thing close is warhammer
Wouldnt it be amazing if they remade this game...Keeping all the features the same? Then again alot of players wouldnt like it cuz it was alot more Hardcore than most games now days....But far more rewarding.

@VikingRage7 Nor will they ever will I believe...so much customization and everything...One thing i enjoyed was stuff like weapon dmg, from thrust to crush to slash....you never see specific dmg types any more...or stat caps or anything to customize a template...it was something great to work towards....not to mention the Realm ranks....Getting realm rank 12 was a true accomplishment and enemey players could see your actual name...you really stuck out at RR12 :P
One of my favorite games of all time. I used to play all the time with my friends back when it was released. I quit right before Catacombs and moved on to WoW, as many people did. It's so strange seeing how much the game has changed. I think I may go play a private server for old time's sake.

You can play this game on freeshards now, (free). One particular has a large population (Uthgard) and carries more of the classic feel of the game before all the expansions. You do have to deal with a lower lvling rate, but you don't have to worry about all the tricks and tools now needed to play on live.
@slipknot1915 No. It used to be the second most popular MMORPG. Until Mythic royally fucked it up. Then instead of cleaning up their mess they moved on and made singleplayer casual focused WoW clones. WoW ruined the genre.
@LordxHypnos Fixing the game would be a good solution, and Mythic WAS working on a big fix, but EA basically had all the DAoC devs move to WAR to try to save that, and SWTOR to try to save that mess.
@Kron -- Yeah, I played DAoC, from launch till the release of ToA, then a little bit after the Classic Servers (Those without ToA massive gamebreaking additions). I always played Midgard mainly with a Valewalker or two on the side for fun-sies. I had a hunter who was RR7-2 or something, a skald and thane both around RR5 or 6. As for WoW being FPS like, I just said the PvP followed similar game types and overall had a very FPS feel to it, fast paced, quick joined, where one person made a huge dif
Dark Age of Camelot doesn't have better PvP then WoW because the two have insanely different PvP. WoW PvP is more like a FPS, with game modes that emulate Domination, Capture The Flag, etc. It's much more twitch-gameplay, with strategy being useful but not necessary.
DAoC focused on huge large scale battles, with three factions instead of two, which made for a lot of cool gameplay options and never a dull moment. Only problem is getting people to PLAY in those battlegrounds or RvR areas
@NateProject Have you ever actually played daoc? lol.. Your response doesn't make much sense.. people are always playing in NF.. ALWAYS.. and some bgs arent populated because for the past 9 years people have been playing in the same ones.. thid 20-24 and molvik 35-39.. cathal is newer but some people play there its 45-49. Also it's not all about large scale battles though some people just zerg.. solo, small man, and 8v8 are my favorites and you can usually find action if you know where to go.
I don't suck at strategy and tactics; I think I made my limitations clear. DAoC, and probably WoW also, offers little to those who can use strategy and tactics, and much to those who are twitchy and have a good connection (interruption of spells is a good example)
DAoC did not take the time to prevent StunGard. Repeatable area effect stuns? Does not take a lot of thought on that subject to realize there would be some problems. Any time they took to perfect the game, we all paid for
While I agree that DAoC PvP is better than WoW, I am going to offer a different perspective.
I'm not twitchy, but I work hard at playing. I used to play Quake, the original 1st person shooter, where winning is 2 things: knowing the map, & being twitchy. But even with crap reflexes & a slow connection, I could beat about 1/2 the players that would come into games, just through tactics. I played DAoC for years, and if I ever killed anyone in RvR, it was an assist or some other accident. Best PvP?
I use to play WoW back when i was far younger :) im 15 now and daoc helped me through so much family issues and stuff. Like when my mom and dad where argueing I would just go play daoc and chillout :) Im downloading the free trial now and hopefully going to get back in to it :) i would love to see the playerbase come back alive :)

the way the character move when u press for example the the left-click mouse button forward on the map is called an animation. so not only is mmo's about animations. all games are about animations. if there was no animation it would be a "fukn" picture but maybe thats what u would prefere to be staring into?

MMORPGs are not about graphics you graphic whore, they're about gameplay. It's not like your gonna see crysis 2 graphics, for example ; There's multiple players playing, meaning that you will have to load the detail of other players too, thus causing lag. Dark Age PVP is FAR superior to World of Warcrafts PVP but Mythic, the company that made DAOC has no idea how to run an MMO and destroyed their own game. Also DAOC had no quests to speak off, you just grind mobs for 50 levels. No thanks.

First of all Reviewer is completely incompetent . He rolls a caster and is running around in Melee.
Second This game is still hands down the best MMO out. Sure the GFX are a lil dated but they fit the game. The games content is far and above most, and the PvP is surpassed by NONE. I took a 5 year break played 25+ MMO's and came back for the PvP. They have dumbed down alot of the things to help the WoW generation and the game still rocks.

I miss this game so much, I wish they would redo the graphics to match other mmo's and start advertising more. This MMO is something that needs to be copied, all the customization, not just 2h and 1h/shield weapons that are everywhere nowadays, you had special skills that could only be used with a certain type of weapon and the RvR was amazing only thing close is warhammer

Wouldnt it be amazing if they remade this game...Keeping all the features the same? Then again alot of players wouldnt like it cuz it was alot more Hardcore than most games now days....But far more rewarding.

