  • I was on some vid. I heard this song. It was beautiful then a rapper came on. I sobbed.

  • how come shawn phillips was not at woodstock

  • I bought this album when it first came out. The music is still such a beautiful sound. I remember having both my parents come into my bedroom to listen to it with me. I sat on the floor just watching them listen. Just beautiful.

  • its a good thing its all on youtube its not posssible to get his albums or cassette tapes anymore

  • okay ~ at 51 years old ...i am a newbie ~

  • I found Shawn's music while in Phoenix 1972. I have never been the same since. His voice, words and arrangement speak to my soul...Haven't been without his talents since.....In concert..he is simply put...Captivating! Just puts a bad day into perspective.

  • What a marvelous song - been listening to it for years but never tire of hearing it. First bought this disc in a record store in Twickenham, UK. An amazing musician.

  • OMG this is amazing......an absolute classic, a pure beauty!!!

  • it's amazing that I created a song similar using Dm F, C, G with different fingerpicking patterns.

But the essence is the same. Years after the song was made with no knowledge of past creation. It's amazing how the music of the universe is timeless.

  • I purchased this album in 1970. I loved it then... I love it now! Simply brilliant!!!!

  • Absolute Classic!!

  • CHECK OUT...

    Eli G

  • My dad has been a fan since first dating my mom on the 70s and they listened to this guy a lot. He dug out his old vinyl when Shawn came to St. Cloud for a concert and said that Shawn is still a great singer/player and has even kept up with the technology, using looping machines and a Mac on stage to create new sounds.

  • Abstract Reality!

  • Man, Johnny Cash used the same chord progression for his cover of Nine Inch Nails cover of Hurt.

  • @bongowongowongo johhnnys progression was a minor, c, d. This is a minor, c, g

  • i went to a concert at Northup Hall, back in the day. Powerful! Happy to find this!

  • cyne and Cunninlynguists ^^

  • @anonspacecowboy which one of cyne??

  • @Kibrule cyne-first person, sir!

  • I'm hooked to his voice!! so soothing, so calm...

  • Cunninlynguists ;)

  • not another artist like Shawn! ;) thanks husband for turning me onto him! ;)

  • One of the truly great balladeers..

  • good memories i ised to have this album....

  • Bonjour, je cherche désespérément "what's happening Jim" introuvable sur iTunes, YouTube etc... Quelqu'un aurait-il la gentillesse de le mettre sur YouTube ?!...

    Merci.

  • aveva capito parecchio, il tipo....! ^ì^

  • I have both "Second Contribution" and "Faces" LPs. I bought "Faces" whilst browsing in a record store back in the 70s. It was being played over the store audio system and I bought it on the strength of one track. I had never listened to him before, but have been hooked since. In fact back in those days, I purchased most of my records in that fashion....

  • This was one of my favorite albums during my high school years, lost it during a moving transaction and decided to look it up.. great memories such a classic.

Thanks youtube and thank you Shawn...

  • just awsome!!!

  • Thanks to my mom's old records I've discovered this :)

  • In 1974 I started college and a friend, with hair as long as Shaun's, was a big fan of his music. I fondly remember the evenings together drinking cold beer, smoking herb and listening to Shaun's Collaboration albums .... I still have 1st and 2nd on vinyl, of course. Thanks for sharing this beautiful song on YouTube .... it is amazing what one finds here :)

  • I've loved Shawn's music since his first album. Still amazing... and still listening to it. Shawn - you STILL rock!

  • This is nice!

  • A gift to be held in your pocket for life....I'm 57 and saw him sing live in HoustonTx live around 72.....part of my life thread.....love you Shawn............

  • @tokenannie awesome!! I would have loved to see him in concert... any time. I'm 54 and have continued to be a fan. Great comment -- it IS part of my life thread also. Sooo coool!!

  • 3:27 so beautiful! Please check out CunninLynguists - Remember Me. Great remix!

  • @HipHoff Check also Cyne - First Person :)

  • @AkagiFreaks Thanks a lot, can't stop listening to it!

    Cheers!

  • Stop your bickering boys, it's a great song. Enough said.

  • Great song. Enough said.

  • shawn phillip sucks! once a fine unique singer now a old man who sucks!

