  • isn't this really stressfull on the machine?

  • can you link me the website plz? thanks

  • Also, rip a DVD using Handbrake while everything else is going on. That will use both the hard disk and the optical drive. :D

  • @akbigdog yeh, play an online game...anything will drain the battery. Games utilise all power draining hardware.

  • i would charge it fully overnight, then play minecraft and do the other things and that will take most 2 hrs, then leave it off so thats not too bad

  • you said 'kay to much!!!!!!

  • you did this on 9/11

  • How do you get the processor thing at the top of the screen

  • Why don't you just charge it overnight and then drain the battery the next day? Lol you don't have to do it all in one day!

  • k?

  • dude, you just need to occasionnally forget to plug the charger, is that worth making a video ??

  • the most stupid video ever!!! how to lose your time!

  • we can read, thanks

  • I calibrated my MacBook Pro (i5) yesterday. I also turned on my iSight camera while draining the battery, in the newer MacBook Pro models turning on the iSight will activate the Nvidia 330m GT GPU which is a huge battery resource hog.

  • hi great vid, but how do you get the macbook pro to sleep if youve set it to never go to sleep? ive got the core dual processers cooling fan going & ive followed all your instructions but how will i get the mac go to sleep if ive set it to never go to sleep.PLEASE HELP ASAP

  • @michelespiritlevel when u set it to never go to sleep, the machine will still go to sleep when it is running on low power to conserve the remaining power left for future usage.

  • mac sucks

  • Now you can just run down the battery by playing Counter Strike or Team Fortress 2.

  • @FrosChannel or export a 720p 14 min video will also do the trick.

  • Question. I didn't drain it in one sitting. I started last night, it got late, I went to sleep. There's a little juice left in my battery this morning. I wanted to resume the process. Is this okay or do I have to drain in one sitting?

  • What is the airport thing for the internet about that you said turn on in the beginning? I know it helps kill your battery but what is it for?

  • after u did this did youre battery last up to 10 hours? i just got a macbook pro the 13 inch one and the battery is suppose to last 10 hours but mine only lasts for like 6 hours. i havent tried doing this. its been 2 days.

  • @AryanAcepilot36 it's projected to last 10 hours. that's if you have the brightness set as dark as you can go with the backlit keyboard lights turned off, with other functions turned off.

  • Check out the app Watts at binarytricks [dot] com

It's very useful to do & schedule battery calibrations on any MacBook

  • As other commenters have mentioned, these tips are a load of poo poo. If you deliberately speed up the process by using as much battery life as you can, then this process is pointless and only serves to add additional usage/wear to the battery.

  • I thought the new batteries didn't need to be calibrated? And isn't it harmful to fully discharge lithium ion batteries?

  • lol, do not follow these instructions ... It won't just discharge the battery, it'll kill the computer if you do this every time you calibrate the battery ...

  • would doing that command make a difference in performance if i were recording on my mac?

  • @bassplayer247 if you were exporting a 14 min 720p video it'll train it pretty fast.

  • you could always watch a bunch of dvds or videos to shorten the time

  • what if your macbook wont sleep for 5 hours after fully discharging? mine eventually powers down before 5 hours is up.

  • Mine wont even discharge all the way even after two days!

  • i don't get it you said that it would kill the battery it really doesn't damage it right?

  • I believe he means by "kill" your battery is that it will just make it run out quickly to hasten the process.

  • what if i had mine for a month and haven't done it is it still worth doing?

  • well yeah and it might kill your fans depending on how old they are

  • i was trying but when i charged it i turned it on

  • you usually do this with these type of batteries they have some type of circuit in them and they control the battery a new type of battery should come soon they are late on making breaking edge technology again :P

  • why do u need 2 do this?

  • IDK battery maintenence

  • it makes the battery read on your desktop more accurate and i guess its good for ur battery and extends its life as well

  • Comment removed

  • its going to take me 7 hours with my MBP

  • lmao ya i have the 17'' and it'll take me 7.5 to 8

    :S

  • Mr. Spock.

  • Instructions on what he just said:

1.power macbook until it is full then keep it plugged in for 2 hours.

2.Unplug your macbook and drain the battery until it shuts off. Let the computer stay shutdown for atleast 6 hours.

3 Plug your computer back in and let it recharge until it is totally full and leave it plugged in after it is full for atleast 1 hr.

(IF YOU DONT WANT TO WATCH THIS WHOLE ENTIRE VIDEO WHICH IS BLABBING MOSTLY THEN COPY AND PASTE MY MESSAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!)

  • The command line is nice but you can save the five hours by powering off the computer after it goes to sleep rather than wait for five hours. This saves more time than the command line which we don't know how to undo.

Also the video is too long for the time it saves and almost as boring as draining the battery.

  • One other thing you could do instead of running this script is play DVD's with the volume turned all the way up, or play a CD in iTunes with the volume turned all the way up, or even spend the time ripping your CD's to iTunes. I hear the cooling fan in your computer speeding up.

  • dude you unpluded your ac adapter the WRONG WAY

  • thx bra

  • so the jist of this process is charge the battery completely, drain the battery, completely, and then charge it back up? haha good video.

