Of the several "Initiation" versions I've heard, I think I like this one the best. Although it seems like some of the introduction was cut off. That's too bad.
@fmradioguy101 - I dunno . . . I've never played with David (and probably won't, unless he sees the light and turns to bluegrass), but I have had the pleasure of playing with Tommy at the Walnut Valley Festival, home of the National Flatpicking Championships as well as the International Fingerstyle Championships. David's great at what he does - but Tommy is a great guitarist. As Chet said, "Certified Guitar Player". David was NOT in the list of four that Chet named. 'Nuff said.
the songs based on a boy going through becoming a man in the worst way and all the noises and things he thinks in his journey. Its like a old indian tribe thing when they go through Initiation and the child becomes a man over time with challenges that he must face and tthe fears and animals he will face. Its truley an inspiring song.
I'm gonna see him in Toronto on May 14, so excited it's my first concert of any kind ever.
I've never really cared for going to concerts in general but this video swayed me on its own, so I looked up his website and bam it turned out he was playing my city in a week, what a lucky guy I am.
Wonderful song! But...I am doing a presentation about this great man and I don't know where to cut this song :( It's not possible to cut it anywhere... :) but I can't put the whole song to the presentation... HELP MEEEEEEE! :)
this song is soo much better in person, when he sweeps his hand over the sanded face of the guitar, the subwoofer of the theatre rumbles like a 10.0 earthquake. simply incredible.
I was very lucky to see him on Saturday (5th) at Bristol UK and he performed this. All I can say is WOW the sound engulfs you and takes you to another world. I laughed as he turned up his amp and said "god it goes to 11"!!! then afterwards "better turn the amp off DESTROY mode" hahaha
I saw him on the 4th in Southampton. He played it then too, the best rendition I've heard live (from 4). He said he hadn't been playing it much recently, but it was a request. Guess that's why he's digging it again - it's a bit fresher after an absence from his set list
wath a man, My friend stop playing guitarr after seeing and listen to this fantistik man, They found no reaseon to play moore when someone does it like this, goosepimpels over hole body
Funklunk, no you aren't. And Tommy has been do initiation for ten years... because he loves it so much! He hasn't played it the same once... it keeps getting longer, and better!
I've ben personal friends with Tommy for about 8 years, and when I asked him why he didn't play Initiation at his last show I went to, he said he has played it at almost every show for 10 years and is just tired of it. He may play it, but it is unlikely.
I think you will be totally amazed with the show. I saw him in Ottawa last year with a good friend. He played in a church in downtown and the show was awesome. the acoustics of the church were unbelievable! Going again this year in August. Have a great time!
Yea I saw this yesterday in Helsinki too. And, I had seen the Sheltom Auditorium version from like 8-9 years ago. And it was awesome.
But when you saw it in YouTube, it wasn't nothing compared to the 1) version of 2009 and 2) the live. You could feel it. It was spectacular. A masterpiece with no other song anywehre in the world like that! Spectacular!
I'm going to the 18th of April concert in Amsterdam.. i'm PRAYING that he will perform this song. 11 of my friends coming so i really hope he shows of 1 of his masterpieces.
I've wasted 2 minutes of life watching this hack. If I'd paid to be in this crowd I would have wasted money too. To call this amazing is...well amazing. Maybe my eyes deceive me or my speakers are grossly out of phase. All I see is someone that appears to need medical attention and all I hear is electronic noise that could have just as easily been made by monkeys. He is a great guitar player but evidently inhaled a little too much of the lacquer that he beat off the body of his guitar.
There are no big tabs needed. The main theme is just an E minor played like 079987 and D6/E (my opinion of the name) played like 077777. You hold the fingers over the 7th fret and hammer on the 998 out of 777. That´s it :) and a huge echo of course
Tommy is the Best! I don't know if people outside of Australia know the background to the song's base, but it tries to replicate an Aboriginal "dreamtime" atmosphere with their music and the noises of the outback. That's the way I see it. It is so haunting! He does'nt get enough recognition for the genius he is!!!
Yeah wouldn't like this in your nightmares. But the best initiation so far this one. I got the chance to meet Tommy when he came to Ireland for the waltons guitar festival. I went to his workshop in Dublin and I met him there.
yeah, so Floyd :) this is just beyond description when seed being performed live, I had the chance and it was so deep you would never believe. a hundred squared to hundred times better than on the video. And the video is amazing :)