  • @atfatw As we are all entitled to our opinions you are entitled to yours. Just know that even in your prime you could not even hold a candle to the talent that he has in his little finger. And you too, unless your tongue strangles you, will grow older. Peace be with you.

  • @bc78260 you suck! you sanctimonious bum!

  • @atfatw Cool story bro.......

  • molto molto malinconica. meravigliosa

  • yo I am surprised to find that a lot of great hiphop tracks uses samples from artists like this..

    cunninlynguists, cyne, nujabes.. AWESOME!!

  • @krazycore STOP SNITCHING!

  • @WhatAboutDaBeatz they are actually good.. much respect to the original ones..like this one

but sometimes the beat version is much better..

  • @krazycore Im aware of the songs you speak of im just saying don't blow up the artists. Cmon man, you should know how this hip hop game goes.

  • @WhatAboutDaBeatz how does this hip hop game go?

  • @krazycore Producers get sued all the time for sampling things without permission and unless you know for a fact that they got permission for using a track... don't say shit about it. Im not trying to be a dick, just saying.. stop snitching!

  • @krazycore That's cool I didn't know those artists have sampled Shawn. But I am NOT surprised. For YEARS I've been saying that Shawn was the ORIGINAL RAPPER...lol! On other songs like Sleepwalker, Song for Mr C & Moonshine ( here on youtube), you can really hear it: he packs a lot of syllables, very rhythmically, in a short time. TRUE ARTIST in so many ways! :)

  • @lizzabbott NO, phillip defies classification. maybe, just maybe, he is similar to folk music but he is a true original totally individual.

  • @atfatw Oh I know..I agree that he defies classification. I wasn't classifying as that and that only .:)

  • Hey, i really love this song. The melody is sampled in a few hip-hop songs, and so i came to this one. The songs are "First Person" by CYNE and "Remember me" by CunninLynguists, they're worth checking out. Have fun!

  • @timmyzwerg STOP SNITCHING!

  • My friends were playing KISS and Alice Cooper and all I had was this album from my parents, I got the better deal !

  • beautiful

  • I grew up with this album. It warmed my soul at a time when most kids were just learning their ABC's. Ah, what days those were. Thanks, Shawn, for all that you've done for me in my life. A blessing in disguise if there ever was one.

  • @atfatw I don't know, but he has a great manager - lived in Bloonimgton last time I spoke w/him. Go to Shawns website & see if you can find how to contact his mgr - I'm sure it's still an option. He would be able to tell you. I was able to get his phone number & called him & he burned me a cd of one that was no longer available - couldn't find it anywhere. Good guy; he certainly didn't have to do that for me; I mean 1 copy? Good luck & let me know what you find out...

  • Wow...I just ran across this. I haven't heard this since the 70's when I bought the album and learned to play this song.

    Thank you for posting this.........beautiful

  • Shawn knew an English teacher at my High School in Richfield, Mn & he played for us there three times. I know every word to Second Contribution by heart; still. Since then, I have seen him several times at the Fine Line in MPLS, The Medina, & even a concert on a private estate in my (original) home town of Bemidji, Mn. He is my favorite entertainer, or as he prefers to call himself, composer. He doesn't edit the lyrics when he writes them; he just puts it down as it flows out - I believe him.

  • @TheKimberly1975

I lived in Bloomington around 1972 there was a rumor he rented a farm in burnsville any truth to this do you know?

  • Outstanding. Thanks for sharing zoodden. Definitely listed on my 'best music of my life' play list. Hope I can purchase this somewhere, it's been a long time.

  • props to the chicharones, cunninlynguists, and cyne for sampling this great song.

  • cavolo e' stupenda questa canzone..ma in Italia perche' non li pubblicizzano questi artisti? di che hanno paura? proviamo ad immaginare...non e' mica difficile...

  • in the 20 second interval from switching vids my computer all of a sudden decided the flash player was no longer good enough...bs

  • I'm proud to say I have been a fan of this excellent musician/singer since my girlfriend at the time (1973) turned me on to his music. I purchased the album "Colaboration" and I was hooked. This guy's vocal range is outstanding and his songs tend to have such a magical quality to them. Put your headphones on after grabing your favourite beverage and comfort food and allow yourself to get lost in the land of Shawn Phillips. Time well spent.

