  • this was, in my opinion, the missed triple crown, he could go 4 turns, literally. what an amazing athlete!

  • I've seen this tons of times and never noticed how crazy the crowd goes at the finish. Who can remember a Preakness where the derby winner loses but the crowd is still ecstatic? AWESOME

  • Ramon made a mistake, hit him too hard. Not by design...just a mistake.

  • @AAndrews1968 You are absolutley correct!!!!! Dominguez actually did a 360 windup to accelerate the whip more...There is no reason at all to do that no wonder the horse ducked out from that..That

had to hurt...I think he raced great he just got beat by a MONSTER

  • What a racehorse!

  • Shame on Dominguez for beating poor Scrappy T. Whipping is one thing, beating them into submission is another. It was pretty apparent that Scrappy Tee stopped running for him. That's what happens when you don't handle a horse properly.

  • The most amazing example of athleticism and determination that I have ever seen exhibited by a racehorse. It's one thing to win with a perfect trip, this is greatness in its truest sense. Remarkable!

  • Afleet Alex was such a nice horse--one of the best horses of recent years, I think. Him and Bernardini. The announcers keep saying how Scrappy T "blew the turn" but damn, Domingez hit that horse a mighty wallop. That's not the horse's fault.

  • AA is a tremendous horse and aside from Secretariat, was the best horse to have raced in the preakness ever. The belmont win, I believe was the second winningest margin next to secretariat also.

  • @bankrollr Actually, Secretariat's son, Risen Star, won the Belmont by 14 lengths. Still, Alex's Belmont was incredible!

  • @DerangedAlibi Easy Goer won it by 8, too. I forget the official winning margin for Alex, but Easy Goer's Belmont was as impressive as any(outside of Secretariat). Plus Easy Goer was beating Sunday Silence by 8. Not to discredit Alex - he was a very good racehorse and probably the most tenacious I've ever seen, - but to keep things in perspective, Alex's crop was diminished by MRLS. Just keeping it real. Alex was talented and game as they come but no all-time great.

  • @MissStarryDay History will prove your opinion of AA wrong. Times aren't everything neither are wins. But, Alex, in this modern era is one of the greatest.

  • If you watch the slow mo between 3:43 and 3:55, you can see that AA took two steps with his left foot. One before the trip and one after. This is called switching his lead, that in itself is what saved Jeremy Rose going down. By switching he pushed his shoulder up and was able to help Rose regain his balance and the rest is history.

  • I was extremely sad when he lost the Kentucky Derby, it was some reward when he defeated Giacomo twice in the second and third legs of the Triple Crown (Giacomo has my dad's bet for all 3 races) he just couldn't pull out the win Derby Day...

  • Watch that colt's right leg when he stumbled. Amazing it didn't snap.

  • Afleet was blocked in the derby, right when he wanted to make his move. He easily could have won the Derby.

  • @2ndsolutions I agree!!! Unfortunately, Jeremy and Alex had to spend much of the race trying to find a safe way to get through the tightly-packed, together field of horses. Alex definitely should have been a winner of the Triple Crown.

  • Amazing! Only word to sum it up.

  • His progeny pretty much prove his DNA was altered in significant and good ways. His life, his racing, his caretaking...everything combined together to make him what he is. His foals are competing well.

  • the women is a CRAZY XD!!

  • To win the Preakness and Belmont the way he did, makes his Derby defeat hard to watch. 8 feet was all that separated him from a Derby victory and dramatic Triple Crown score.

  • To clip heels and almost fall, recover, and win the race like he did is absolutely incredible. Althought he was much the best, a lot of horses would just say "screw it" and not go on. What an incredible athlete and horse he was. Too bad we weren't able to appreciate him until he was retired. He was a great racehorse. But his babies continue to run well.

  • @dinney123 Exactly why they should get him to Zenyatta. I think they could make a special foal.

  • What the hell was Ramon thinking? I've never seen a jock whip a horse left handed rounding the turn like that. See Chris Weber NCAA championship game.

