Clearly lots of people have never used a lightsphere. Its not that it creates a soft source. It simply takes the edge off of an electronic flash. Yes in a controlled situation I would set up strobes on stands and have total control over my lights. But on a rocking boat, I'm not sure that is practical.
In an even photography situation where you are walking around, nothing is better than the lightsphere.
it amazes me how many pros i hear abusing the word "softness". softness comes from a big light source. adding a lightsphere outdoors only makes your flash the size of the lightsphere, instead of the size of the flash head. so maybe 8 square inches instead of 3. outtdoors at this distance the difference is negligible.
these accessories serve a purpose indoors where the light bounces around. in this case he could have got more softness taping a bent sheet of paper over his flash.
What is wrong with people that they spend their time bashing something simple like this video? It's just some basic information that some might find helpful. What a world...
1:50 "the results are great" he said. Really??? They look like trash. Correct exposure not equals to good picture you dumb shits
And listen to him in the second half, "like that like that, right there beautiful, that looks killer, that is killer... love it love it love it beautiful..." who wouldn't want to punch him in the face?
You can invest money in the lightsphere but a dome diffuser included with the speed light does a great job for this situation. Now the lightsphere performs its best when you have the subject close to a background where you can see the shadows. Thats the only reason I'll use it. At $40 it is not bad but it is big and I will have to think if it is worth carrying.
I have to agree with rmstudio; anyone that really wants to be a professional photographer doesn't need this product because you can achieve the same 'look' without it!
You just have play around with your flash and experiment with the diffusers that come with most off camera flashes.
In saying that, for 'weekend'/ hobby/point and shoot - shooters who don't have the time or patience to practice with their gear this will do the job.
Gary is a brilliant business NOT a great photographer.
Becker is one of the pros with gary fong... you cant do half the things he does... both of them are like turkoglu and howard... DOMINATION.... before you call someone amatuer.... hint hint... look in the miror moron
Shoot TTL??? What an amateur... People dont do this... Shoot your flash manually if your dumb enough to shoot TTL your going to get "INCONSISTANT" exposures... The flash autosystem will be constantly fooled by variances in the image area ie: sky or the proportions of the model subject changes in the frame if you where to move around a bit.. Total amateur.. Listen how the guy directs the model. He doesnt have the experience you can tell.. I hate when amateurs are trying to teach others..
Man..are you serious? If you don't know who Gary Fong is, then I'm afraid you are the amature. I do agree that his tupperware type flash diffusers are a little silly...but come on...Gary is one of the greats in the industry. try a google search for Gary Fong and see what you come up with.
Delon been shooting full time for living "Not weekend warrior" for 18 years.. So please.... Who is Gary I say that sacastically because the guy was no body... I mean nobody.. He only self appointed himself as a great wedding photographer with no proof to back it up. All this rug wearing idiot is some guy like the guy from "Ronco" selling infommercial crap on the net.. Only a true amateur would make such a "NEIVE" statement of calling Gary one of the "GREATS?" in the industry. Is laughable.
Sorry Never needed too. Its not that hard.... My fstop stays constant because of using it with flash. Which sadly many that use TTL dont get or worse dont learn and understand about because they choose to never go manual and "Learn" about doing things off "Auto" settings. Thus never learning the princples of flash and fstops and shutter speeds and how they effect each other. Also its not that hard to change the "Shutter" speed to handle sunset. Worse is using TTL that in unreliable depending
on how you may say "Frame the image from shot to shot" The TTL is "Fooled" very easily. Just like your exposure meter. You guys I am trying to give you a piece of "Sound" advice here. For those of you bright enough think of this logic. I am not trying to "MAKE MONEY" off you or selling a product. Why do you think "RUG WIG" is telling you to use "TTL" He is targeting "NEW" naive "Consumer" that are new to photography to sell his gimmick. Not experienced shooters that know better. Just like you
do not see a race car driving a "Automatic" tranny race car. But yet auto manufactures sell us many "Auto" features. Camera makers started the whole "TTL" thing why to start selling us more flashes. More "Expensive" flashes the say are "Upgrade" models to be better auto flashes. But are basically the same "Auto" flash. These are targeted in getting "New" consumers for this gear. Nothing wrong being new to photography but dont like see "New" guys being stung by "Rug wearing" Snake Oil Salesman.
Crockettburnt that explanation was for you about using "TTL" for sunsets Like I said dont need ttl because with a "Little" bit of practice all of you can learn this skill. But if you dont make an effort you guys will be stuck being consumer suckers. I not trying to be mean to you guys. I dont like seeing "Rug Wearing" infomercial idiots ripping off naive new photographers. Then bragging about much money you made him on his blog. Be smarter guys.
Mr. RM... Gary actually tells you in the video why he shoots TTL here. It's because the light changes very fast during a sunset. I've tried it, I can't believe you, in all your wisdom and holiness has never tried that as well...
The sun with a reflector would not give you enough fill on the subject without blowing out the background.
With assistants/sand bags you could probably set up strobes.
Lightsphere is great for events.

Just use the sun.
