@phoenixhasrisen: I had a rat that did the exact same thing. Took him to my vet. He did have pneumonia, the vet also did an x-ray.... If you never had pneumonia with a rat, I guess you are the inexperienced person.
Pneumionia is more common than a bunch of lung tomors. It's really sad your rat had to die like that, and ofcourse, you couldn't have known. Some things just happen all of a sudden... (And rats are great at hiding pain/distress)
I had a rat named Cookie for about 3 years. She had a bite in her ear almost EXACTLY like the one this rat has on his. She suffered the same respiratory infection as the one in this vid too and seeing this is like reliving the time when Cookie became ill
My mom (whom I will never forgive for this) absolutely refused to allow money to be spent on Cookie at the vet. Even just to end her suffering. And why? "Because a $7 rat isn't worth it." NEVER repeat my moms mistake!
It was hard watching this. My poor Po-Po Gigo also died from this disease. After multiple medications, many weeks, & many trips to the vet the vet finally just said we have to make him comfortable. I spent a lot of money & a lot of time on my baby & it was never good enough. I miss him so much.
do they eventually get better with rest cause i have a pet mouse named sucy and shes has difficulty breathing and her eye is red her eyes are supposed to be black
@Harukasaful Mice might be different, but in this case if the medicines didn't have any effect on the rats then there is no getting better. Please take your mouse to the vet.
I know the comment by Trisa72 was 2 years ago, but I wanted to respond to it. How do you know that the poster did not take the rat to the vet and nothing could be done. Mycoplasmosis is so common in rats, it is almost impossible to acquire one from a pet store that does not have it.
This video along with another one is the reason I took my baby rat, Gregory to the vet. He had pneumonia. But he is better now. This video scared me so bad I went to after hours emergency visit for my rat. I did not want him to get this bad. Thanks for posting this.
There are many causes for this kind of breathing. Most of these comments are uneducated guesses, and people should NOT be trying to diagnose on the basis of one symptom. Gasping attacks such as the one in this video usually indicate that the end is near, although I have seen complete recovery in at least one case. It's not possible to say from watching this heart-wrenching video whether this rat has cancer, pneumonia, or a sever respiratory ailment, such as an advanced mycoplasmal infection.
My rat looked like this today. After just a few hours, & AT THE VET, she died. A necropsy showed she had tumors in the chest cavity that were pressing on her lungs but didn't show outside the normal body silhouette.
Don't listen to "it's pneumonia" or "you should have taken the rat to the vet earlier". These are inexperienced and insensitive comments.
My rat only displayed these symptoms for a few hours before dying. And she was NOT sick or in distress yesterday.
That's classic pneumonia, open mouthed gasping because they are literally drowning in fluid. Hopefully he/she saw a vet and got treatment, or was euthanised humanely (guessing with the gloves you're not a pet owner).
aw this is what my rat was doing off and only for a week even after he got on baytril... now he is just breathing bad from his nose but still very stressed :( i hope my ben gets better :(
he has a increable lung disease...I just had to have my baby girl put down yesterday bc of the same thing.A very hard thing to do but she isnt suffering anymore. She was gasping for air on and off like yours is doing.
omg i had a rat with respiratory problem too,she had water in her lungs,a weak heart and made noises while breathing.but she was able to get some air and i immediately took her to the vet.
this video makes me sick, because THIS rat was like drowning alive!he just got no air :-(
its good for him if he didnt suffer long.poor rat.
My rat is having that problem right now somebody please tell me weather she will make it can she possibly recover. We might have to put her down using refridgerant. :,(
I have a very sick rat as well, its not breathing like that though but shes chirping when she breaths when i brought her to the vet they gave her meds but they didnt work she got to the point where she couldnt walk or eat, but i have recovered her feeding her baby food through a syringe and mixed acidophilus.. she is now walking and eatting on her own not so much hard foods but she tries
I recommend giving all your rats Acidophilus even if they arnt sick!
It's called Agonal breathing... happens before death. Taking the rat to a vet at this point seen in the video would probably cause it more stress and very likely the rat would be DOA. Vet care should of happened when the resp. infection first started.
My poor girl started breathing like that suddenly. She had a tumor that ruptured, I couldn't afford the vet bill to remove it. I bandaged her up and did my best, but it didn't heal. I was scheduling an appointment to have her put to sleep, but she passed away last night :'(
My god, that is extreme respiratory problems. Poor guy. R.I.P
It should have never gotten to that stage though. Judging that you are handling the rat with gloves, I am assuming you are a feeder breeder? And thus, do not really care very much about the rats health. They are strictly a comodity to snake people. If am wrong, please tell me otherwise.
I didn't say anything to hhe contrary did I? Please enlighten me. The animal IS suffering, and it deserves as much care as any other rat. Why did you think otherwise?
Sorry if I sounded like I am a snake person, I am not I was meant to say "and thus, YOU do not care very much about the rats health" I am a ratty person.
both my rats Brownie & Spinx were doing this before they died this morning :( I am so worried about my other girls and one boy because if it was myco.. it is contagious to other rats...
@xxangelictonesxx Don't worry about the others. :) Pretty much all rats have Myco anyway, it just stays dormant. They almost definately all had it from birth.
@JamHe39 Well I know but stress brings it out which causes the puemonia and my other rats did catch it, I lost another one last sunday he was breathing exactly the same as the little guy in the video..mine was only 2 months old. Now all my girls are sneezy and one is very congested and the other boy is also congested
my rat died last night after breathing heavily, he lived a long happy life though and died being stroked behind his ears by my mother ( he loved that ) poor baby.
Every rat we have picked up a pet store has been wheezy. We get medicine and it usually clears up in a couple of weeks. The rats we have gotten from the Humane Society were/are very healthy.
Your little rattie looked to be end-stage with mycoplasma pneumonia... i'm not sure that even enrofloxacin (Baytril) would have helped at this point, and sometimes rats don't manifest symptoms early... you held this little one and showed love and warmth and caring... and your little one was not alone...
you were there with this one... rest in peace, little one...
Oh lord, if it was just an infection, they did not need to be put down! Vets are rather bad about rats, unfortunately, and you should always, ALWAYS, get a second opinion on them.
Its like putting down a kid cause they have the cold!
@MyassWins IT depends on how far along it is though, she could have had another infection coming on, ahe could of been hurting when she breathed. whatever the reason i'm sure shes happily eating all things our ratties can't have :P up in rattie heaven
stupid people its MYCOPLASMA. a respitory infection that never goes away. it can happen in 5 min. and sometimes go away just as fast. you can help it by giving Ornacycline in the water bottle. it is a bird over the counter medicine.

That's myco for sure, I can tell by the way it is breathing. I just had one of mine die like that and it was horrible. Baytril did not work for him, because he was too old and he had been treated a few times.
I'm not so sure that this is myco - it could be a very extreme case, but imho, I'd say that the wrong type of food has been given to him and he's choking. Rats have no reflux action, so you have to be very careful on what you feed them.