  • ESTUVO MUY BIEN

  • Hey Alex...what a horse you are!!! Good luck to your sons running in the Travers tomorrow...Afleet Express, Admiral Alex and Afleet Again:) Go boys! Do your daddy proud:)

  • what a brilliant little horse he was.

  • HAHAH More like STOLE him for 75K.

  • Oh my GOD!!! I did not even read in the title "overview of near fall" Just Afleet Alex's name. I don't remember this race though I know I probably watched it.

This happened 5 years ago and I jumped out of my seat in fear and made myself dizzy!! LOLOL!

To see a horse go down like that is scary as hell and worse if they do.

  • es impresionante el esfuerzo y tenacidad de afleet Alex"s y lo mejor es cuando supe que las ganancias generadas por este caballo se donaban para dar atencion al los ninos con cancer y para la investigacion de la cura.

  • STILL GONNA WIN!!!!!

  • One of the most incredible things I have ever seen any athlete in any sport do. WOW!!

  • Cool

  • Cannot wait to see what his son Dublin will do in the TC this year. I think he's going in underrated and the extra distance will make him dangerous.

  • 10K to get back 40K, one of my biggest bets ever. It was just unreal!

  • @jrgumpert It sure did feel like a miracle.

  • Amazing horse!

  • this is awesome beautiful race its my favorite

  • Incredible recovery and a great horse. That was an awesome move and ride by Jeremy Rose. I especially loved the part when 1 of the owners screams SOB and then says moments later, he's still gonna win. If you his see his owners reaction you can realize they did not care so much about the money. They are just genuinely excited their colt survived a near fall and won a Classic TC race as they also promised a percentage of any purse to that little girl. Class act!

  • this is an amazing ride! alex my fav preakness.i loved alex..miracle ride!

  • amazing=]

  • "Afleet Alex jockey Rose almost ... FELL OUT OF THE SADDLE!"

One of my favorite announcing deliveries ever.

  • Most amazing performance I have ever witnessed. This, combined with the Belmont,m is a testament to the athletisism of this horse. The most underrated horse ever.

  • I think there are only a handful of horses that are better than Afleet Alex in the History of the sport. And the Belmont win showed everyone, all the doubters, what kind of VERY gifted horse Alex was. And just his life story is a total miracle. Push button speed. Crazy athleticism. BIG heart (maybe physically too). And some really sick finishing kick.

  • this ranks up with the dwight clark "the catch" play for the 49ers!! i'll never forget this race! =)

  • aww this is so cute especially cuz some of the money was donated to alexs lemonade stand cuz they named him after the litter girl alex who died of cancer...did anyone else no that?

  • everyone knows that

  • They didn't name him after her. It was coincidence that they had the same name.

  • yes they did her parents are co owners of the horse

  • They've commented on what a coincidence it was that they had the same name. The 5 owners that owned him chose to get him involved with her cause after they bought him.

  • He wasnt named after her. And her parents weren't co-owners either.

  • well thats what i heard so i thought it was tru just repeating what i heard end of story..even if its not tru o well

  • As the announcer at Preakness said at the finish....."Afleet Alex.....AWE-SOME!!"

  • Dave Rodman! BEST......CALL.......EVER! I'm going to watch it now. Brings a lump to my throat every time.

  • Yes Dave Rodman was EPIC in his call of this race.

"But here comes Afleet Alex and he's got room to rolllllllllll!"

"BOY, does he have some HEART!"

"How much the BEST is HE?!"

    "Afleet Alex........AWESOMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEE"

  • could not have said it better , could have added eat that scrappy bastad'.

  • "he's still gonna win! he's still gonna win!" brilliant

  • What a tremendous race, I loved the Belmont more though with Afleet, that final kick is amazing and so is Durkins Call

I wish Afleet Alex won the Triple Crown

  • This reminds me why I love this sport

  • What a great horse Afleet Alex was. That was a fuken horrible ride/ Lucky to have won!

    Skillz

  • Alex to win, Giacamo to show. Brilliant. Would've loved to see Alex against CURLIN, whoo boy...

  • Two great Arkansas Derby winners who both went on to win the Preakness. Ditto Smarty Jones.