@VikingRage7 Nor will they ever will I believe...so much customization and everything...One thing i enjoyed was stuff like weapon dmg, from thrust to crush to slash....you never see specific dmg types any more...or stat caps or anything to customize a template...it was something great to work towards....not to mention the Realm ranks....Getting realm rank 12 was a true accomplishment and enemey players could see your actual name...you really stuck out at RR12 :P

One of my favorite games of all time. I used to play all the time with my friends back when it was released. I quit right before Catacombs and moved on to WoW, as many people did. It's so strange seeing how much the game has changed. I think I may go play a private server for old time's sake.

I find it hilarious how not only did I play this game exceptionally well for a 12-year-old but I still remember so many things about the game itself. Nothing makes me feel better than nostalgiaing(lol) about the great times I had playing DAoC

The gameplay has changed since then of course, but I still love the first couple years that I played it. You can play this game on freeshards now, (free). One particular has a large population (Uthgard) and carries more of the classic feel of the game before all the expansions. You do have to deal with a lower lvling rate, but you don't have to worry about all the tricks and tools now needed to play on live.

@slipknot1915 No. It used to be the second most popular MMORPG. Until Mythic royally fucked it up. Then instead of cleaning up their mess they moved on and made singleplayer casual focused WoW clones. WoW ruined the genre.

@LordxHypnos Fixing the game would be a good solution, and Mythic WAS working on a big fix, but EA basically had all the DAoC devs move to WAR to try to save that, and SWTOR to try to save that mess.

@Kron -- Yeah, I played DAoC, from launch till the release of ToA, then a little bit after the Classic Servers (Those without ToA massive gamebreaking additions). I always played Midgard mainly with a Valewalker or two on the side for fun-sies. I had a hunter who was RR7-2 or something, a skald and thane both around RR5 or 6. As for WoW being FPS like, I just said the PvP followed similar game types and overall had a very FPS feel to it, fast paced, quick joined, where one person made a huge dif

Dark Age of Camelot doesn't have better PvP then WoW because the two have insanely different PvP. WoW PvP is more like a FPS, with game modes that emulate Domination, Capture The Flag, etc. It's much more twitch-gameplay, with strategy being useful but not necessary.
DAoC focused on huge large scale battles, with three factions instead of two, which made for a lot of cool gameplay options and never a dull moment. Only problem is getting people to PLAY in those battlegrounds or RvR areas

@NateProject Have you ever actually played daoc? lol.. Your response doesn't make much sense.. people are always playing in NF.. ALWAYS.. and some bgs arent populated because for the past 9 years people have been playing in the same ones.. thid 20-24 and molvik 35-39.. cathal is newer but some people play there its 45-49. Also it's not all about large scale battles though some people just zerg.. solo, small man, and 8v8 are my favorites and you can usually find action if you know where to go.

I don't suck at strategy and tactics; I think I made my limitations clear. DAoC, and probably WoW also, offers little to those who can use strategy and tactics, and much to those who are twitchy and have a good connection (interruption of spells is a good example)
DAoC did not take the time to prevent StunGard. Repeatable area effect stuns? Does not take a lot of thought on that subject to realize there would be some problems. Any time they took to perfect the game, we all paid for

While I agree that DAoC PvP is better than WoW, I am going to offer a different perspective.
I'm not twitchy, but I work hard at playing. I used to play Quake, the original 1st person shooter, where winning is 2 things: knowing the map, & being twitchy. But even with crap reflexes & a slow connection, I could beat about 1/2 the players that would come into games, just through tactics. I played DAoC for years, and if I ever killed anyone in RvR, it was an assist or some other accident. Best PvP?

I use to play WoW back when i was far younger :) im 15 now and daoc helped me through so much family issues and stuff. Like when my mom and dad where argueing I would just go play daoc and chillout :) Im downloading the free trial now and hopefully going to get back in to it :) i would love to see the playerbase come back alive :)

the way the character move when u press for example the the left-click mouse button forward on the map is called an animation. so not only is mmo's about animations. all games are about animations. if there was no animation it would be a "fukn" picture but maybe thats what u would prefere to be staring into?

@Mbluum I'm sorry for saying that, you probably don't know what these things are, and what I meant was (if you even know this o.o) that I agree with rebelpy. MMORPGs are not about graphics you graphic whore, they're about gameplay. It's not like your gonna see crysis 2 graphics, for example ; There's multiple players playing, meaning that you will have to load the detail of other players too, thus causing lag. There, I said it - If you want me to dumb it down for you, just PM me.

do i have to repeat myself? u have to look at the same character doing the same movements for hours and hours. for some reason theres not a single mmo who wanna make your character run fast so instead u have to sit for like 20min every time u need to go somewhere and the only thing to do while u are waiting is looking at an animation the makers didnt bother to use any time on.

Dark Age PVP is FAR superior to World of Warcrafts PVP but Mythic, the company that made DAOC has no idea how to run an MMO and destroyed their own game. Also DAOC had no quests to speak off, you just grind mobs for 50 levels. No thanks.

Well of course the playerbase is dwindling. It's an ancient pay to play game! Ultima Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Everquest, etc. would highly benefit from being made free to play, considering most of their player base is in free private servers anyways. Dumbasses.

By the way if you want, you can make the graphics look better if you force AA into the game, search google for "Dark-Age-of-Camelot-Quick-Easy-Steps-to-Greatly-Improve-Visual-Quality" and it will pop up as first search result.
I would also recommend that you explore instead of doing quest.. Mobs give great exp so explore and kill :P
