The most recent billboard type cabwise ads show a young woman in a car saying "stop please stop" and the caption reads "dont take an unbooked cab this christmas" shouldnt that be "unlicensed cab" ? Black cab trips are not booked in advance. Does the fact that the cab was not booked in advance increase the possibilty of being raped ? even if it is licensed ?
Fair enough, but some might say that the wording is deliberate in the sense that there is another agenda at work here, its about using the fear of rape to stop women hailing/getting into unbooked licensed minicabs as well as unlicensed when they cant get a black cab.
Except that these ads can be (and have been) shown to significantly reduce the incidence of rape by dodgy cab drivers against people that are vulnerable.
...and when you consider that a rape case costs about £150,000 of your tax money to investigate (irrespective of the result) you find that this particular campaign is actually a very efficient spend of tax payers money over the long term.
That was one cabby out of 25,000 that has been identified versus an identified (police records) problem of 100s of attacks per year from unlicensed/ dodgy minicabs that hang around outside clubs at night.
Cabwise is about giving everyone access to a choice of legal and licensed journeys home to reduce the potential risks of getting into an unknown car at night.
yeah but lets not forget that the taxi driver who drugged and raped all those women was fully licensed. All this is more about protecting the interests of black cabs.
@JaseKent as a taxi/minicab user im all for equality between licensed black cabs and licensed minicabs, they can happily coexist. Why not promote licensed minicabs to be able to to drive in bus lanes the same as black cabs ? That way the passenger will get home safely and more swiftly and not be discriminated against when they use a licensed minicab as the black cab they hailed doesnt want to go too far south of the river.
Maybe I will, now even the chairman of the greater london assembly needed an illegal cab to take him home ! But really its the generalisation you use "dodgy minicab drivers" ? but point out that the dodgy black cab driver was only a minority, I could say the same thing to you about the minicab drivers, lets not forget that the people who committed these assaults were POSING as minicab drivers. its not the same thing. Lets be even handed about it.

unbooked minicabs ARE unlicensed... the licence ONLY allows them to be booked. Only black cabs cab pick up without a booking...
JaseKent 2 years ago
@JaseKent so you are more at risk of being raped in an unbooked cab and only black cabs can pick up without a booking. o.k. i get it now.
