The Optigan (portmanteau of "Optical Organ") went extinct in 1976. While they made great sounds, they were prone to breakdowns. Antiques of the Optigan have been used by Tom Waits, Devo and Fiona Apple.

I saw an old 1920's /1930's magazine article (popular Mechanics or similar)
of a vacuum tube organ similar to the Optigan but used glass disks similar to the plastic Optigan disks