  • @glenalan1954 Hi! I was so thrilled to see your comments, for I love him too& also discovered him in HS. Have you heard any of his more recent music? Specifically the CD "Beyond here be Dragons"? There is a song on it titled "Moments" that you must hear, if you haven't. It epitomizes the meaning on happiness in my opinion. He is my favorite (see my comment above). Did you hear the story about how he lost his hair (temp.) in a boating accident in Italy years ago? Reply, if interested.

  • @TheKimberly1975 Yes, "Moments' is truly a masterpiece. I've seen Shawn in Atlanta 3 times, the 1st in a club near Lindburgh Plaza in Atlanta. I also saw Scarlet Rivera there too. I think back fondly of those counterculture late 60s - early 70s. The creative forces in music and literature were incredibly strong.

  • @glenalan1954 too bad you can't stay there

  • @glenalan1954 good to hear that story man, i was hooked ever since hearing this song! pure psychedelia

  • @glenalan1954 Did you and I have the same girlfriend? This is one great musician...

  • @glenalan1954 comfy food is coarse junky food

  • @glenalan1954 VERY VERY WELL SAID!!!!!!

  • @glenalan1954 comfort food is junky food! candy bars, hamburgers, pizza, SODA POP. even candy bars these coarse mood alterating 'foods' are just what a junky loves

  • a unique and a wonderful voice

  • underated

  • Haven's heard him for years and years. His records were not available in Russia in 70-es. Incredible feeling - to hear his voice again. Like to return to the childhood.

  • Named my oldest boy Casey Shawn, in a vain-glorious attempt to honor this man who has meant so much to me through his words and music.

  • @BearBull86 vainglorious - one word.

  • @universalradio One word misapplied.

  • this song gives me a little hope... I juste don't know why. Thank you Shawn Phillips!

  • allucinante! io amo quest'uomo e la sua musica

  • Does somebody know where to find another masterpiece, Storm ? Thanks to krysstyan we can hear a short part here (reprise by Marie Laforêt), but I failed to find the full song... Thanks.

  • @romu2222 ...Isn't That Marc Almond Band?

  • Anyone else than CYNE, Cunninlynguists, Chicharones and The Loyalists who sampled this?

    Thanks

  • He played this at my request for my brother years ago in Chicago, still makes me cry.

  • like it..

  • Unique

  • cyne - first person

  • nhyuiklo

  • Saw Shawn Phillips in Moncton NB, what a performance...Bravo!!

  • a great, great, song even almost 30 years later its still as good as the day it was recorded!

  • @atfatw LOL more like 40 i wish it were just 30 years ago! i'm a teenager again when i listen to Shawn..

  • I used to love this album. I can't remember if I had it or my friend had it! We used to listen to it all the time.

  • I heard this live the other night... and Shawn puts in so much emotion that I thought his guitar was going to break from the sheer feeling coming from the man.... I grew up with this song when my father would sing it and i learned it.... we still do

  • amazing,beautiful,speechless !!!!!

  • Man......I had forgotten about Shawn over the years. Thanks for the wakeup call. I had his albums back in the early 70's.

  • The end of this song has a beautiful example of just how wonderful a 4 octave voice can sound. MESMERIZES Me! SUEANNE! HELLOOOOO!!!! lol

  • I would go to sleep by this song in the seventies. It's hauntingly beautiful. I think it's his best song. There is so much crappy music out there today.

  • Timeless - I head this in the late 70s for the first time, when I was in the army. It still give me goose bombs - unlike the army, of course,

  • Just a quiet one for me...

  • magn ifique souvenirs xoxox

  • Check out a video of Shawn Phillips performing London Town during a private concert. Just click my user name and watch the main video on my channel.

  • I bought this alblum when it first came out in 1970 while I was a senior at Pius X high school in Lincoln, NE. This song/ballad of Casey Deiss continues to sear the inner recesses of my soul with loving truth. Thank you for posting...most excellent. To all others...listen, learn, and enjoy

  • I was a brand new teacher in a tough inner city school in Buffalo in 1970 and I once played this beautiful song on a record player for those kids. They settled down, read the lyric sheet I provided and we spent the rest of the class discussing the beauty of the words, the poetic images and the sad story within this masterpiece. It started off a whole unit on poets and songwriters.

