The baby died :'(

You can't blame you situation for what you do. When I come out of uni, I'll probably be unemployed for a while given the current climate, however that doesn't instantly mean I'm guna be a heroin addict or any kind of drug addict. You feel that some people use it as an excuse i.e. because I'm unemployed, I am a druggie, but don't you think thats wrong. It's about your judgement at the end of the day, and these people simply have poor judgement and can see no other way of coping. Sad really

@djalistar, What they have is "sharing" at best two bedroom flats or bedsits, which they maintain by sticking to programes or staying with friends by charity. The "Benefits" recieved are discressionary at at Govenrment leisure, which of cause means failure to attend (this can include being late by 5 minutes) a myriad of requests results in withdrawal. People may make choices, but when all hope is gone, what you see here is Reality.

True. It's a type of life that eats your self-respect. They have no independence, and as such have few real life goals (aside from eating, sleeping and getting high) and extremely limited means to achieve them. That they maintain their humanity and some sense of self worth and family is a blessing.
I hope they can do something more with their lives.

You'll find people like this in every city with poverty and unemployment.
I'm from Newport and it's just as bad if not worse except... Swansea is bigger so it's probably a bit worse but more spread out.
But I do drugs myself, just not crack and I'm not like this. You wouldn't really know unless I told you.

According to Wikipedia Swansea was at one time an industrial center. The urban center is 169,000 and the "greater urban center" is 270,000. Is Swansea an actual city or is it more an area or county? I couldn't discern from what I read. There has always been a heroin or "opiates" problem in Great Britain..hasn't there? They were doing the whole methadone thing and the clean needles thing years ago, long before the states. Always get a bit of a giggle out of their speech and expressions.

Swansea is infact a city and now a county, so that's why wikipedia wasn't making much sense. And your quite right, there's been drug abuse in the UK for centuries sadly.