  • Does this apply to the Lithium-Ion Polymer batteries in the new unibody MacBook Pros?

  • i would think so

  • if you run videos, or stream from youtube it will drain also

  • Zoom out please, waving the camera around is confusing.

  • Does this work for phones?

  • the reason you leave the macbook alone for after draining the battery is because the battery has reserve power to keep it in sleep for at most 5 hours, giving you time to find a charger. basically what you're doing is forcing it to drain all power, even the reserves. then you recharge it. the battery has to be fully discharged.

  • seems like doing the drain overnight would be prudent, no?

  • how do you get that percentage in the top right showing the average of the two processor core

  • You can just use the machine normally until the battery dies, what is so bad about that?

  • so U can turn Mac off OR allow it to sleep for 5 hours ? Either one ? Is one better than the other ? Is this the same procedure for the iBook G4 ? Thanks. Good Video.

  • hey I found when I ripped a DVD in Handbrake (app to rip dvds) it raised my CPU usage to 100/99% when it got to task 2.

i think this'll take up much more battery than just that command cause its spinnin the dvd the whole time.

  • LOL, Toilet Surfing...

  • when they say, turn off computer, or let sleep for 5 hours. does that mean if i just turn it off, it only needs to be off for maybe 10 minutes, or does that mean, wether its off or in sleep mode, leave it alone for 5 hours?

  • you made this vid on 9/11

    R.I.P

    Good vid

  • Where's the PDF?

  • 5:19 "go to sleep seriously"

  • Hahaha... 8:34 "Do some toilet surfing, you know, bring it in with you. Why not? Everyone does it."

  • I wish Apple would include an auto calibration just as in other laptops in the BIOS menu

  • How do u get to the terminal window where u type in yes > /dev/null?

  • it's located in your utilities folder in applications

  • thanks... but um wouldn't like watching a dvd or two probably kill the battery just as fast?

  • lol go to sleep seriously

  • Whats the URL to get that page about Calibrating your Battery?

  • You don't need to let it sleep for 5 hours do you? You can also just turn it off, this saves...5 hours ^^

  • Unless they meant this:

"Turn off the computer, or allow it to sleep, for five hours or more." (Inserted the two comas)

  • i have a macbook pro and wanted to know, does calibrating the battery about 1 month after getting the macbook still work, or do u have to do it in the first week of getting it?

  • Mr.Spock LOL!

  • where can i get the mini meters on your upper right hand corner you showed?

  • google MenuMeters. its not mini meters :P

  • Since Mac OS X uses BASH, this also works in certain Linux distributions like Ubuntu or Debian.

  • wow...u just taught me soooooo....much, thanx.

  • not all macs on intel are dual core what about the mac mini when it went from g4 to intel it had a core solo

  • I have a question on one of your methods for running down the battery. I'm going to be purchasing a MacBook in the near future, and if I did that to the two processor cores, would that hurt the processor any?

    Thanks

  • No. The only thing that can really hurt a processor is heat, but the SMC fan software that's built into every Mac will automatically power up the cooling fans before the processor would overheat. That's why my laptop was so loud when I was making this video.

  • Well the easiest thing to drain your battery apart from the things you mentioned would be to make it play chess computer Vs. computer... (apple actually suggested it when I got my replacement battery...)

    Cheers

  • Or, you know, you could just watch a movie or play a game. Really, it'll take a little longer, but you don't have to do a ridiculous amount of crap to get to it. If you want to do it fast, do this method. If you have some time to spare, then just watch a movie or something.

  • O_O um thanks' for the tip but i rather keep my brightness to 1 and every thing to low batterie usage :P Every one has their own personal preferences :)

  • u should consider a screenrecorder there are good free ones

  • There aren't really good free ones on the Mac. I think that the best value for money right now comes from Shiny White Box's iShowU. I highly recommend it!

  • Easiest and safest way to do this is simply put in a game, anything like Crysis or Sureme Commander on high settings will push everything to the max.

  • yo i just calibrated my battery and i used coconut battery and before i calibrated i had like 96% current battery capacity and now i have 78%! I need help!

  • how did u put the cpu/proccesor usage/% in the menubar?

    can't figure it out?

  • i think playing a dvd at full brightness will be much easier than doing all the small stuff

  • this seems rather OCD. And it might really fry your computer, even though you have fans (if it's left like this for some time).

  • can you just pump the computer full of drugs? LOL

  • Won't that KILL your whole computer?

  • Thanks for the tip, but I don't think it's that good either for the computer or the battery since this is not normal use of the laptop. besides, this monthly calibrating stuff is crap : it's just used to make you buy another battery :p. Doing it once or twice in the laptop's lifetime is enough.

  • Apple recommends to calibrate your battery once every two months to keep overall battery life as high as possible

  • I would not trust them...since they're selling their batteries... :p

  • lol. nice nice, yeah im def not doing that thanks. batteries are cheaper than a fan/cpu/display/or circuits repair on it. oh wait applecare. still rather not go through wit the hassle. nice vid though.

  • Hey!

Thanks for the yes > /dev/null tip. I did not know about that.