  • "Afleet Alex jockey almost FELL OUTTA THE SADDLE." LOL

  • 1 word. HEART! he just flat out was determined to win. hes got my respect for sure.

  • I knew Alex would get this one,I felt he was unlucky on Derby day with the pace and all. This race and the Belmont proved to me what I always thought he was.

  • my parents are best friends with joe and coleen...the ones they show right after he wins

  • I got to meet Afleet Alex, and wow, just seeing a horse with all that heart is amazing!

  • Still nursing my Derby hangover from a rough go at Sam's Town ( The 10? ), I remember saying over and over, "No F n way...". Will we ever witness this type of grace and athleticism again in a thoroughbred? And see him/her run again? Not in this era, which seems to be bogged down in a quagmire of selfish corporate ignorance.

  • i watched this and the belmont sooooo many times lol =] alex is by FAR my fave racehorse. GO ALEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • when the horse almost fell the anouncer was into it I rewinded it like 20 times laughed everytime

  • Afleet Alex was so game it was incredible.

  • haha yeah my heart still beats harder and harder everytime i remember seeing him fall

  • Afleet alex was still a 2yr old in the derby by 4 or 5 days.

  • WOW I had no idea.......he shoulda won the TC that year. Jeremy Rose took the heat for the narrow derby loss. He didn't want to diminish such an incredibly gifted athlete like Afleet Alex. Good on Jeremy Rose (one of my favorite young jockeys).

  • I remember my friend telling me about how she saw Alex all during Derby and talked to all the connections and the trainer said she was alex's biggest fan

  • Come on Alex, come on . . . son of a BITCH. He's still going to win. Classic

  • Thanks for posting this. I've heard the Durkin call, but I've never seen the reviews of the stumble. I didn't catch this on TV, I wasn't able to watch it.

  • I was at the OTB and got their a bit late.the lines at the screens were long and I still needed to withdraw cash, this guy was standing there and he said he'd spot me whatever I wanted to bet, I said 100 dollars on AA to win. When he came around the last turn I said alright!!! HERE WE GO! Then the stumble and I mean it happened so quick I didn't really have a reaction but, when he and Jeremy righted themselves I went absolutely BONKERS!!!I was jumping and actually hugged the guy who helped me

  • Alex is an AMAZING horse. I love the reactions of the connections! "Come on Alex......... Son of a BITCH!" lol

  • "Come on Alex, come on . . . son of a BITCH!" lol, absolutely amazing horse, I remember watching this race on tv.

  • thank you for posting this because i was looking for the durkin call and couldn't find it.

  • Me too. I like it much better.

  • Eh, Durkins call here is good, but Dave Rodman did a much better job of calling Alex's trip and then coming back!

  • Yeah, his is good too. To each his own I guess. Dave Rodman is the guy that said "Afleet Alex boy does he have some heart! Look at him comeback a furlong to go!" right?

  • Yes, that's him! "Afleet Alex, Scrappy T. How much the best is he!!!" And then finishing with "Afleet Alex, AWESOME!!!" Rodman seems to add a touch of excitement that just goes along with a horse race.

That's said, Durkin is great too!

  • Yeah. They're both great calls. The only thing about Durkin is that the sound of his voice gets a little annoying to me, and I don't know how to explain it. But after a while, I would actually prefer someone like Rodman whose voice sounds a little cleaner. I don't know... I'm just weird that way. You know who I love? The guy that called the Derby all those years before Durkin. But I missed out on him, I didn't watch then. "And DOWN the stretch they come!" Talk about excitement...

  • I agree. Durkin was good, but the track announcer's call is much better in this case.

  • that was Dave Rodman right? MUCH BETTER call from Rodman. But, Durkin was very dramatic nonetheless.

  • Best performance by a jockey ever. Watch how Rose goes deep inside right after the gates open. And somehow, someway, he remained aboard the colt. Rose is also a humble guy - gave the horse all the due when he was equally responsible for the win. I love the reaction from the trainer/owners - son of a bitch - when the horse almost goes down but then rights himself to win in impressive fashion!

  • WOW!! absolutely amazing! true champion is afleet alex