  • We used to see him quit often in San Antonio. Put on a great show.

  • The Loyalists - Wash

  • THE CHICHARONES- Breaking Point is my favourite sample of this song :)

  • I nearly fell over when I heard this guy talk. He has the thickest Texas acfent I've ever heard.

  • hey guys check out The NexXx's cover of Shawn Phillips' "Woman".

  • i was listening to this when it came out ! the Album ! good stuff !

  • great song, especially because it spawned three more amazing songs- remember me- cunninlynguists, the wash-loyalists, and first person- cyne

  • I loved the album cover. I picked the record out of my brother's record collection because of it when I was about 14.I was enraptured. and he was like my special secret cos noone my age had ever heard of him. beautiful music oh yes!

  • I too have been listening to his music for 30+ yrs. Amazing music. Thanks for years of pleasure. Still have his "records" on vinyl and I amaze my friends with his music, for many have never heard of him. "Woman" moved one of my friends to tears, (the version on the orginal album). Thanks again :)

    TJ and family

  • Thanks Shawn for making the world a better place.

  • @ultrabizz

how has this old guy made the world a better place?

  • @atfatw y singing great music duh. i usually listen to heavy metal or punk rock but this dude is so good i cant help but enjoy his incredible talent. dude if u dont realise that why are u listening to this?

  • @atfatw "OLD GUY" excuse me but if you're lucky someday you'll get to be our age. I guarantee that if you do reach 50 you'll understand how it feels when you're raising a family, working hard, playing good citizen and maybe having served your country in the military to have people dismiss you as simply OLD. Mark my words, you should be valuing the things that came before you because someday you'll be in our shoes.

  • @ultrabizz Whats a matter with you ?? Why are you calling names??

  • @ultrabizz Couldn't have said it any better.........

  • this lp cover always cracked me up - from the front cover, you expect Joni Mitchell, flip it over and...it's Shawn. Great music, of course

  • @MKUltra3 ha, yep, same reaction

  • I love his heartfelt simple yet refined sound.

  • Well, it's kinda easy but very deep lyrically.

  • Where did he go?

  • @SidewayRocking still kickin.. lives in Africa with his wife... comes home to Austin here and there for some intimate gigs..

  • Love Shawn Phillips' music been listening to him since I was 3 so for 34 years now.

  • @MetaOracle haha i learned about it cuz it was sampled by Cyne - first person. both r great songs, if u like CunninLynguists u should like Cyne

  • @MetaOracle I got it from loyalists wash!

  • @MetaOracle i prefer the chicharones version better

  • @MetaOracle A lot of artists sampled from this number. The Loyalists - Wash, CunninLynguists as you brought out yourself, also a number called Tomorrow made by Thomax from another number with Murs. I think there is a couple more .. just can't remember them :)

  • @MetaOracle It was also sampled by Cyne - First Person

  • Shawn was and always will be my all time fav. artist.......I continue to see him in small towns like Wakefield Que. and I get the same chills that i got 30 years ago. love you shawn

  • hip hop artist cyne and cunninglynguists sampled this song.cyne did it better. but still just by itself this is a pretty dam soul touching song.i can see why this song can make anything sound like gold.

  • @elmaestro0130 both were great, the loyalists also sampled it in the wash which was also dope

  • We were singing it at the new years eve yesterday.

  • I'm giving you 6 stars ****** for this one.Thank you for having it & for sharing it with us.

  • your a good person.make your dad proud.

  • cyne sampled this so damn perfect!! =D

  • cunninlynguists done it sick aswell

  • Cunnin!

  • If you made it over here Sinnersrwinners I'll try to lead you to water, but I doubt you'll DRINK: 4:35

  • (-____-)

I agree...................BUT still!, Even though it is (arguably) the best part it might not be whats best for crafting a whole new song around.

  • But STILL: There was no crafting of a "whole new song"....The BOCD melody was copied wholesale and a rap laid over it - no musical creativity whosoever...

  • Is rap not music? Was there no creativity in the lyrics of the rap?

  • Comment removed

  • Look man, I'm tied of arguing with you. It's obvious were aren't getting anywhere with this.
